- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1rambling?, it really bothers me when the city gets penny pinching on the public but when they raise their salaries is OK, if you don't live in a city like that, congratulations!!!!, sadly I do.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aww, i was expecting a vid or somethin.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm the type of person who gets their business done and leaves so I don't see a problem with this system (additionally, I stopped using the car for short range chores). If you're the type to stop and gab for awhile with some random person then I can see how you'd not like a system like this.
Personally I see towns, including my own small town, strapped for cash. For example, a family member who works for the city has occasionally mentioned funding dilemmas that they've had with the police department.
A system like this may not be popular but I can see the good that it could do. More cash for the city means potentially more cops or more fire trucks, more beautification projects or improvements/additions to local tourist sites. I say more power to it and let the citizens be responsible for their time.
Of course, greedy folks in government not giving themselves raises would help a bit too. - millmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$1.35.5 one dollar and thiry five cents and point five cents per litre in Stratford this morning, looks like the lawnmower gas can just became this weeks gas for work and back
and for our american friends a gallon is 3.8 litres so were getting ***** worse than u guys - Silverbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah. Add one more reason for people to stop going into town and instead shop at Suburban Sprawl-Marts where parking is free.
Since few people shop downtown anymore, I'm guessing this is just a way to get more revenue from urban workers who park on the street (cheaper) rather than pay for a parking lot space. - hazri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Instead of meter goes to zeros, why not reimburse the unused
money to the guy that actually paid it.
There should be a way to press a button and get change back rounded
to the nearest 10 cent. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever it takes to maximize cities revenues, I think is time for us to re think governments, technology certainly can get rid off the overheads, bureaucracy costs and over redundancy, no the other way around, re setting parking meters once a car pulls out is just a sign of how thirsty of money local governments are, their salaries are getting outrageous and every time less is done for those who pay taxes, less public programs, less community improvements, a more efficient government would help to minimize taxes and boost local economies.
- blindarrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and bonlebon, WHAT THE ***** are you rambling about, exactly?
- blindarrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you don't understand how a parking meter can't be like a table, you've never waited tables ...
To make the most money, you have to "turn and burn" ... which means get your people waited on as fast as possible & out the door, so you can get more people seated there. The theory is that being able to provide good service quickly = more customers = more money for you.
You can park at the parking meter, pop in your money, and go. Let's say you stay over the time that you paid for, and don't get ticketed. Well, you've occupied that space more than what you've paid for, and by staying over, you've cost the city revenue by not allowing someone else to come occupy that space & pay money.
Sitting at the meter past the amount you've paid for is like having idiots that come in, order coffee and dessert, and then sit there for 2 hours, yakking away ... it ties up that table and you can't make money with it.
Go be a waiter for a week and you'll experience this, and then you'll understand how a city feels. - lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"First of all, that doesn't explain how a meter is like a [restaurant] table."
You don't want people hogging a parking space on a commercial street all day long. It's unfair to the people who need to park their cars so they can do whatever it is they need to do, just like a restaurant can't have people occupying tables for hours while others are hungrily waiting to be seated. - tommymichael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i pay so much for gas, im not paying for parking!
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have one thing to say. use one of these suckers on them.
http://shrinkster.com/7up
It sucks bad enough trying to park with out getting $25 to $45 dollar parking tickets. - M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, pros and cons,
Well, being since I park downtown all the time, this is complete *****. They are just trying to milk as much money as they can out of the people, and if you don't see that, your just ignorant.
The government is NOT a business, they don't have to make money, they get it for free, in taxes.
SO if any of you think this is ok, your retarded.
How is it ok, for someone to charge you 10,000 times what it cost to originally park there? Please tell me how 50-75 cents can turn into a $50-$150 ticket, and why? And could anyone except the government get away with this?
It's to extort more money out of the public, it's a ***** crock.
So not only do you pay, income tax, sales tax, property tax, which is, tax on food, tax on gas, tax on the money you make, tax on the house you own, tax for taking a *****, I mean by the time your done, I'm willing to bet you spend at least 25% of your money solely on taxes.
FYI: The government could not show or recall what they did with over 1 trillion dollars, I don't remember what article, but if someone could back me up on this. The Pentagon gave credit cards to almost every employee and let them use those cards for pretty much anything, and you paid for it. One employee even purchased $10,000 breast enlargements for his girlfriend.
