- drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -31/+191This is just gay. VISA has no right to tell me where and when i can spend my money. If i want to slide my credit card down the crack of a hookers ass, goddamn it I shall!
- scheper, on 10/12/2007, -12/+93They aren't operating outside the law, I think that's the whole point of allofmp3.com.
Plus they don't handle the transactions themselves, it's done by a third party company. I don't believe they're russian, but I'm not entirely certain.
Also, visa isn't doing this on their own accord, I bet there's been a /lot/ of pressure from the RIAA. - ericksoncn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+64So just because its Russian means we are all going to loose our money to theives or unregulated corporations? Cause that NEVER happens in the U.S.
- Wolfghost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60I'm probably in the minority, but linking to the New York Times is annoying. If you prefer a non-subscription link, search Google. Here's a few...

- shaka999, on 10/12/2007, -9/+54Unless your using a debit card I believe it is VISA's money and they can decide if they want to loan it to you or not.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45@patience: I'm afraid that you are wrong. allofmp3.com doesn't do anything with the card details... A 3rd party company in the Netherlands does.
Edit: scheper stole my words! :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42Dammit people... CREDIT != YOUR MONEY.
When you use a credit card, the bank on the card is loaning you the money. You're BORROWING their money until you pay it back. It's the exact same thing as a short-term loan. I'm *really* disturbed that it looks like most of you do not understand this simple concept.
And people wonder why we're not fiscally responsible...? - americamatrix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42@ patience
"Giving your credit card number to a Russian website that is operating outside the law is not actually a good idea, guys."
Duh, Your kidding about this right? Heard of paypal much?
This is why you use paypal and have them generate a credit card number with, say, 20$ on it.
When you use allofmp3.com you would use the generated credit card number, So, if they did try and steal money, its only 20$
PayPal FTW - cajunman4life, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36You guys are silly. This isn't Visa's money. It's whatever bank's name is tattooed on the front of the card who has the "money." Visa just puts their stamp on the card and works to ensure it's widely accepted. The money actually comes from the banks that issue the cards. You then pay those banks. Visa makes money from the merchants who have to pay a "royalty fee" for accepting Visa.
- macbwizard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34there's a difference between morality and legality
- TGKnIght, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28SHHHHHH Quiet down guys, by supporting pirates you are now an enemy combatant.
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37I think since Visa is technically fronting you the money when you purchase something, i think they have the option to decide NOT to front you the money.
- patience, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30What about a VISA Debit Card which many people use where
you PAY VISA fees so that you can use their network.
Give me a break. We are paying visa, okay. If it was a privilege,
why do we get all the junk mail. They want us to use their card.
Its good to check all sides of an argument before posting. - ToRoE, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Per original comment, I do believe that American Express has already stopped doing business with p0rn.
Last I checked, 'CREDIT' is not your money. You are borrowing it from Visa and they can do as they like or go somewhere else. Rights Vs. Privilege. Credit is not a right.
Not that I have anything against allofmp3. etc. That is a different subject. - briyan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Sounds like VISA pulled out over legal concerns, not moral concerns. Seems reasonable to me.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Come on! Even some hookers take Visa
- Karmakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13If we can import goods and services from places which don't protect the rights of the workers, things that would violate our laws then I don't see why it's wrong/illegal for individual consumers to do the same thing.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander, in other words. - becominglumberg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Visa, as a corporation, has the authority to do business with who they please - as do you as a customer. If this offends you so much, get a MasterCard.
- maukdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Thanks RIAA.....*****.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -18/+29Quite frankly, hypocrisy around this topic is excessive. I'm not complaining about what people have said here, but about some of the public views in general.
Allofmp3.com is operating within the law in their country. It may not be what the record labels want, and they are trying to pressure Russia into changing the law, but they are operating within the law there.
Now Microsoft is a company that has blatantly operated outside the law, having been convicted of abusing their monopoly on more than one occasion, and continue to operate in violation of the law. Not only that, but they steal from other companies and produce products that compete with those other companies and put them out of business. Since they have lots of money and lots of lawyers, they have successfully operated outside the law for many years.
Which company is worse? Allofmp3 or Microsoft?
How many people own Microsoft stock because it will earn them money? And how many people have purchased something from Microsoft? Are they any worse a person than someone who purchases music from Allofmp3?
Let's have a reality check here and decide what is really going on here. The RIAA is pitching that Allofmp3 will bring down democracy and destroy all that is holy and American. What a load of crap. They are just trying to make their huge amounts of money while screwing both the public and the artists. - Aggiemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Most credit cards offer a "ShopSafe" credit card number that you can generate that has only a limited amount of money that can be charged to it and a limited time period that it can be used. This is not just a feature of PayPal. Check out your card's website...I know my Discover card has it along with my MBNA (now Bank of America) card.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Visa, not Vista.
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@texpundit, ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY! People forget this all the time.
