- soaring, on 10/12/2007, -4/+95I tried putting this article into Google translator to turn it into plain english but no go.
- naevity, on 10/12/2007, -7/+76This reads like it was written by an 9 year old, and whoever "edited" it to remove towns, shouldn't have used XXXX for every single thing, its impossible to tell who or where the guy is talking about.
besides that, its a good story. - hifidigital, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32who's got the video?
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Am I the only one who totally thought of the movie Snatch while reading this?
- kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22The British and their former protectorates. Well, a lot of them, anyway.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28He not only sounds like a psycho but it also sounds like he made it all up.
For instance, when you are making up stories you don't need to add bizarre details like 'the parking in XXXX is really bad' and 'then we all went for a slap up feed at the pie shop' on the end. - Tbro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22they extorted a guy what's so hero about that? The buyer handled it wrong, but the seller's brother is an ass that is lucky didn't show up on the wrong doorstep.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I thought all of you Brits were like Benny Hill... all running quickly through the woods with bras on your heads with 3 constables after you. It's true, isn't it?? ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I call *****.
Anything that has in the headlines "this is 100% true and legal" or some such nonsense smells of ***** worse than...well, bull *****. - Pokelicious, on 10/12/2007, -19/+36This guy sounds like a complete psycho. Vigilante, more like borderline extortion/robbery.
- naevity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I didn't have any trouble understanding the story itself, but with all the XXXX's, there was no frame of reference: XXXX is 5miles from XXXX and XXXX is 35 min further away!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. But I guess you can do that over there, since they're not allowed to have guns. Try and pull that ***** in the US and you'll get your ass shot.
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Us Brits do, for some strange reason. I can understand your confusion as I feel the same way whenever Americans give me temperatures measured in Fahrenheits.
Why can't we all use sensible metric measurements? - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Nearly impossible to read, but it was still funny.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Someone from Scottland I'm guessing. I don't know why they would but that's the only place I can think would still use it.
Edit: I just clicked on the story. How could you not tell it was in England or a protectorate? Royal mail? Come on people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21That was rather tame, I thought. If you had trouble reading that, I propose trying to watch some English television or movies and culture yourself up a bit.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Sounds like ***** *Snatch*. God damn, that was hard to follow.
- vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19a good story... true... but he is violating the EULA by accepting cash for payment ;)
From my understanding you aren't allowed to do that anymore and have to use PayPal or another pre-approved method. - violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Otto: My sentiments exactly. The American version: "Yeah some buster showed up in my hood about the celly I hustled off on his ass on E-bay, so I pulled my strap and gatted that fool."
- zaphodbblx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12sure it was legal...right up until he started to threaten violence..in the USA what this guy did is called KIDNAPPING and extortion
- tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Um.. good thing the title on digg gave a description of what happened because that story made absolutely no sense.
"Hard done by", "Nailing this bastard", "Cracking pub lunch".. were they collecting money or raping this guy?! - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13This is really not the place to troll for partners.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10From the story sounds like it was the Crocodile Hunter...
"OY Mate!.... we sittn' er' waitin for the eludin' ebay user... he should be comin' out of is' home soon...." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Dunno if you'd have time to shoot them. In the States, those 3 henchmen would be gunning you down with Uzis, to begin with. You're not the only gun permit toting SOB out there you know...
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Hey, you guys came up with this Farenheit, miles, foot, pound nonesense. We just keep using it cause we are too lazy to change. Plus it gets too cold here. 10 F sounds just too damn cold in C.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10What is so 'cool' about this? The guy didn't get robbed - the person who bought the item simply decided he didn't want it and sent it back (or at least that's what it sounds like - although the article is very hard to read).
In case you don't know it is the LAW in the UK and the EU that you are allowed a 7 day 'cooling off' period after making an online purchace, to decide whether you want to keep the goods you buy or not. (Even for eBay - although they do very little to advertise this fact).
This extortionist and racketeer was in blatant breach of that law and would do well to keep his big mouth shut, rather than boasting on line about how he and his 'bro' scared the crap and extrorted cash out of some poor unemployed kid.
Anyway who on Earth at the Register decided that this story was in any sense newsworthy journalism? It may have been newsworthy for a 10 year old perhaps - but for a respected technical journal - hardly.... - Pokelicious, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Brits. We never quote anything in number of pounds. Its always 15st 2, 13st 8 etc. etc.
- member57, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20If I ever decided to stiff a seller ,which I have a 100% rating so I will not anyway, and the SOB shows up on my doorstep with "henchmen" I would consider it a threat to my person and start shooting, as I am a gun permit toting SOB. This kinda crap won't happen in the states, only in the neutered UK. What a dumb ass, what were they going to do anyway, beat him up? Landing in prison for a felony assault for something that costs around $20.00 is stupid, idiots like these are reasons why we need lifeguards for the gene pool. ***** bullies...
