- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31It's like any other software release -- It needs to be tested and debugged (hotfixes and added features).
- rajputwarrior, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23please make file transfers faster... PLEASE!!!!
- neocitron, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26imho. Microsoft should release a site like Dell ideastorm.
- ChoadNamath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18B-E-N-E-F-I-T.
;P - gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Uhm, Microsoft has done this many times. SP1 and SP2 on XP had a beta. SP1, 2, 3, 4, and the URP for Windows 2000 had a beta... yeah dude. It's nothing new.
- MrZop, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Look for added DOS support.
Can't wait to be able to play all my old DOS games again. - InsomniaSlim, on 10/11/2007, -35/+50This beta nonsense is getting out of control... what was once a term for limited testing has now become a mantra for releasing software to the general public way too soon. IMHO, it's because sales wants to hit the market earlier with underdeveloped software... corporate pressure at it's finest. A few years, and they'll be releasing alpha. *rolls eyes* A BETA SERVICE PACK?!? WTF?!?
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13They did. It's called Microsoft Connect (connect.microsoft.com)
submit your suggestions while in the beta programs. - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10So is verbing 'beta'.
- ray73864, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12actually, Vista isn't a dog, it isn't slow, and why the ***** have 2gb of RAM if you aren't going to use it?, also, the CPU doesn't deal with the eye-candy, all eye-candy 3d related stuff is passed off to the GPU just like it should be.
In XP and all other versions of windows, the CPU did all the 2D graphics rendering such as the desktop and all, what a waste of a really good 3D card if you weren't using it for games, so with Vista, it gets used.
I don't know how bad your experiences were, but i have had nothing but good experiences with Vista. - wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15Well it also includes PatchGuard APIs: http://www.betanews.com/article/Vista_SP1_to_Include_Common_Security_APIs_for_Partners/1161305514
That, and I also expect some Windows Media Center improvements to be included. I'd also like to see a modified Microsoft ForeFront integrated into Vista, since it's better than Microsoft OneCare, but that's not going to happen.
(And is it just me or does anyone else want to punch Mary Jo Foley in the face?) - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8so you should've picked it up yesterday, the day before, the day before, and about 3 or 4 days back.
- memetomancer, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13tell me about it! they really should have made Linux "work like it should have in the beginning" too! damn them software developers and their incessant upgrades!
- Wren5, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I know a good number of people that are waiting for a service pack before buying Vista.
- qkslvr221, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Never heard of DoSBOX?
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Even than you'll probably be as clueless and ignorant. What a shame.
- reevolutn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10you're ignorant. vista works fine on my p4 3ghz with 1gb of ram and a 9600xt ati graphics card. you may not notice the differences when you first start using the os. but after a week or so the little things add up to make a big difference
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7How are they trying to 'force' people ? And what is so wrong with XP that it needs SP3 ?
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I thought I was the only who had this problem. Try moving a lot 50MB of lots of small files into a USB key. It'll take forever. I thought it was my computer, but then I noticed that doing the same thing in Linux was A LOT FASTER.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Actually, there are other 'real' reasons as to why they can get a SP out the door faster. The main one is is that Vista shares the same codebase as Windows Server 2008 (Formerly 'Longhorn') and WS08 has a lot of development/testing being done/added while Vista is out, so, a lot of work carries over (Like the kernel, binaries, etc).
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6so you're still waiting on XP SP3?
- springo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I hope it won't fix the BIOS emulation fix...
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8This isn't for the public anyway -- It's not even listed on Microsoft Connect and I'm participating in over 30 betas via Connect. Expect to see it via Technet or MSDN subscriptions.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y.
- vertigoblue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Start>>Control Panel>>Programs and Features
Click on ‘Turn windows features on or off’ on the left side of the screen
Unchecked ‘Remote Differential Compression’
boo ya
p.s. also check your firewall settings (try disabling) - wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5RTM was last year.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7"And is it just me or does anyone else want to punch Mary Jo Foley in the face?"
