- JesusFaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7awww Synergy isn't up there
gotta love that project! - foxter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I voted best over all 7-Zip. What can I say? I love this app.
- trc0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My vote goes to XBMC.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Same here Xbox Media Center is the greatest multimedia app I've ever seen. Combining great apps like mplayer, samba, filezilla server, I'm pretty sure the web interface run off of apache, along with others. With support for DVDs, VCDs, and any codec you can imagine; this app turns your Xbox into the greatest media appliance a person can own.
- jb347, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd have to vote for either Notepad++ or Filezilla.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think MythTV or KnoppMyth should be in there...
- sirmalloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How can they not include TrueCrypt (http://sourceforge.net/projects/truecrypt/) in the security category? It's such a beautiful piece of software.
- ivachen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4argg, Azureus or gaim.. it's hard to decide.
- Patzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was sad to see that Audacity wasn't in the multimedia area. Without Audacity what would podcasters do?
- fgiDangeresque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Check it out, and give some great developers some kudos at the same time. And remember: there is more to sourceforge than azureus!
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3TightVNC = myvote - It continues to be a key technology. I depend on it everyday @ the shop...
- gleapsite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I LOVE notepad++
And it brings me great joy that others do too. - Ginjeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have to agree 7z is the best archiver.
- bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Media Player Classic/guliverkli
F'real. - kson34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How the heck did they come up with entries for the categories. CvsGUI in games? UltraVNC in Networking (makes sense), but then TightVNC in Security? Also, where is TortoiseCVS, one of the greatest development aids out there.
- murrolems, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree, synergy is pretty awesome
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"How can they not include TrueCrypt (http://sourceforge.net/projects/truecrypt/) in the security category?"
Steve was just talking about TrueCrypt on SecurityNOW! last week, too... - fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3true, like filezilla, gaim, or tightVNC
all amazing programs - ashtonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Synergy is under the "Desktop" category
- mrops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what the F@#&
no ethereal under network !!!!!
For those who don't know ethereal, its one of the best sniffer/protocol analyzer out there. - reeprflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check out the GibPhone project under VoIP. Granted it is not as awesome as Asterisk but it may be better than some of the management portals listed in that section. It is a very flexible platform allowing plugins to be made for any type of internet communication (VoIP, Video, Instant Messaging, POTS interaction, etc). It is rapidly being developed and is the only project known of thus far to implement a .NET version of the powerful Speex protocol. Also, any developers that may like to work on this project, please contact us (kc2lto@gmail.com / gibphone@gmail.com )
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are well over 100,000 open source projects on SourceForge.net. Some of them even have files in them!
I develop and support OSS and I love SourceForge. It's the first and primary site that I go to for apps but it is frustrating to no end that there are so many projects that are either dead, non-existent, or never even got past the stage of someone creating a new project entry and posting a description. They desperately need to clean house.
It's simple. If a project was started more than 12 months ago and it *still* doesn't have any files in it, drop it. If the author hasn't put anything up after a year of announcing the project, it ain't gonna happen.
Oh, and my vote goes to UltraVNC and its SingleClick extension. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's there, I know I saw it in one of the categories, I just can't go back to let you know what category it's in because I've already voted in all categories.
- bigpeeler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I was actually surprised that I was familiar with so many of those in one way or another. Not the most reliable of all barometers, but it speaks volumes about how popular and/or practical some of those programs are. Great article. Made me feel as if my opinion really counted, unlike this loveless marriage I find myself stuck in. :-(
- d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Synergy for the win.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still don't know what the hell a "guliverkli" is, but I voted because I love my MPC. Indispensible.
"Guliverkli" sounds like a seasoning. - suppazone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I miss VLC in that lineup. It has saved me a 1000 times when all other players failed
- ScottBod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Voted for ClamAV in the security section myself. On of the best applications I use, but hardly remember it as it just sits in the background quietly doing it's thing.
- gauntalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1booo, how can they not include my award winning super awesome chess game, viva brutal chess!! who cares if its in alpha :-p
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/brutalchess - Ginjeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great this story reached the frontpage.
- bigpeeler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amen, brother. Glad to see it nominated.
- NoOnEx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can't live without gaim and phpMyAdmin.
- FarcicalFart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pfft, easy
Azureus
Maybe phpMyAdmin - G_money, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SchemaSpy is a great database utility
- fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2filezilla FTW!
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg effect on Sourceforge?
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17-zip is so much better than winzip or winrar and it is free!
- Bingor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I couldn't agree more. The Audacity developers need a thumbs up! I wish they accepted write ins
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have you tried UHARC ?
Anyway my fav is actually Virtuadub. But since it wasnt in the list I voted for Gaim.
~Indyan
http://www.pallab.net - meatbites, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So many great projects to choose from; the pain!
Actually, for Gaim, does anyone know if it's possible to sign in as 'away' as per MSN Messenger? It's way off-topic, I know, but I can't seem to find any information on it. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person with a somewhat enthusiastic contact list. - gklitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Voted for Azureus..it's definetely the best on SF.net.
- YellowBook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shareaza +1
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17-zip

- YellowBook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I should have RTFA - not nominated ;(
- Chuck95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely agree... TrueCrypt is a huge omission, as is MythTV. I voted for KeePass for Security though. I love that thing.
- whurley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, I also saw that Nagios isn't anywhere to be found.
- mortem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gaim had my vote
