- ilovemusic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35It's too bad that they still don't sell uncensored music.
- kazzyD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Now if they could just get their site to work with Firefox properly:
http://www.techconsumer.com/2007/08/21/wal-mart-now-offers-drm-free-downloads-but-still-has-issues-with-firefox/ - Smeed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16There are kinks, but its a step in the right direction. Save your bitching for once and acknowledge that you've won something here.
- cam18, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Seriously...major labels selling DRM-free music was just a dream a few years ago...
- diggapleaze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Dear Linux and Mac users:
http://musicdownloads.walmart.com/catalog/servlet/MainServlet
Your welcome. - Mysk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10one step at a time.
- jrinco11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10is there an easy way to just show the mp3's and not the drm-wmas too?
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Too bad it only works for IE on WinXP
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Too bad there's no way to purchase these with a Mac... IE6+ & Win2K+ required, despite the fact that the actual song files will play fine on other setups... Add the censorship, and we've got a problem... Here's hoping for some real competition...
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Garth Brooks is expecting a new all time high in music sales.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Be careful with this music, it may cause chemical burns to your ears.
- mr_bako2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7If you ask me, google should release their own media player, complete with a music store of DRM free music, for a decent price per track...
Also, included in their media player it should include the option to stream/download videos from youtube and google video. Right now, there really is a standard desktop application for just about everything, but it's about time we had a standard for video streaming that can pull from multiple flash video sites and download as well. Google would be the perfect canidate... Hopefully they could get dailymotion to agree to be a part of it as well... I'd download that. - EricTheGrey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ok... I checked it out, and the first thing that showed up under MP3 albums was Dark Side of the Moon, which I once had, but have long since lost the CD, and never did rip to MP3 format.
So I experimented with it. When you download the music, they send you an executable file, which is their "downloader." Open this up and it will download the files you've purchased. The downloader will dump them into your "My Music" folder by default. Either you specify another directory, or move them once it's finished. Why it cannot create Artist/Album folders by default, I don't know.
Anyway, the MP3's are 256kb, which is what I rip to. Good enough for me, so I'm happy with that.
However, it seems as though they don't have a very big selection available (yet?), at least what I would be interested in.
Like others have said, it's a good step.
EtG - WraithTDK, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12Hmmmm...Wal Mart Vs. The RIAA
It's like Stalin Vs. Hitler! - ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4why don't they make an MP3 category so we can find what we want?
- oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5too bad it's still lossy.
- Phantom1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Going in the front door gets you get warned off, but going to http://musicdownloads.walmart.com/ seems to work. I went as far as creating an account (didn't go further because the MP3's are few and far between).
- johnnyrotten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I couldn't find one. It would be nice if they added a filter or a way to search for MP3 files only.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3lols if you boss said that about your hourly wage
- ztpruit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What do you expect? Wal-Mart does the majority of there development in ASP.net. Internally they are still using IE6 and any request I've put in to use Firefox, even as a development tool, is immediately shot down. Hell they still run the majority of there processes on IBM z/Series Mainframes.
- erinspice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Is it THAT hard to produce a solid, useful web app that works in all browsers and on all platforms? Google can do it. I guess this is just another example of Walmart-quality products. Mozilla's User Agent Switcher doesn't even work! Walmart requires Windows Media Player!!
- Coltb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2lmfao
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I wish their search engine had a setting to only show DRM-free MP3s and not show any WMA garbage. It'd be easier to find stuff to buy to reward companies that sell it that way.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Try few months ago. If someone would have said that major labels will be selling drm free mp3 tracks just 4 or 5 months ago i would laughed him off and kicked him in the ass for being so retarded.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1welcome to 90% of the computer userbase.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1come on dude. .94 cent is more then reasonable and this coming from a guy who lives in a third world country.
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3This doesn't work?
http://musicdownloads.walmart.com/catalog/servlet/MainServlet - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1there is drm mp3 but in name only. they use the mp3 extension but the whole file has a different structure then a normal MP3. Motorola clubbed a few "DRM" mp3 on the motorckr that you have to activate using web access via wap.
- ztpruit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The selection should be limited to artists on Universal and possibly EMI.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Mechhitler would have pwned both of them.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why is it a Windows executable? I would be a bit wary. Are they doing some form of watermarking?
- MoebiusStrip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, MP3 has no DRM restrictions, hence it's continued popularity. The title of this article is wrong.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I still think they are going to try and half ass it for another few years.
- EricTheGrey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You end up downloading a "downloader" program, which is a windows executable. Once you open that, it will download the files.
I'm giving it a try as I type, mainly to see what kind of quality the music is (bitrate, etc). Hopefully, it's good enough quality to replace my missing Dark Side of the Moon CD. I lost it years ago, and never did get it replaced.
EtG - Konformitee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Their Top 100 Downloads list is basically a list of top songs 12 year old girls listen to.
- execute85, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Greetings tard. On my macbookpro and firefox I can buy tracks and albums (http://musicdownloads.walmart.com/catalog/servlet/MainServlet).
The main link from their site doesn't work, but you don't need to use that link.
BAL - ztpruit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I work for Wal-Mart as a C and Perl programmer at the Home Office. I will take .Net over Java any day of the week but I would prefer a more open standards approach. Walmart.com may be a J2EE shop but I don't know because Brisbane, CA is pretty far from Bentonville, AR and the two shops are completely separate operations.
- zhulien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1do mp3s support DRM?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Power corrupts. Absolute power makes you insane.
- hardran3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Dude, when you buy a Mac you aren't allowed in Walmart anymore. Walmart shoppers can't buy Macs, Mac users can't shop at Walmart. Don't you read FSJ?
- Coltb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I still hate wal-mart
- undetected, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1"Google can do it." They better be able to. They keep hiring some of the best developers around. Walmart wages for developers, from what I hear, are a joke.
- gorndog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Windows executable? Welcome to the 90s, Wal-Mart!
- Zer01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1So....do we like Wal-Mart now? I'm so confused! :-
- diggjiushiwa, on 01/06/2009, -0/+0Nice news! DRM M4P converter not only is protected M4P to MP3 Converter and M4P to WMA converter, but also a common audio converter, because The m4p converter can easily convert DRM M4P to MP3, M4P to WMA, M4P to AAC, WMA and other audio format files.
http://www.drmremoval.biz/ - dotnetguru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Whats wrong in developing ASP.NET. is it inferior to java? how do you know that Wal-Mart uses ASP.NET? If you can see, the web site is built using j2ee.
- sg7791, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1If you're using this service, you're not smart enough to understand what DRM-free means.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2lol, you said "programmer" and "mac" in the same sentence, as if
- MCarela, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1People that shop at Wal-Mart don't even know what DRM-free is...
All they will do is look for the cheapest price. - shaka776, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5What about all the poor Mexican IT workers being paid subpar wages to build this site?!?
DOES IT NEVER END WALMART! You evil corporate entity!
