- Railz, on 05/29/2009, -0/+20That is amazing. This could actually take over forums completely in the form of groups - of course that is an exaggeration but this still does what any forum does with much more power. The amount of usability in Wave is unreal. Really depends on the amount of people using it.
It'd be cool if schools start using this for study groups and such. - Railz, on 05/29/2009, -0/+17The finishing points in the movie were amazing. Federation and the Translation Bot make this thing really really interesting. People being able to build their own UI/messages to wave means it could very well become used within smaller companies to broadcast news.
- waynehoggett, on 05/29/2009, -0/+16WATCH THE VIDEO. You can run this server internally without any Google servers...
- Aitese, on 05/29/2009, -0/+14Because THIS comment you've just written now only exists RIGHT here. With Wave on Digg you could see my reply in your email client and continue the conversation without coming here (not like you would want to all the time but you have that option)
I remember all the fuss while Digg was trying to perfect their commenting system...various sites could just plug Wave into their site and not have to worry about building their own system. Plus I could see various conversations and comments from one window without having to track various tabs for Lifehacker, Engadget, Reddit and Digg. It would provide a richer commenting system possibly allowing the embedding of media as well as text (within reason...no need to open it to spammers!)
Like they say in the video...flame wars will never be the same again! - rhinofinger, on 05/29/2009, -0/+13HOLY ***** THIS IS AWESOME
I can totally see this replacing email and instant messaging almost completely, though I guess email will probably hold out in formal business situations because of how deeply entrenched it is. And with extensions, looks like that'll certainly cut down on the amount of sites I'll actually visit. - Patman326, on 05/29/2009, -0/+13Google wave + 4chan = I'm not sure I want to know
- Aitese, on 05/29/2009, -2/+15Trust me, it's VERY cool...didn't think I'd watch it, but sat through it all
- f0ad, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11Maybe you should actually watch the video, the wave server can run anywhere, even within your own facility, just like your email server does now. Only waves destined for google users will live on google servers, just like how an email destined for a gmail account lives on a google server
- TechVik, on 05/29/2009, -2/+12Way cooler than anything else in development out there. Makes Palm Synergy look like something written by a 4 year old. All hail Google the Conqueror.
- mrBitch, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7@ srchid, if you believe that, then you just don't understand what it is.
Aitese got it, read Aitese's reply to trcook01's post (above). - DontWorryItsOK, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5Me too, I didn't plan to watch it all through, but it just pulled me in.
- tempysmurf, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5Gotta watch the Google I/O Keynote Day 2 it's worth it.
- f0ad, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6The hour long video is well worth watching, the discuss an awful lots of awesome stuff
- unco, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6it looks incredible
- raymccrae, on 05/29/2009, -0/+4RSS isn't going any where. Wave might just change who consumes the RSS feeds though. It might be the case that the wave robots consume it for the purposes of updating the waves.
- Aitese, on 05/29/2009, -3/+7OK point by point.
1. It's TOO complex.
I use Word everyday. It has a bag of options. I've just spotted "shared workspaces" but I have NO clue what it does...so guess what...I don't touch it. It doesn't stop me writing a letter, I just ignore it. Yes you can turn a regular email into a shared document...if you want. You could turn an email into a quick poll of your friends opinions...if you want. Or you could send a plain old regular email...if you want. Or don't do ANY of it. Why do people act like if an option is there they MUST use it and get frustrated they have to LEARN something new? You're not even learning anything new...it's just stuff you do on other sites anyway brought into one menu bar.
2. It's just Twitter or Facebook.
Right, because you use those as your main and only means of communication? They're evolving your email...something you all use daily. you could go DAYS without Tweeting. Not email though.
3. I hate real time typing.
Er, you can turn it off. When did we get so averse to turning things on and off? - inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+4Well I ended up watching 20 minutes longer than I expected to so aren't I a silly goose?
Looks cool. Can't wait. - coder_cotton, on 05/29/2009, -0/+4I hope they don't make a Digg gadget - the last thing I want to see is a live stream of /these/ comments...
- darthjure, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3Is this like Sharepoint? Everyone in my office hates Sharepoint - but everyone keeps using it because there is no better alternative. Hopefully Wave will be better.
- sodoh, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3Although if I never have to come to digg again how are they going to make revenue? I guess google will be pooping adverts into the program at some point?
While it is a client app it still needs to pull the data from the server.
