I am sure they will get dozens of users. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp
Claim: Vice-President Al Gore claimed that he "invented" the Internet.
Status: False. - Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I was hoping it would be more like Snow Crash.
- kzathon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10more like Vapornet
- 60days, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm going to start a network just for porn and- oh wait...
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8>"The Internet was not designed to support the data transmission requirements of real-time virtual-reality data, so the Neuronet is being created as a separate and distinct network."
Yeah... good luck getting the right of ways for that, which you are going to need since the latency of satellite isn't good. - ithon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8so they can get around the word Net Neutrality
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Sealab2021 "Is it just me or dose it seem they are copying something ?"
They likely aren't copying *anything*. These terms are ingrained into our society, and through general knowledge and entertainment, our subconscience as well.
But if you want to accuse them of copying anything, consider Neuromancer, published in 1984:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuromancer
"The novel examines the concepts of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, genetic engineering, multinational corporations overpowering the traditional nation-state and cyberspace (a computer network called the matrix) long before these ideas were fashionable in popular culture."
A fantastic book that is a first at many things, including helping popularize many of these terms which prior were much less common. It also uses some of these terms, and others in contexts that are wholly original and since copied time and again by science fiction (movies, books, games, etc), and even some non-fiction science that came to be true in some form or another.
Easily one of the best Sci-Fi novels of all time. A bit dated (murder over a couple of MB ram), but still an excellent read. - darkbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6come on, everybody:
the Neuronet is for virtual reality porn, the Neuronet is for virtual reality porn... - hello2usir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Somebody out there will get bored and set up a bridge from the internet to this VR network, at which point it will no longer be seperate from the internet.
- Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Dumbest idea ever? Why the hell would they not use the internet?
- vexvex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The IAVRT website sais that the architecture will be different from the internet. Supposedly it will all be hosted on one central server system and 'mirrored' to different neuronet servers around the world. Also vr data will not be transferred over the Internet, and at no point will the neuronet and the internet converge.
So I guess i'll have to take off my hmd and leave my virtual paradise to login into an old fashioned 'terminal' to check the weather. Yeah, great way to innovate. =/ - charlief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm interested to see how this one is going to take shape. Companies will not want to spend money on new equipment especially if there is no support for a technology that isn't proven...let alone developed yet. It would take a dedication of MANY companies to even get an architecture of this magnitude developed. I think it's a great idea..however I'd like to see a foothold first. Internet2 anyone?
- PanteroBlanco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That sentence from TFA didn't really make any sense. What exactly does this guy think the "Internet" is? The Internet doesn't have a maximum or minimum speed; it's a lot of hosts interconnected by routers. Connections between some of those points are 56k; connections between others (dedicated fiber lines, usually) are several gigabits per second.
I don't doubt that they're keeping it separate right now (it is experimental, after all), but I don't think that it has anything to do with the Internet "being too slow". Perhaps the author just decided to editorialize a bit.
"Companies or individuals must pay for network bandwidth used rather than ride the Internet's coattails, computers must be updated with software support, new standards must be created, and network hardware must support those standards."
These are necessary for any new technology. It happens whenever an RFC is put forward that enough people decide to make a standard. It's how TCP, FTP, RADIUS, and all non-proprietary network protocols were born. - h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"if not hundreds of dozens :)"
joke ruiner - jdoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8DO NOT WANT
- JAWA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree. This seems really stupid. I want to check digg.com in my virtual world too.
- viscousplatypus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally. Internets!
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How many MMOs are out there right now that do exactly what he's proposing? I mean, Second Life is already a virtual environment. Why is it impossible to do this over IP?
- NinjAlt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OH OH OH, WHERE'S CASE AND MOLLY?! WE MUST START THE ADVENTURES!
- KungFuJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sounds like the biggest vaporware since duke nukem forever
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sounds like an awesome way to lose a ton of money.
- Dou6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does this mean I will get to bang pre K-Fed blowout Britney?
- MSeven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The Neuronet's communication bandwidth and real-time virtual-reality and gaming data transfer protocols will enable...virtual-reality trailblazers to reach their full potential,"
..... my *****-meter just went off the chart....
This is either a Scam, or the company is kidding itself (or they havent hired any techies yet). - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So the Matrix started like ***** meant to collect venture capital?
- Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hooray VR!
Booo separating it from the internet. Sounds like a ***** cop-out from upgrading the tubes. I don't see a need to separate VR from the net. Unless they are trying to kill it. - Junkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know this thing is gonna be sweet for downloading ***** "virtually."
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My thoughts exactly. Separating it from the internet is a sure way to kill it. I know I don't want to install a second set of architecture at home for transferring more digital data. Sure, reinvent the current internet and see if the improvements catch on, but this sounds just as feasible as going "oh, cell phone audio quality isn't good enough, so let's create an entirely new phone network that can't talk to the existing one so we can transfer enough data to have DVD-quality audio on cell handsets". Not gonna happen.
- sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And every MMO copied *cough* Snow Crash *cough*
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not the dumbest idea ever, but it would be the dumbest investment ever. You shouldn't look at this in terms of technology (because then it's just *****), but in terms of business. At the moment there are a lot of organizations that might be willing to invest lots of money in a list of buzzwords like this.
- Kamikid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's next Skynet?
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dreamfall...............MMMMMM
- HairyFotr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But what about the virtual reality neutrality?
- gdgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@lavahot - yes
apparently you didn't read your background material for the cyberpunk course called 'life' - LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, no, it didn't. View "The Second Renaissance" Parts 1 & 2 on The Animatrix DVD. Robots, after winning the robot war, stuck probes into captured human brains and tried to generate stimuli that the human brain could process. In doing so, they were able to create a virtual world that could be fed directly into our brains.
- jtcalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The porn industry is going to have a field-day with this.
- arachn1d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really want to have a hologram type of game :)
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, at this point it seems like separating a vnet from the internet IS the only way to get an upgrade. comcast and verizon are completely content with sitting on their money and outdated networks. FIOS distribution was supposed to begin 10 years ago.
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, the bleak cyberpunk future is here and black trench coats are still gauche. Now how am I going to look like a total bad-ass?
- xister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuromancer
- kirkjaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here come the emergence of Skynet get ready for the T100
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it's about time. Those games have been clogging our tubes for far too long.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1darkbird is questioning why we need a new network for what he appears to have got anyway!
- smokinguns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont want to end up as a battery cell...
- mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In other news, internet traffic has dropped by 95%!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1only in ure dreams. fortunately (not sure who for, u, her, him, Paris Hilton or the rest of mankind). Think about it though, she was in prime 'hit me one more time mood then'
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1log off. quick. RLY
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no Virtual Reality existant today, to speak off. PCs are just not strong enough .... yet
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets create our own internet as well, to avoid the RIAA, MPAA, etc
