Vista Home Premium $269

Not paying a dime for any of that: Priceless. - PayneX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+132I'll take the Vista with chocolate syrup, sprinkles and a wafer.
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -10/+124Too many bloody versions!
- stealthrocket, on 10/12/2007, -11/+86Forget the prices for a minute and look at the confusing lineup of choices. Why not just make one damn OS with all the features in it ala OS X? Granted not everyone will use all the features but so what. Damn just make it easy.
- gremos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+77Add one more price (leaked from my home):
Full/Upgrade Version:
Vista BitTorrent .... $0

- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+65Its ok, the more expensive it is, the busier various torrent trackers will be, no big deal =P
- inkyblue2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62Full Version

•Vista Home Basic Upgrade $116 - rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -5/+64$450? Vista Ultimate better have alot more than calculator and MSpaint.
- TrInIdUdE, on 10/12/2007, -11/+57Bring in the warez crew!!
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -15/+54Not being able to play Crysys, Priceless (Oh wait.. :D)
- neomits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Interesting question: will the upgraded versions need to be WGA activated before upgrading?
hmmmmm - dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43$450!?!?!?!?!? American $ !?!?!??!!??
- cleverhanz, on 10/12/2007, -12/+47Wow, those prices are enough to get me to ditch this piece of crap and switch to a nice OS, like Mac OS X, or maybe Linux.
- Rob5246, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Yeah, a student price is about the only way I'll be able to buy that. If not, XP will have to work for a while until I get a new machine.
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -11/+39Article marked as inaccurate.
Original article ( http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=124 ) clearly states why just converting the prices from Canada dollars to USA dollars just gives a misleading price.
To quote the zdnet article:
"Update 1:55PM PDT: Hey, Gizmodo! You really, really, really need to read all the way to the end of the post. The prices you quote are just flat wrong. If converting those prices from CAD to USD is really a valid technique, why doesn't it work for Windows XP? Hmmm? I mean, Windows XP Home costs $259CAD, so us folks down south of the Canadian border must be paying $232 per copy, right? Oh, wait. The actual retail price is $199? Like I said, the two markets don't work that way." - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30"Granted not everyone will use all the features but so what. Damn just make it easy."
Isn't it obvious that Microsoft thrives off of needless complexity? - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35I've had "leaked" emails about Vista's prices for a long time.
They sure have made it cheaper.. $49 dollars..
(I hate spam.. lol) - soapboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31It has glowy buttons and cool transparent windows!!!
Seriously, I will wait for someone I know to buy a new computer. ^_^ - jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27So it doesn't sound like the price of the PS3?
What are you talking about? - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26what does it have to do with the PS3.
"Man Vista is a rip-off compared to my Coffee from Starbucks" - NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I'm a PC user and I'm hardly on the edge of my seat waiting to upgrade to Vista. While XP has it's problems, I've made my peace with most of them and I see no reason to upgrade at this time especially at these prices.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Dude, your machine must SUCK then..
- NonPC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Try before you buy:
http://www.deanliou.com/WinRG/ - floorhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I wonder how much the OEM version are?
- NonPC, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28"Not paying a dime for any of that: Priceless."
Hahahaa. I wish I could give you 10 diggs for that one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Start Sarcasm
I just got it guytirinto. Your play on words is outstanding.
You are so right and so witty.
M$ $ucks.
End Sarcasm. - razei, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27The average user will absolutely love Vista. Why? It has an new user interface, of course. :P
- prot0col, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20The retail price for Windows 1.0 was $100. Adjusted for inflation, that's equivalent to $177 in today's dollars
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20@ chris9902
They are American prices, CONVERTED from Canadian.
500 CAD is just insane...Even for the upgrade it's 300 bucks!
I think somebody is losing a little bit of money developing this.... - strom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It's called "price discrimination" and it allows a monopoly to discriminate between it's rich and poor customers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@danraydotorg