It's all about risk management. VISA has very well structured restrictions in place to limit their own risk. Processing for allofmp3.com is a huge risk for them. I used to work for a credit card processing service provider and we were directly tied with VISA/MC. The risk structure makes a lot of sense, as the final power is really in the hands of the consumer, not the business. If the consumer disputes a charge, 99% of the time, the charge will be reversed (called a "chargeback"), and this operation is expensive for all parties, especially the business. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8For everything else, there's Master Card.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@americamatrix: It would be a preferred method of any payment for me, but it's not widely available.
- rprouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7PayPal cut off AllOfMp3 a couple of years ago, so problem not solved :(
- rajah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Me too. This is what digg is all about. They help turn honest people into criminals. I can't wait to make my first purchase on my M/C.
In all reality though most people that are now turned onto AllOfMP3 will probably just use the great preview feature to scout out new music to download via bittorrent for free. Dang crooks! Dang you digg!! ;) - cybertron3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Before the RIAA started complaining about AllOfMP3, I had never heard of it. Thanks for making me aware.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well... Lemme see... Where I come from, porn is legal, but the downloading software which isn't properly licenced is illegal.
Visa have probably bowed to pressure from the US government. - zacmccormick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"VISA has no right to tell me where and when i can spend my money"
VISA isn't saying you can't spend money on that site, VISA is saying you can't use your VISA card on that site, find another payment method?
from the description:
"Since when has it been Visa's obligation to judge business morality? Will they also stop services to porn industries?"
Copyright issues aren't morality, that would be a question of legality, which is certainly one of VISA's concerns. The porn industry is different because it is legal, this situation involves illegal activity, so no, they don't have a reason to stop the porn industry.
Obviously that site has some major issues if the organization of 20000+ financial institutions are refusing to take payments on it. - EvilPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It annoys me, but a quick visit to bugmenot.com solves that :-)
http://www.bugmenot.com/view/www.nytimes.com - drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8did someone cockslap you upside the head?
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14"They aren't operating outside the law, I think that's the whole point of allofmp3.com.
"
They're violating US law. So at least for transactions involving US citizens, this is appropriate. - halik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5mod parent up, this is too funny to bury. What an idiot...
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't even use Usenet and I get them plenty easily anyway. The point here is that ALLofMP3 gives people more options than just MP3s. Oh, and don't be a *****.
- azezino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you can refill your balance by buying a prepaid card which you pay using paypal which you pay using visa
Visa > Paypal > Prepaid Card > Allofmp3.com - roaringLION, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I don't think it's Visa's job to deside what is right or wrong, but buying music out of allofmp3.com is just stupid. You're buying stolen music, just steal it yourself.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"You're buying stolen music, just steal it yourself"
Classic. - drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5haah
When i read "but buying music out of allofmp3.com is just stupid. You're buying solen music" i thought, aww this guys is noble and ethical. Then i saw the rest of the sentence and i just giggled. - darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Visa doesn't have the right to tell you where you can and cannot use your money, however, they do have the right to tell you where you can and cannot use their services.
- netferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well if you check http://music.allofmp3.com/info/payments.shtml, cant you just use the http://www.xrost.biz/ service?
It might be a possible solution. - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah smart move, know what allofmp3's counter move was yesterday? They opened up the ENTIRE library for free download (128k bps) - so yeah, great move on Visa's part, forcing them to goto a free model, supported by ads - which you can decrypt the free songs in less time it would take you to enter in a visa number, great move, yeah... allofmp3 isn't the problem, it's the ROMS org that is the problem, allofmp3 has been paying "royalties" to roms, it's roms who never paid up, go bitch and moan about them, not allofmp3.
- icky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's pretty clear some of you folks would argue with anyone about anything. Well done. I applaud your stupidity and temerity.
The U.S. government, who allows the RIAA to nestle about halfway up their butt, is trying to make Russia's membership in the World Trade Organization contingent on closing down AllofMP3.com. So there is a lot of pressure and no doubt some of that was evenly applied to Visa until their flabby little sides expanded and they expelled the appropriate paperwork to nix AllofMP3. Visa caving is not particularly notable now that we have legislation in this country that allows you to be hauled off to an island prison and never heard from again if you dare to disagree with the huge asshats that bully their way around Washington. Any one of us would surely do the same as pressure is just plain uncomfortable. It is kinda sad though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3after reading such serious discussion about copyright, my money, your money, allofmp3 etc. stumbling upon your anti-microsoft rant just cracked me up. So bad that I had to leave my office to lol.
@baalzebub: Thanks a lot for joke of the day. How does it feel, after reading the headline again? - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This happened a few days ago, by the way. Both visa and mastercard.
Also, you don't pay the site directly. You pay some other 'collection agency'. I also notice that a WHOLE PARAGRAPH describing who gets paid is missing from the article that hit the front page yesterday....
http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/10/17/yourmoney/music.php
WTF? - rbabiak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So where can you email to let Visa know that i am displeased with there action.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hahaha, totally agreed with the above!
Trigger happy trolls anyone? ;-) - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"They're not free, but they're also not drm'ed." - Not true, as of yesterday, they have a free model, and they are DRMd. 128kbps, the entire library is free now, check it out.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if push comes to shove, you will have to buy a "phone card" to buy your music.