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23Are you sure you want to be badmouthing the guy? :)
- 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Here in america... we have guns for people like this. 18 stones or not, S&W wins every time buddy. Be careful next time your racketeering at someones personal residence.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Seems like a lot of wasted effort and time for just a mobile headset, especially considering the Ebayer didn't keep it; not exactly the most crooked Ebay practice. It seems like these 4 fellows were looking for a good time and decided that it would be fun to intimidate this person and get a little media attention along the way.
As the old saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right. - texizboy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16F'in great. My girl just got ripped off by some MF on ebay and they do nothing to correct it. I ain't doing anymore business with paypal or ebay. Better off buying ***** from the local hoods.
- smackfu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11There's a very fine line between getting your gang to force someone to pay and actual robbery. You might actually end up breaking a law.
- solidcube, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That makes me angry just reading it. I would never have gotten into that situation in the first place, but if someone shows up with 3 guys and tries getting me to do ANYTHING, someone's not walking away.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I love all the "I'd shoot anybody who came to my door" posts. Unless they try to break in, YOU would be the one going to jail for being Mr. Badass.
Gotta love those who reinforce our stereotype as Americans who shoot first, communicate last. - cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"shouldn't have used XXXX for every single thing, its impossible to tell who or where the guy is talking about."
May I suggest "Smurf" as a suitable replacement? - chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Of course he was "advised" that what he did was legal. I'm fairly certain that debt collection laws are similar in the UK as they are in the US in terms of non-intimidation/non-harrassment as a form of debt collection. Hell, they arn't even allowed to call you more than 8x in a day, let alone show up at your house with hinchmen. I could only imagine the CITI or MBNA hinchmen out collecting overdue accounts. eBay should kick both parties off the website for violating EULA and breaking a bid. There were better (legal) ways to pursue the situation and the "brother" really would have only been out some time and effort, which he could have easily claimed on PayPal. Not to mention the justification for making him pay for the gas and time the hinchmen claimed they were owed and they all appear to be thick-headed. Sorry, bad week already. /rant/
- MrHolla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He must be a true tough guy since he's bragging about this on the Internet. ;)
- cresquin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12One more reason google is awesome: "18 Stone in Pounds = 250lb"
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13If it makes you feel better the story was made up by someone who obviously had his feelings hurt on ebay.
You are right - no person in the real world would round up bouncers and drive all over the country tracking down someone and threatening them for a second-hand phone handset. - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Yeah, it's pretty hilarious isn't it. They are sympathizing with the guy that had to pay because he was "bullied" and, it is their natural reaction to lash out against bullies online (the only place they can do it without getting a first class reminder of their school years).
None of these people would have "shot someone", nor do many of those people even own guns.
A cell phone isn't worth worth killing someone over, so I guarantee none of you would have shot anything except your mouths off, because that's about all most internet nerds can do.
As usual, mod me down if you wish, but it doesn't make anything I've said any less true. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19Ha, whereas all people with a healthily developed set of social skills recognise violent intimidation as a welcome and helpful component of modern business transactions. Bravo.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The only reason this guy threatened a kidnapping is because in England only criminals have guns.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7
Agreed. Particularly as this is an offence under the 'Theft Act', it's called "obtaining money [or property] with menaces" which could lead to "to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years." - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I really like what this guy did. In plain English:
The seller sold a mobile phone on eBay to the buyer (henceforth called douchebag). The seller sent the package after receiving payment from douchebag. A few days later, douchebag sent the seller an email saying it never got to him. The seller tracked down the package to find it was rejected by douchebag for some reason. Wondering what this reason was, the seller looked at douchebags eBay rating to find that he had purchased the same phone for less money from someone else (now called Bob). He found something he wanted from Bob, met him, and asked about douchebag. Bob told him about douchebag, and that douchebag had gotten his money back by telling paypal he never received the item. The seller was then thoroughly annoyed (as most of us would be) so he got a few friends and went to douchebags house and hand delivered the package and made him get the money.
There is nothing wrong with what the seller did. eBay auction are binding. You can't just decide you don't want an item anymore, then weasel your way out of it. - mattus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15So beating the guy up would make them a 'dumb ass', but if they showed up at your place it'd be fine to point a gun at them?
Does. Not. Compute. - wael, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12so let me get this straight, the seller initially sent the item BEFORE getting paid?
what a dumbass. - fredrated, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12These guys are thugs and psychopaths that belong in jail. If this story is actually true they will be in jail soon enough when they pull this on the wrong person.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"This guy literally ***** blue bricks..."
Interesting. I would like to see the video of that. - exick, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Yeah, what a ***** hero. He sure did have a lot of guts finding 3 bouncers to go with him and intimidate someone into buying something.