You don't have to.
You can do a clean install as long as you have a valid XP CD.
During the install it will ask you to put in the XP CD. - Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20win 98/me/2000 did not have WGA though so who knows.
- danraydotorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Yeah, I'm not a big fan of layering OS on OS like that. I think it just wants an XP serial, though. Mod me down if I'm wrong.
- wyngnut, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Interesting how the OS costs more than the computer.....
- quoigonfishin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"$450? Vista Ultimate better have alot more than calculator and MSpaint."
Don't worry. I'm sure that they'll include Minesweeper. - TH3W1R3D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wow I just relised for me (since I have windows 2000) it would be cheaper to buy an OEM windows XP then buy the Vista upgrade rather than buy Vista full.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17The Upgrade Prices
"UPGRADE versions (all prices Canadian)
Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade $299
Windows XP Professional w/SP2 Upgrade $259
Windows Vista Business Upgrade $249
Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade $199
Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade $129
Windows XP Home w/SP2 Upgrade $129" - pierrefilms, on 10/12/2007, -21/+36The sad thing is that there have been multiple articles on Digg stating that the cost of upgrading Mac OS X (which updates much more often than Windows), is more than that of Windows over time.
Yet with 1 full version of ultimate or even the upgrade, you are paying for 2 to almost 4 copies of Mac OS X:
Windows Vista Ultimate Full: $450
3 Copies of Mac OS X: $387
or
Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade: $269
2 Copies of Mac OS X: $258
I think its safe to say that Windows + its TCO is higher than that of Mac OS X. - shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19RTFA!
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18actually those prices are much better than I thought. XP was roughly $650 (CAD) when it first came out.
- danraydotorg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Good news? From the ZDnet article linked from the Gizmodo post:
"Based on current U.S. prices (which I wrote about last week), I would expect Windows Vista to sell in the U.S. for the following prices (full/upgrade):
Windows Vista Ultimate $349/$199
Windows Vista Business $269/179
Windows Vista Home Premium $239/$139
Windows Vista Home Basic $199/$99
Of course, these are guesses only. Some discounts will probably be available in the retail channel. OEM prices will, of course, be significantly lower. And I expect Microsoft to offer some enticing promotions when Windows Vista ships to encourage early adoption.
Update 8:55AM PDT: I notice some folks discussing this issue elsewhere are making a common mistake and simply converting the Canadian prices into U.S. dollars at current exchange rates. The two markets don't work that way. You'll get a much more accurate picture by doing what I've done here, which is to compare the relative prices of the new Vista versions to current XP versions and then make similar adjustments to the U.S. price list. You can do the same with other countries as well." - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Ultimate version transforms your computer into a robot that washes your car.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I'd love to see the OEM prices. Who actually buys retail Windows?
- danraydotorg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Oh, the pain, the pain...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Win2K? You mean, Windows XP Public Beta? Did you realize that you can turn off the Luna/Fisher Price interface in XP?
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19I'm not. Hell, I am still on windows 2000 and suggest my customers (unless there is anything specific the NEED in XP or 2003 server) stay on 2000 as well.
There's nothing XP does that I can do on 2000.
Built-in CD burning? No thanks, I prefer a 3rd party package.
Limit my TCP connections? No thanks.
IE7? (*laughs*)
What's VISTA bring to that party? Shiny windows? If I want something to impress the family, I'll pop in an XGL live CD... If I want to actually get work done, I'll strip XP (or Vista) down to no visual themes and have it looking like 95/98/2000 and performing optimally. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20the prices are actually not that high but in any case I am not upgrading from XP before summer 2008's Vista SP2
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I've been a PC user for over like what..12 years? And I'm sorry, I can't help but say with these prices, it's as if they want me to switch to Apple.
Apple never was attractive to me in the past. But, MAC OS X Leopard, I find it very interesting, enough to make the switch, whenever I can afford a new laptop (macbook) - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I love win2k too.
But really, do you honestly plan to keep using an OS that doesn't receive any support at all? -