And not to mention this.....
http://www.warresisters.org/piechart.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0potentially more cops or more fire trucks
Sadly in some cities, like the one I live in, this rule doesn't apply, hey if we are talking about a city than spends the money on REASONABLE expenses I'm all for it, but most of the money on the city I live is used to pay trips for the mayor and a committee of 40+ people, plus their ANNUAL salary raise of up to 25%, does that makes sense?, short answer NO. - millmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live in a small city that is tourist based and i can see them pulling this ***** to milk the downtown core, but anytime after 5pm should be free, my town Stratford is currently figting a wal-mart trying to move in to town, claiming it will destroy the small buisness and keep ppl out of the core, but ***** like this will keep ppl away from downtown cause they either cant afford to shop there already or cant afford more money for parking
pure *****! - Kylinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0-"I just wish people would go with the flow," said Officer Tony Marino, whose three-wheeled cart is the center of the town's enforcement operation. "I mean, a parking meter is like a restaurant table: We have to turn these things over."
First of all, that doesn't explain how a meter is like a table. But perhaps the reason people don't 'go with the flow' is that they can see the most powerful motivation:
-That program and other efforts to collect on unpaid tickets have increased revenues by more than $300,000 in the past year, said Howard Chan, who runs the city's parking division.
Remember the days when we were all aghast at the idea that feeding a meter was illegal? - rkn5555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uhhhh.. You do know that the government is controlled by......
hmmmm..... the Public.....
So... uhhh...
ummmm....
Its you, the people that can do something about it.
Instead of ranting and raving about it here,
take your energies and direct them at the Official that YOU elect. - redpoint73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awww, man. I LOVE pulling up to a meter, and there is already enough time on it so I don't have to put money into it!

Sure they are,...that's why more then half the population voted AGAINST BUSH, but he still won...your right we do control them,...
O wait, NO we don't.
Can you smoke marijuana if you wanted? Can you have a same sex marriage? Can you...Can you......There are so many things I could rant about, but I'm not going to. - MegaSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about other areas, but most of our parking meters have been replaced with ticket booths every 5 or 6 cars. Now, instead of putting some quarters in the meter, you walk to the centralized machine, put in your money (or credit card) and buy a ticket to put in your window. This way, once you leave, the time on the space is done with. Same concept.
- theplug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think what upsets me most about this is that they've implemented a system to eliminate the "time donations" to the next person parking in the spot, yet they're still forcing people to "guess" how long they're going to be in a space to encourage overshooting the mark. The practical and logical way would be to (optionally) offering credit card charges based on time. This way, they've got your credit card on file, and you're charged when you leave.
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea watch soon enough there will be some sort of tape to put over a ir sensor in the space.. to keep it from zeroing at all
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry for spamming, but if you don't see this anywhere you have to this this here...I thought this was typical.
"UNBUDGETTED: $85B (est.):Most of the spending for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is not included in the President’s Budget but the Administration has announced it will seek this money as supplemental appropriations later in year as it has in the past two years" - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Look, I'm pretty conservative, but what I don't understand is why liberals AND conservatives aren't against parking meters and despotic nonsense like "e-checks." The fact of matter is that the majority of the people negatively affected by parking meters and e-checks (the government controlling if you can have your license plate renewed based on emissions testing) are the people who are in the lower tax brackets. The fact of the mattter is that I have a perfectly good ford escort that I can't even drive legally on the street until I get my front tires changed. THE GOVERNMENT is stopping me from doing something that is perfectly safe. Then, I have to go downtown and work for the government and pay a parking meter that will now expire faster and cause me to pay more money. I don't mind paying for government; I just don't think the government should be in the business of deciding who parks where and how much they should have to pay. Okay sorry for my idiotic pointless rant but I'm pissed about the e-check.
- brettotte1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OLD DIGG! ALREADY MADE FRONT PAGE WEEKS AGO!
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And if you see in that chart....
The US makes 2,130 Billion dollars or (2.13 Trillion) a year from income tax, and 1 Trillion goes to the Military!!!
Sound RIGHT?!?!?!?!? - kubedawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0anyone have a stick of gum??? i can buy a pack of juicy fruit for $.25.
- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0EXTORTION. Great, one more way for the government to get you when it can. If they'd call it a parking tax, it wouldn't be so popular. Yet that's what it is.
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So the public wants Eminent Domain?????
I want the government to be able to kick me out of my house?
O yeah, that make sense.
SO MANY things!!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0to the the government ass kissers, stop milking that cow so hard, go out there and be creative and competitive, just having a company that fixes the same sidewalk year after year with no apparent reason is destroying the economy in small steps, stop being selfish, while most people work 2 jobs to make a living all yo do is win a bid in illegal ways just to keep your status quo, thanks for being so ***** on the human being department.
- slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0They should spend money, to prevent Hurricane Katrina Dmg. to People's home. Not saying Government is bad or anything, just they don't know how to use OUR TAX MONEY! :( sad very sad...
