- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13people pay for music?
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Have you actually used Google Talk? I've found it to be an excellent VoIP client, easy setup, easy to use, great sound quality, no distinguishable lag, perfect integration with Gmail... what can I say, it's a great program. Give it a try.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11They should have called it GMoney. Sounds more gangsta.
- mcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6All it takes is one horrible paypal experience to see what's wrong with it. Paypalsucks.com is full of em, but I've had my own as well.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13i dont see whats wrong with paypal... it works just fine :/
if i am ever going to switch it has to be 10 times better.
plus will it work with ebay? many other services that i subscribe to use paypal. I use paypal for iTunes as well! I really dont understand what google is doing with Gbuy.. - Ponch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://www.betanews.com/article/PayPal_Blocks_Hurricane_Relief_Funds/1125880826
- logic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I propose we call it GMoney regardless of the official name. I know I will :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the way I see it is that if its still in beta that means they still are gonna make it better. Google Betas are NOT the same as software betas. They are fully functioning and useable. I don't see any disclaimer thats says "this product is beta, and does not represent final product" As for innovation? If it wasn't for google you would still be using your 2mb account on advertisment riddled hotmail, doing internet searchs through yahoo directories, and get directions through the almighty mapquest *shudders*. Google is web 2.0. I look forward to a google payment system, even if it says beta or even alpha. Don' like google beta, go to msn, yahoo, ask etc.
- Reebok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Haha, GBuy. Those Google people sure are creative......
- pondster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I thought it was google purchases. I just recieved my invite from google, im going to start listing items to sell this wekend. Ebay/Paypal can kiss my arse!
- Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I really don't want this to sound like a flame, because it's not. I use Gmail and I use Google every day. But the truth is, Google isn't the innovator they, wait. Google never really was an innovative company. They had the right service at the right time and continued to make logical, expected additions and changes.
I for one think recent developments that have come from Google have been completely half-assed. The one Google product I used that felt finished was Picasa, and that was bought.
Everyone has their horror stories. I had my Paypal account closed once, and it pissed me right off. However, I had my Paypal account stolen once as well, and it took Paypal and I all of 25 minutes from the moment it was stolen to rectify the situation entirely. I receive a very, very substantial amount of income through Paypal and they've always been good to me. If you are familiar with the SomethingAwful/Paypal fiasco, you'll know what happened and why. Paypal was doing what it felt it needed to in order to protect its customers. Any time an account has a large surge in income, especially donations, inquiry is warranted by way of diligence. I do think Paypal should think before they act a lot of the time though. The people making decisions are probably individuals who take the power and run with it without justification. But a company is the sum of ALL its workers, not the few that make the messes.
I actually wouldn't trust Google with my money. I have no well backed and researched reason for not trusting them with my financial well-being. I just wouldn't.
One last note though;
I sure as hell wouldn't look twice at any payment processing that had the term "beta" in the logo ... Aren't you all sick of being Google's Lab Monkeys? - gage006, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13I hope Google does it right and puts Paypal out of business.
- monototo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3from the end of the article:
"GMail, since its launch has been coming under fire from many groups including international privacy rights group. They allege, Google computers scan the keywords in the mail to deliver targeted ads."
They allege google deliver target ads? whatever gave them that idea... lol, lol/chicken - flaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3eBay and Paypal need some competition. If you've ever sold something on eBay you'll quickly realize just how much of a cut they take! It's insane. I welcome competition; monopolies suck!
- plusque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sergi: What are we going to do tonight Brain?
Larry: Same thing we do everynight Pinky.... - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -15/+18The G must stand for Gangsta
Just like it does with Gmail - TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Chances are I am not going to switch. But gBuy will be good for the whole online payment competition. Paypal fees have just gotten out of control. Hopefully paypal feels some pressure and lowers fees in the near future.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ditto. So long as Ebay is tightly linked with Paypal it will be hard to get rid of Paypal anyway. But there is more than just Ebay in the world, and Google Payments can fill that niche.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must say that this name is an incredible linguistic faux pas for Google and will almost certainly cause it to not be used much in countries like Singapore or Taiwan where the Hokkien dialect is in heavy use. "GBuy" sounds *exactly* like the Hokkien word for "vagina", and is often used in a highly offensive swear/insult phrase.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly...you think your life is so exciting that the government gives a *****? That is about as ridiculous as Jerry Seinfeld thinking he is "bomb-worthy". Yeah..the government has nothing better to do than to monitor YOU! Give me a break!
- enzomedici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3
Holy *****, don't market that in China or Taiwain...lol....geebai! Bad, bad name. - search, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still would have called it G-Money or GUNIT
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm often torn when I see stuff like this. Logically I know that if you look into ANY large company you will find horror stories. However, I don't want to dismiss people who have had bad experiences. It seems that if things go smoothly with paypal that it is slick, convenient, and a pleasure. So far, that has been my only experience with paypal and I've been a user since before it was even paypal (used to be x.com or something, I forget).
Like anything else I think a big part of why I have never had a problem is that I think strategically. I don't just go out and buy/sell like a drunken sailor and expect ebay/paypal to bail me out immediately if I get in trouble. I limit the size of any one transaction, I keep small amounts in my paypal account, I screen buyers and sellers, etc. A lot of times the people with the worst problems were either doing giant transactions or had left a lot of money in the paypal account or had dealt with shady characters. - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Google does make a paypal type of service I hope they will have lower rates than the outrageously high paypal fees as well as hopefully having some improvements over paypal. I think Google can easily beat paypal with a lower rate but that alone, unless quite significant, will not be enough to give paypal some good competition. One thing I hope to god Google does not do is release a PUBLIC BETA. That could be seriously disasterous.
