I think you missed your exit to the grammar highway. - skribble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@eklass
Amen brother... you vote with your dollars, I'll save mine until the votes are counted since it seems like an expensive election to loose in. - chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19So its double sided or both on a single side?
- MyBigRed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Interesting idea. My only question is what is the capacity of the Total HD disc? Is it similar to that of HD DVD and just be able to play on a Blue-ray player? Though to me a dual format player would make more sense since then you could play and DVD, regardless of the format.
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16problem with dual-format is that the studio/manufacturer is going to have to pay two-licensing/royalty fees. DVD/HD-DVD 6C patent pool consortium already charges around ~%5 of the retail price of the player be paid to them and they get a cut of every HD-DVD sold. Blu-ray has similar fees. I'm sure if dual-format disks ultimately win, and consumers are willing to pay more for their content, I doubt both sides HD-DVD/Blu-ray likely won't have a problem as long as they can collect royalties.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Basically this means people should stay away from any HD format for a while and stick to good old dvd's because it looks like we have now even more than just a simple 1 vs 1 grudge match on our hands...
- daub815, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Here's an idea: Just decide on a format for the ENTIRE industry.
- majordannyboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@DamageInc
close, except that LG was planning on making a dual player, this is a dual disc. The question becomes what happens when you insert a Total HD disc into a LG Player that is dual? will you have an option to play either Blu-Ray or HD DVD? - tardmongerster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You are correct. But now you look like a little whiny pussy.
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22@profOblivion
You might want to check your math...

That story: submitted 10 hours 48 minutes ago
That would make his story.... say it with me... 3 minutes older and thus posted first. This, kids, is the reason we stay awake during math class. Before you ask, yes I reloaded both pages simultaneously to check their times. - EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think he means idiots as in people who would buy a blu-ray disc then wonder why its not playing on there HD player
- Electrox3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11diggguru's title was stupid
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10LOL - at myself.
I am a moron.
Apologies, diggguru. I'd digg myself down if I could.
*shies away in embarrassment* - Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7To have to pay more ?
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The way I understand it is Blu-ray on one side HD-DVD on the other
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/04/warner-to-unveil-total-hd-hybrid-blu-ray-hd-dvd-discs-at-ces/
It makes more sense IMHO if its HD-DVD OR Blu-Ray on one side and DVD on the other - ReXorcist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5seriously dude, just drop it. this ***** happens on digg all the time, no one cares and whining won't get you more diggs either.
- MagiTekSoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ummm... in this case it actually is bad.
- StevoCJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What happened to this then?
http://crunchgear.com/2006/09/26/hd-dvdblu-ray-hybrid-discs-solves-next-gen-media-crisis/
True hybrid discs with both formats on one side of the disc. - blaize2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So how come all the big hollywood execs before this couldnt come up with this plan, a dual format dvd player would make sense agreed' but' cost of that to consumers would be outrageous...having to buy 2 dvd players also outrageous, this whole scenario will just widdle away at the consumers in the long run anyways, eventually both formats will be genuinely cracked and on comes the piracy issues for both lol, forcing ppl to decide between the formats is just dumbass logic, I'm not gonna buy 2 dvd players just because i want to watch a movie thats onlly avail on blu-ray and i have HD-DVD, either agree on dual format disc or bring on the piracy.
- zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This doesn't settle the war. Settling the war would be reducing the market to one single format. This just makes it so we can live with two, instead of actually addressing the problem. -_-
- luckytopher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7now it's not the decision of "blue ray or HD-DVD"
it's the decision of "wait for a player that plays both formats, or wait for a media that works on either drive"
either way... don't buy... yet.... - rementis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It would be far better to just have one win out over the other. Who even cares which it is? I'd like to collect movies in HD, but there's no way I'm going to pick a format until a winner has been decided.
- Colbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i personally think that the LG dual drive option is better. What's the point of having a movie in two different formats if you could buy ANY movie from any supplier and watch it in that format.
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is a bad idea. I'm rooting for HDDVD mostly because it is cheaper with the same quality and slightly less drm. These discs will be more expensive than either format, so I'd rather just settle for Blu-Ray than get these discs.
This is so frustrating- we have two formats that use the same size disc and the same blu laser diode, but are incompatible. They were SO close to just releasing one format! People were screwed big time on BetaMax. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
And the manufacturers are wondering why neither format is doing as well as expected! What a bunch of fools! - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As I replied to your post above (before I saw this one), I apologize. I screwed up. No excuses.