In all seriousness, she's a great person once you get to know her. She's like Paul Thurrott. People either like her or hate her, but she's a wonderful person in real life.
(Yes I met her.) - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5And they listen, too. If you actually participate (The newsgroups, submitting bugs, etc) you can actually see your suggestions been seriously considered and find other testers who feel the same way about certain things or have a different point of view.
Oh, and this applies for huge projects like Vista, on the newsgroup testers made quite a difference with a lot of things, while some where very small (I remember some complaints about the List view being removed, or something), they still matter.
There doesn't seem to be many other companies as open as MS especially with all the bloggers they have (Thousands of employees than tons for the 'teams'). - skealoha86, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7would you beta gmail version 2.0? this isn't new software; it's fixes for old software.
hey! SP1 lines up with the release of Leopard! go figure! - oMeSSiaHo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7You mean like the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Let me tell you i am starting to hate these propagandist mac fanboys.
It is like somebody is paying them to write about why they love their apple stuff more than anything Microsoft or anybody from PC world creates.
They have trashed Digg by using it like their mouthpiece. I have never used Vista but i know one thing that many talented developers work for it and they are as good as anybody else, it is the closed source nature and army of lawyers we should dislike about them. - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I've spent 5 months on Vista and its made me hate OS X even more. seriously.
- Lane, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Paid"?
- sid0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4***** you, moron. What does it ask permission for?

***** your whiny little ass if you have problems with those. - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Is it a choice or are you born sucking steve job's *****?
- endgame, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Funny, I just upgraded on Sunday to Vista on one of my primary boxes at home. So far I have been pretty impressed it's been running great.
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Probably working on this service pack they are about to release?
And then all the countless other Software they have needs patches and new versions.
Patching security holes in all the Operating Systems they already have out and still support.
Licencing Games for their successful videogame console
developing online applications
improving search results and features
Makes me wonder how Microsoft find the time to do everything they actually do! - lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3you do realize that mid july is like a week from now right? if this article is still accurate, then they could release it tomorrow, and a few days changes should not mean a few months worth of delays
- sathias, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4From TFA
"* Performance tweaks lessening the amount of time it takes to copy files and shut down Vista machines (Yeah, I know Microsoft said Viista shutdown speed wasn’t an issue. Guess users weren’t so crazy, after all.)" - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+310-12%? It's actually about half that.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Based upon what, that single story about Leopard ?
- subbzzz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You can even install DOSBox in Linux to run/play DOS games.
- lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"If I had enough money, I would have taken this high powered machine back and bought a similarly equiped laptop capable of running of OS X. But since my Lenovo is at least half the price of a Mac with equivalent hardware"
wait, so your telling me that you honestly think that a computer thats HALF THE PRICE of the comparable osx machine should run just as well, no wait, better? logic ftw - Sluggz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Microsoft Knows this , which is why that are rushing out a service pack so damn soon.
- doubleblack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Uh...XP's SP1 came out about a year after initial release too, so therefore - XP sucks too ;)
- meshman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You actually pay attention to that stuff? I take the simple route. Too much trouble activating and authorizing? pirate it. Problem solved. I have a valid XP license for every machine but only 1 is not cracked.
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3hey, dumbass.
Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off > Off
hey look! problem solved. - sid0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Signed drivers means RELEASED BY THE HARDWARE MANUFACTURER. THIS IS NO GUARANTEE OF ITS QUALITY! You're looking for WHQL drivers for guarantees of quality.
- sid0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Are you... umm... nuckin futs? My ISP uses Linux on its routers and I have no problems obtaining a DHCP dynamic IP from it. Stop the FUD.
- squeaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When was the last time you put a fresh install of XP on anything? Assuming you start with an install disk with SP2 on it, you still need between 80-90 separate updates before you have an up to date system. That's what is so wrong.
