- iTony, on 10/12/2007, -12/+52That's it, I'm moving to Europe.
- panique, on 10/21/2007, -10/+49- How loud is the car?
- It's like eleven - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -16/+54Oh god, you bought a saturn...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41thats pretty nice, and only around 14k? 55mpg!? wow..nice to see Honda is pushin it to the limit
- diggerman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36When I went to Spain I saw one of these at a rest stop and there were tourists walking around it taking pictures. This car looks totally amazing. Honda, please bring this to the USA. Here are some pics of the Type-R coming to Europe in 2007 http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/civic_type-r.asp
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41^^ Small Penis Alert
- snowbooch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38honda's continued innovation is really impressive, i would get excited if an american car company came out with something half as intuitive...it's really embarrassing
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4242 is the answer
just need to know the question now. - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32officer! the navigation made me do it! I swear!
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29the US car manufacturers seem convinced that the only way for them to work their way back into profit is by firing tens of thousands and closing down factories
if they stopped for a minute and asked themselves why so few are buying their cars, maybe they would've had better progress.. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28"To be in with a chance of winning all you've got to do is answer this simple question...
- Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Won't someone make a website that asks Honda to bring that car to North-America? I know it would sell like crazy here in Canada, and by the time the next hurricane season hits the US and oil is over $70/barrel, it should sell in the US too.
- XTrek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Of course the mileage figure is in imperial gallons(.83ukgal=1usgal). But still imagine if most cars on the US highways got over 45mpg...
- daFilms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20'a Demon on one shoulder and an Angel on the other'
my new favorite car feature. - diggerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17If you do a Google search you will see that there are no plans to sell this in the U.S.A. Also, Honda literally does not want us to have this car because they want people to buy Acura if they are looking for a car with amenities.
- Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21But what about Top Gear? That's the better car program :p
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18that's just wrong. seriously, it is things like that that make me want to move to europe for the rest of my life.
- ChuyMatt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17@ shiftt
I believe that this is a falling point of all the last century industries. Look at the RIAA/MPAA, the Car companies and the oil industry. They are all now reacting instead of innovating. The attempts to protect their interests are stiffling the ability to inject new blood and genius into the market.
This is why a fully free market does not work; all the old companies will try their best to go to the line in their anti-competitive nature w/o breaking the law. - cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23- How long is the car?
- Oh, about 9.
- Only 9 centimeters? Wow, that is tiny!
- No, Europe so I think he meant 9 meters.
- Actually, UK so 9 feet.
The importance of units, ladies and gentlement! - weiran, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25Just because a car is small does NOT mean it isn't safe. Infact, I bet that car is safer then many bigger cars.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21I'd rather have the diesel for easy conversion to veggie oil incase gas hits $5 in the us
- tjl2015, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"Could" bankrupt GM? Isn't it a little late for that?
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13When the BBC stopped broadcasting Top Gear a few years ago, Channel 5 started Fifth Gear and a few of the old Top Gear presenters went over as refugees.
Then a few years later the Beeb decided to bring a remodelled Top Gear back, giving Jeremy Clarkson essential carte blanche to do what he wanted. - scutter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I suspect that this car uses the low sulfur diesel that is not available in the US. This is what prevents the VW cars that get this kind of mileage (and much better, actually) from being sold here. If that's the case, Honda couldn't sell it here whether they wanted to or not.
Why is this fuel not available you may ask? Because the morons in the US government won't approve it. You see, diesel, even the low sulfur kind, emits more pollutants per gallon than gasoline. They can't ban regular diesel, but they can refuse to approve the new low sulfur kind. The fact that the cars that burn this fuel actually emit *LESS* pollutants per mile (because they get such high mileage) is lost on the enviro-nazis and the morons in government. - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13For a better estimate as to how much this car would cost showrooms in the States remember to subtract around 10% (state variable) from the UK price before converting to US dollars, Americans don't have to put up with an horrendously high sales tax (17.5%) like we do which will be included in that stated sales price.
- Gullop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12There is 2 shows, 1 Top Gear, 1 5th Gear.
Top Gear is far superior to 5th Gear. - Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Okay I'm confuzled, car had UK license plates... guy sounded English... Fifth Gear is a UK show... but they were driving on the right... we drive on the left.. 2:15 in to it i thought he was gonna hit that car... i was like.. ... ...WTF? was funny at 5:06 when he said the H logo goes back when you crash, then he nuts his head against it.. ouch! lol
- Lewisham, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Yep. The BBC lost Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear about 6 years ago, and then the presenters couldn't carry the show. Once JC came back from hiatus, the BBC felt the actual format of the show was not helping, and didn't make enough use of JC. So they fired everyone, and they went to create a show called Fifth Gear, which is still not as good as Top Gear *used* to be.
Top Gear *now* blows it out of the water. - Solstice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Don't blame the manufacturers - blame the American consumers. Manufactures make what people want to buy. If Honda thought they could sell that Civic here, you would bet they would sell it. In the crowded American marketplace, manufacturers are doing anything to differentiate their products.
Americans haven't warmed up to the idea of a premium small sedan yet. The Civic in that video that they were giving away was almost 16,000 pounds. At the current exchage rate, that 16,000 pounds turns into almost $28,000. Trying to get consumers to drop 28k on a Civic is going to be a tough sell. This is also why the Ford Focus in Europe is so much better than the Ford Focus in the US. Because European consumers are conditioned to the idea of a premium small car, they're more willing to plunk down more money for one. - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10he didn't say it goes back, he said it's "recessed 2cm beneath the glass so pedestrians aren't branded with an H"
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The only problem I have with the Digg synopsis is the claim that Honda "doesn't want us to have it." That's just insanity. If Honda thought they could sell the car in the middle of the rain forest to woodchucks and make a profit, they'd do it in a skinny minute. That's the way business works. If they could make money on it in the US, you can bet it'd be at your local dealership.
- smozoma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think he means in terms of sales, not safety ;)
- StuGazzO, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15clumsyninja...tell me you're not seriously comparing your Saturn Ion to this beautiful piece of machinery? I means, there's apples and oranges and then there's ***** and oranges.

