- PotatoSalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"One theory is that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through November) and made their profit during the holiday season. When this would be recorded in the financial records, common accounting practices use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink would to show positive amounts. Black Friday is the beginning of the period where they would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year's profits (the black)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_%28shopping%29 - PureForm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13What a bunch of hypocrites. Every day [most of] you people slam on Walmart for being unethical and "bad", and now that you'll get even cheaper ***** from them you love them. Black Friday still doesn't change their ethical stance does it? Can't understand me? Oh, I'm sorry, let me put it in your language .... bahhh baaah bah bah baaah bahhhh bahhh .... stupid sheep.
- vexter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Post when and where so I can film your trip to jail and post it on youtube so we can digg your dumb ass to the front page!
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I've heard some sites will be offering their sales online as well, the origin of the holiday isn't really clear, but it's the friday after Thanksgiving, awesome sales every year at Best Buy in particular...
and yet, I still see nothing good at Wal-Mart, sigh.
P.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_friday - gabeyb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I normally stay put on Black Friday out of respect for my sanity.
BUT an "Easy-Bake Oven" for 10 bucks? I'm there. - Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does it count if I Photoshop them?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm a Brit. What's Black Friday? Just a cheap sale day or anything more specific?
Is it stuff they'll ship abroad or just for you guys in the US? - RadicalEdward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How come so many stores have the iPod on their black friday sale lists for nearly full price?
iPod 30GB new: $249
iPod 30GB Sale: $248.44
Total savings: $0.56 - kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@mGee
Who the hell said it's a holiday?
Not the guy you responded to anyway. That's why I dugg you down. - bitslayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Amazing Pets Love 'n Licks Puppy With Bonus Color Changing Bone
Now that's just sick. - ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Walmart of course (takes that profit hit that is). Walmart has already payed Sony by the time the PSPs are on the shelves. It's up to Walmart to make the money back. That's the whole point behind "Black Friday". The stores lower the prices to get lots of customers cause traffic is low that time of year.
Read the wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping) - harriman714, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5psp for $169!?
do you think walmart is taking the profit hit or is sony? - noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wal-Mart will price match any ad or receipt from another store 365 days a year. But it has to be the EXACT same product.
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BTW, Wall*Mart will also PRICE MATCH! anything another store is selling on black friday!!! last year i was able to buy a few brand new games half off without having to journey to Best buy. just ask for the manager if they give you any trouble and bring the add with you of course.
- Electric_Sheep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Black Friday" is the name given to the last Friday before Christmas in the United Kingdom. It is a day when widespread anti-social behaviour due to public alcohol consumption is expected to occur, and police are given additional powers to combat it.
I dunno about you, but our Black Friday seems to more fun than yours. :)
Everyone goes out and gets drunk. - noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While generally I don't mind shopping, I agree with you on this day; it's just not worth fighting the crowds most of the time. Besides all that, I get the feeling most of my shopping this year will be done on Amazon & other online retailers.
- AbsoluteMSTR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes Darth Vader Voice Changer $10
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Because Apple controls prices of their products. You will never find a "deal" on any Apple product. Ever... unless officially sanctioned by Apple.
- dizm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think someone copying South Park making fun of "sheeple" is pretty ironic.
- lico05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beyonce 2-Pack CD with DVD --- $9!!!!
I just peed my pants - FreydNot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Many of the super deals are being sold at a loss. Thus, if you don't buy anything else, you are "sticking it to the man".
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Black Friday is the Friday right after Thanksgiving (US Holiday, November 23rd). Lots of stores have ridiculously good deals/sales on many items, but only for that day only... hence, if you plan to go shopping on Black Friday you usually have to go in the wee hours of the morning and wait in line for a few hours. Worth it, though, if you can score the right deals.
- Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm marking this inaccurate because I did a search on walmart.com for 7 of these products, and all but the PSP had this "black friday sale price" available RIGHT NOW. I'm pretty sure these ads are just taken out of the latest Sunday paper. not digg worthy.
- j10s, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6psp for 169!!!!!!! .....eh who cares
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean "Nooooooooooo!!!!"
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, because families get together for thanksgiving and then go shopping for Christmas presents the next day. It's so named because it's the day retailer's finances go from red (-profit) to black
- ogre2112, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We're not blind. You're just a raving lunatic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Exactly...portable gaming makes no sense unless you take a subway or bus every day in a busy city.
- jthomp3120, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3will do ;)
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing about black Friday is that a lot of more expensive stores have better deals than the cheaper stores, this is because some retailers have started to use black Friday as a sort of lure. They have some ridiculously low prices that a few hardcore people take advantage of, they advertise black Friday so that they can get more people in the store to buy the expensive items.
- dmorel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ajck:
The term black refers to a business "going into the black" AKA making a profit, for the year.
Before we used all these newfangled computers, businesses would use pen in their ledgers, a red pen was used for loss, a black for profit...
This day is the "biggest shopping day of the year" in the US, hence it's nicknamed black friday.
IMHO it's a very bad day to leave your house. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm going to get me a PSP, sweet!
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably WalMart - but they're probably making it up on games sold, like Sony does with the PS3. In any case, that Plasma for under a grand is looking like a pretty sweet deal - if I still lived in the US.

- addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mGee or stolen on ebay.
- antique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's the day after Thanksgiving in the US. Everywhere has sales for everything and it generally only applies for in-store things.
EDIT: too late. - isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't slam walmart all year and last year I got my mp3 player for $100 off and several dvd's $10 cheaper than normal. Does it make people sheep if they can buy items cheaper so they do? More like a sensible shopper to me. A "sheep" as you define would be more like someone just buying something because its new and cool, not someone looking for a good deal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this sucks
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1i wouldn't touch that Polaroid 42" HDTV. most of the reviews I have seen show that it will fail after about 4-5 months. not worth the price, imo. a TV that is a little over half a grand should last at least half a decade.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad it's still overpriced at $169.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"My Little Pony Crystal Rainbow Castle With Bonus Musical Wand and 3 Ponies - $49.93"
Holy crap! I've always wanted a musical wand and 3 p0nies in my castle.
"Lil' Luvables Fluffy Factory With Bonus Ballerina Outfit"
That sounds fun too! - isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mGee
stop saying sheeple. - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Black Friday is the holiday after Thanksgiving in which black people switch roles with th white man. The white house is taken over by a black man, white people can only eat fried chicken and watermelons, etc..
- rolfeman02, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I vote that is is called black friday because it is hell to go shopping on that day
- WayneGoode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ajck,
Now that we have explained the American 'Day after Thanksgiving' holiday, you can return the favor and explain Boxing Day. I've never really understood it. - NoNom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A couple of years ago Target took $50 off one of the iPods.
- Amigaice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1any one have a cache of this?
- mandalyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0black friday is the day of the year where the businesses/companies get out of debt. in debt is called in the red, and since everyone goes out for christmas shopping right after thanksgiving, this is black cause the companies get out of the red and into the positive numbers.