- Fruvous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They'll have to have something, some competitive masterstroke, to shake people off of PayPal. Sure, there's all kinds of PayPal horror stories. But as the saying goes, anecdote is not the singular of research. :) Millions of people fling billions of dollars around on PayPal all the time and are quite happy with it. So what could Gpay possibly offer to people?
The only thing I can think of is to make life easier for those of us without credit cards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I listed one item on Google Base a couple weeks back. About 10 days later I received an invitation to try Google Payments. I have not seen them refer to it as GBuy yet in their correspondance with me. I signed up for an account. In order for me to accept payments, I needed to give them my bank account info and my social security number. I did so. Similar to other online payment providers, they made a small deposit into my bank account and had me verify the amount. Once that was complete, I was ready to receive payments. In my listing, it calls it 'Payments through Google'. I setup an example listing at http://base.google.com/base/a/1017678/5417931757982352899 to show you how it works. I tried to create a listing below a dollar, but they do not currently allow listings for less than $1. The item is not meant to be purchased... just an example so please don't go through the checkout process.
- w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Paypal is also the first to make it so easy and the integration with ebay seals the deal. First does not equal best.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does sound cool, but I thought eBay recently made PayPal the only acceptable service to use with on-line transactions. Am I wrong?
- JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll switch as long as Google offers a higher money market price percentage...
- Kamino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think any project like Paypal or GBuy is doomed to fail because America is just a paranoid country. (At least the government, NOFI)
The government put banks and financial services under so much pressure they mess up their customer relations. I've seen it several times now. My bank (ABN-Amro, Dutch) got a 80$ dollar fine because of "suspicious activity".

With a country that is running a silent regime I doubt GBuy will be any looser or better than Paypal. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at the moment... i'm putting anything i do on hold with google. i may even find a proxy to hit. not that i do anything that anyone be interested in .... i don't even do porn so... whatever. but with the feds trying to turn google into an NSA annex i'm going to quit using mail and everything until i get word that they are going to tell them no.
- cgwas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got one of those tester thingies telling me I could put items up for sale on Google Base. I fiddled around with it for about 20 minutes and was completely unable to find a "price" field or a "this is an auction" check box or something. I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. I was then unable to find my own thing using the search engine after saving it. So, yeah. =/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm in on the beta of their selling service. Too bad I have nothing to sell. I could stand to buy some furniture though.
- schurkenstadt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google isn't an innovator? What about being the first one to have an search engine that actually delivers useful results? Does anyone remember the bad old days when altavista.com was the best search engine? Oh man .... how did it suck :(
- bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand how our government can fine a bank for doing the exact same thing it was doing 5-10 years ago.
- azermuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What are these Outrageously High fees you are talking about ? The ones I have seen for paypal are quite reasonable.
- azermuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently you aren't becuase Paypal is already eaily integrated into websites. More importantly, there are millions of other people already using it which is the most important thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect
- deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone want to buy GBuy.biz? Looks like it's for sale. And some other company already owns Gbuy.us. Check it out.
http://www.gbuy.biz
http://www.gbuy.us
Only on the net. - xqb4dpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whats with this single-character + related word name formula doing? iPod, gMail, gBuy, iSuck, iSack, etc..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I think its the same people who use AOL.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha. GMoney. I like that too. I can just imagine their advertising campaign for it... :P
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think hes refering more to it being too simple.
I have Gtalk aswell, but it never replaced any of my other IM clients. I still use MSN a hell of alot more. The voice chat works great, but thats like...it, there nothing else in the program. And I have to read text most the time as none of my contacts have microphones them self. So they can hear me, but I still have to read thier text.
Its actualy very annoying to have to read line after line of small font black text like that. And even if they don't want tons and tons of smileys (which I can understand, as alot of IM clients have gone absolutly freaking NUTS with too many smileys), they should have the basic ones. (Like ":P :D XD :) :(" ) And then just not allow custom smileys so no one can add more crap. The blue text idea is just weird. - werddrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Horribly written article though. Missing words, commas everywhere... I think I'm gonna have nightmares about it...
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could only get through about half the original article because it was so poorly written.
Does anyone know where these people are located, or contact info for them ? I'd like to correct the articles language issues and send it to them so that future articles will be better written. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can send me corrected one at hdogan [AT] gmail [DOT] com
I'm the owner of the site (you can check from domain whois info). I'll be thankful to you if you really want correct my language issues. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My mother language is not English. Sorry for misspells :(
- razmig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow this is amazing, I was just talking about how much I hate paypal and how confusing it has become.
hopefully google will keep it sane. - purezero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pure speculation. I don't see how it's taking on PayPal when the service like this is just for Google products, nothing outside of that. You buy something through Base, or Earth, or any other Google product, and you pay through this service. Has nothing to do with competing with PayPal, and any rumors are just that, rumors.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, you are. eBay owns PayPal, so they strongly encourage its use. There's no requirements for how to pay for eBay auctions though.
- xqb4dpx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i'm loving it.