- MyBigRed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Though a bit more on the expensive side, I see this as similar to DVD-R vs DVD+R. Initially the combo DVD+-R recorders were more expensive, but that was overcome and now they are all combo. My point is sure it will be more expensive at first, but in the long run I think it is a better solution to have a DVD player that does both rather than having to buy a third (fourth?) format that will play on either drive. But that is just my opinion.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Cost difference is very significant from the manufacturing side.
- laseractive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Great, I get to pay more to get a format I don't want on the flip side. Thanks Warner.
Just stick with two separate releases until the format war works itself out. - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks LG and Warner Brothers for prolonging this format war. We really need a long drawn out war. Also thanks for the extra confusion ...as HDTV technology isn't confusing enough for the average users.
- jsdratm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm an engineer, and I am a member of the IEEE, noob
- JohnnyRad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This won't make it easier, its just a way to charge more for movies. If they really wanted to make it easy, they'd release it on 2 formats. One disc with both will cost a lot more to manufacture thus we'll end up paying at least $40 per movie. Where as on their own (hd and blu ray versions) would cost around 20 bucks a disc. Think about it they're creating a 3rd format disc...lame.
- joevill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sounds like these TOTAL HD Discs will be expensive, although I do applaud them for trying. Lets see what happens this year. I'm going to sit and watch
- Fracture98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wonderful. They've figured out a way to make sure it's only the consumer that loses.
Now we get to pay licensing fees on formats we're not even using.
Who thought up this little gem, the *****' RIAA? - Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Right it's all Sony....
except that as for exclusives, the Blu-Ray has the following exclusive movie companies behind it:
Disney
Fox
Lionsgate
MGM (is partially owned by Sony)
Sony Pictures
HD-DVD has the following exclusives:
Universal Studios
The two share Paramount and WB, along with some smaller companies. - KanosWRX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now that we have both the XBOX 360 HD-DVD player and a PS3 with Blu-Ray I find it hard to watch regular DVD's anymore, it's just such a huge gap in video quality (If you have atleast a HDTV for viewing it on, which we have a 720p projector!!). I find myself not even wanting to watch DVD's sometimes because the quality is so low. It's going to suck upgrading all those disks to HD/Blu-Ray DVD. But it will be worth it. I too think a combo player will be the wave of the future for this format war though.
- FinalDragoon06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21) I believe it was "Laserdisc"
2) It was talking about "Television Programs" - you know, TV shows?
I give you credit for using disc and not disk, however. - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Somebody usually makes the standards. So in terms of the VHS vs betamax it was JVC. Why don't you get upset with them. Sony is a face but nine companies signed on to make blu ray. The dvd forum was also signed on by multiple companies including sony. Sony also had thier hand in cd's as well. This bashing of sony has no real base because they have brought more good than they have done harm.
- jsdratm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9We should put the IEEE in charge of these standards since they do so such a good job of standardizing wireless protocols.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5THIS SOLVES NOTHING. Let's just do away with one of the formats and end the market stagnation and consumer confusion. I nominate blu-ray to just give up.
- diggguru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3CNET owns www.com.com
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i wish they would do that for all game consoles and let the people decide which to play on themselves. (i mean games not movies)
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You haven't seen any BD movies recently huh? There have been titles out already that have used VC-1 and with the 50gb BD the mpeg2 compression works like a charm.
- ukm1728, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it works by having bluray on one side and hd-dvd on the other, then logically when using a dual-format player the format used will depend on which way you insert the disc.
- UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Making a disk with both formats will make it easier for idiots, and harder for the rest of us on our wallets.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It solves nothing but why should Blu ray give up? Bigger space, bigger companies and more movie studios are supporting blu ray.
- aeproberts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree, people should stay away from both HD formats, but for different reasons. In a few years downloading, solid state memory, or some similar format will make both formats obsolete. The new HD version of a DVD will not enjoy the same long life as the original DVD. It will soon get trumped by a different style of format that is smaller, cheaper and provides the same or better storage.
- DamageInc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It looks like you got the submission first, but your title and description were just copied and pasted from the website. I actually took the time to read the article and write a proper title and summary (maybe thats why mine got dugg and yours didn't...)
- pixelpimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The future of DVD is downloading it from the web!!! By they time they settle on a standard apple, google, youtube will be streaming/downloading films straight to peoples computers.
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These things are going to be outrageously priced. Just look at the DVD/HDDVD combo discs out there, they are selling for $10 to $15 more than the regular HDDVD discs. And I'm pretty sure DVD licensing is cheaper than BD licensing.
- TangentThought, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"i would bet that Sony would follow it's trend of failing to implement it's own format."
But it isn't just Sony's format. Have you read which companies have taken part of the designing of Blu-Ray? Eight other companies joined in on its design. -