So, if anyone does want to enter the competition you can do it now. - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I saw one of these yesterday before reading this article. it's a pretty impressive looking thing - looks like some kind of spaceship, and has more than a few acknowledgements of Alfa Romeo styling.
US emissions standards in common use are generally about the same as Europe. Some current EU emissions standards are tighter than US ones, even Californian ones. Someone mentioned particulates - the current US spec is 0.08, current EU spec is 0.025, so there is no way a current EU-spec car will fail to meet US standards on particulates.
This page has a nice summary (though for some brain-dead reason it only works in IE):

More details are available here:

Also many will be getting a false impression of diesel efficiency - Remember that UK (imperial) gallons are bigger than US gallons. They are both 8 pints, but US pints are only 16 oz, whereas UK pints are 20 oz. Useful to know when ordering a beer too...
FWIW, I get around 700 miles (same length as US ones!) out of a tank of diesel in my Peugeot 406. Diesels rock for town driving. Something that may come as a surprise to US readers - quite a few EU manufacturers are now building diesel cabrios! Saab, Volvo, BMW, VW are all doing it. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Note that the price given is for the diesel engine model, not the standard gas model. I believe he said the standard gas model was a few thousand cheaper.
- WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9IMHO The best Civic was the CRX. Live long little buddy.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -4/+10Why would someone think 9 centimeters, and then be corrected to 9 meters "because it is Europe"? Both meters and centimeters are both metric system units.
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+696-01 Integra Type-R, sir?
The only Type-R we have gotten. They retain their value quite well too; I only lost 5,000 when I sold it. - Skyfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Ideal for carrying small trees" ?
I can't tell you how many times I've regretted my choice in cars simply because I can't haul my collection of small trees around.
My favorite part is when he rammed his head on the Honda 'H'. - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Please explain to me why Honda does not want us to have this? Misleading headline.
- paularms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Exactly why they aren't selling it in the US... for some reason us Americans are afraid of not looking 'manly' in our cars, so we have to buy things that will overcompensate for small...
I for one think the car would be great. I've always like driving small hatchbacks and will probably end up buying a new VW Gold in the next couple of years. - tcv2.00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Heh. I love all these perceived slights on digg. Honda doesn't want {me} to have a certain car. Apple fixes Mac Book problems but doesn't want {me} to know they're doing it. Secrets Microsoft doesn't want {me} to know.
- 4tygames, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Almost all GM cars and trucks found in one division can be found in another division. For instance, the Chevy Corvette and the Cadillac XLR are the same thing, except different engines and body panels. And here is something surprising, that over $30,000 Saab 9-3 is pretty much the same thing as a Chevy Malibu.
Here are some of Saturn's rebadging:
Saturn RELAY: Based upon all other GM Minivans including the Chevy Uplander, Buick Terraza, and Pontiac Montana SV6.
Saturn ION: Uses the same platform as the Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G6, just different body panels.
Saturn Sky: Rebadged Pontiac Solstice.
Saturn Aura (Replaces the ION): Rebadged Pontiac G6, Chevy Cobalt
Props for Honda for creating something unique. - dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It was a joke, man...lighten up a little.