Also I looked at the program, it looks very close in UI to Lotus Notes 8.5. - DavidTurnbull, on 05/29/2009, -1/+4Can't wait to see how this integrates with software like Wordpress. I'm guessing it'll be possible to eliminate RSS because individual blog posts could become their own Waves.
Kind of boggles the mind how much this could change the way we use the internet. - mgeza, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3I really would enjoy a professional online collaboration tool. No software, just browser. Sounds good.
- IKORKYI, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2doesn't google own 5% of AOL?
- Junpei, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2You read my mind PJ.
- dep0we, on 05/30/2009, -0/+2Freakin Amazing!!!
- the8thbit, on 05/30/2009, -0/+2You can run it locally on your own server, and its completely open source, so you can change how it works when you run it on your server too.
That's what the ACME Wave part of the video was about. 'ACME Wave' was competing against Google Wave just as Yahoo Mail competes against Gmail, and both were inter-compatible with each other, like email. - Aitese, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Well you'd have to come here for the story in the first place and to start the comment or reply to one...after that it would be up to you. Plus we expect they'll put ads in all their services don't we?
- dragon76, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3It's just you.
- Shiftgood, on 05/29/2009, -12/+14Is it just me? or are you hesitant to let google own every facet of your internet use.
- deadbaby, on 05/30/2009, -1/+3Probably good for people who like big, all in-one, type of solutions. I'm pretty happy keeping my IM, mail, blog, etc separate. Personal preference I suppose. It could be an interesting business tool perhaps however it would be more attractive if you could run it locally on your own server for that purpose.
- DaviDTC, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3Agree with Aitese. I plan on watching it all when I wake up. In 15 mins and very interesting so far.
- Silenthunter747, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2Maybe it's because a wave team member just said "shiny!" in the preview video, but is this a reference to Firefly waves?
- nightpool, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1ya, that's where they got the name from
- raymccrae, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Yes and No. If Wave has a nearest point of comparison then it's Google Docs. Though cleverly by making integrated in a email style app then people won't have the mental barrier to creating a document for common everyday tasks that they might with Google Docs. Even this description is massively over simplifies the rich functionality in Wave.
- danielwsmithee, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Sharepoint does suck and there are better options out there. That being said I see wave as a replacement for Exchange/Sharepoint/IM and Google Docs all in one.
- NoNameWorks, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1Did you really read his comment? He was countering the points listed, not supporting them.
- baramuro, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1right you are but we are commenting on everything
- Railz, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Arguing against your first point is hard because you're comparing how hard an apple might be so that makes an orange just as hard. So thats a personal issue, nothing google can help there.
On your second point - not even close. Twitter and facebook require you to be on their site - Any site can design their own wave system. Hey you could limit its functions to just polling if you want.
On your third point, it is better to have things turned on and off (like the Rosie bot) rather then just have them be on all the time when they're not wanted while some people would want them on constantly. - SirBruce, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1*waves* Hello!
- IKORKYI, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1too late.
- doktorjake, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0I couldn't help but think of how I wanted to use this for study groups in college before the presentation even ended =P
- bcultural, on 05/29/2009, -2/+2i like it
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1hmmm, i wish they'd hype it just a little bit so i didn't actually hear about it.
- chromerium, on 05/29/2009, -2/+2your comment was too long.
- doktorjake, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0claiming that google wave is too complex is akin to complaining that your car is too complex. I mean, it has carborators, pistons, and shoot, just the other day I opened up the hood of my car to find something that I had NO clue what it does. So guess what... I don't touch it.
Or, if you're stupid, you can just rely on the fact that it has a steering wheel, a brake and a gas pedal.
This is kind of like google wave. If you don't know what every feature they provide does, who cares if you use it or not? The point isn't to bombard you with all it's possibilities, it's to make its fundamental features easy to use while leaving the option open for more ambitious users to fully explore its contents.
If you don't care about those, all you have to worry about is the "wheel, pedal, and brake" so to say. - danielwsmithee, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1No not at all.
- Myztry, on 05/29/2009, -2/+2The era of the World Wide Wave dawns...
- NoNameWorks, on 05/30/2009, -0/+0I don't really understand why people are so resistant to this. It kinda sucks, I hope at least the people I work with and chat with will be less resistant (although I doubt it). My favourite feature in the new MSN is the picture sharing, this is like everything sharing. It looks so well exectued and useful I want to use it right now!
