- CoochiePoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was reading this thread and can't believe the comments in the actual text of the messages. I know about 75% of the people! I attended CMU from 82-86 in Applied Math and was fortunate/unfortunate enough to know some of the people commenting on the thread. It was a different time. No one kne wabout the internet and were used Tops-20's and dumb terminal to program Karel the robot as a preface to learning Pascal.

sorry @modpancake. - sebastiangomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the best stories I've read on DIGG in a long time.. so much history in it for us geeks and all in all really cool thread. Impressive that this was found on some backup tape.. :):):):)
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ha! my mom used to work with punchcard machines back in the 60's. She used to save a LOT of those cards and make things out of them. At Xmas time, she'd spray paint them silver or gold, then bend and twist them, and staple them into wreaths! They actually came out pretty cool looking!
- redshyguy504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweeeet, coolest reason to love my hometown of pittsburgh
- cepher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool...
computer history is very insteresting....dads punchcard computer he used when he was in college is now in the Smithsonian.... - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I see the __/ never caught on.
And the nose has been lost, most people just do this now ":)" I prefer the nose ":-)" The backward one "(-:" just seems awkward! - digitalunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man.. talk about evolution.

- Sonic_Molson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is old news...20+ years old.
- Twenty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I remember reading this in Mental Floss a few weeks back. Awesome to see the actual message board thread though.
- gmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if that's the firt occurance of it on the "Internet", that doesn't mean that's where it came from. I remember seeing :) for the first time on a dialup BBS around the early 80's. The author said "look sideways" and it took me weeks to figure it out because I was turning my head the wrong way.

- greenbriel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If that's real, it's very cool. What a great internet moment.
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't know about the smiley fact, but Despair, Inc. now owns the rights to ":-("™

"You cannot spell 'falure' with 'u r a'"
I love demotivators. - MobyTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I recall seeing the story of the smile's invention at CMU elsewhere, so this isn't really something that MS Research found out. Though I do respect MS Research's being not too uptight to allow computer folklore on their web sites. (Another example of this is their hosting the hilarious "Unix Hater's Handbook", though obviously they have an interest in it. :-) )
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"16-Sep-82 17:21 Howard Gayle at CMU-780G WARNING!

XD - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, a rather civilized and organized BBS, with correct grammar, spelling and everything! My how the net has declied into the AOLOLer speak . . .
- NicePaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does Scott Fahlman get royalties for every smiley typed? Do you think he's rolling around in a big pool of money as we speak? Or just a big pool of smileys...
- dvranizan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nerds were so much more hardcore back then. Would have been a great time to be involved in technology.

I have a picture of ET holding a chainsaw in .press file format. The file
exists in /usr/wah/public/etchainsaw.press on the IUS.

Does anyone have a picture of R2D2 holding a seed auger in TeX format?
Or how about a rendering of Yoda with a lathe for use with nroff?
Any pointers to digitized images of short, cute aliens holding power
tools would be greatly appreciated.

*lol* - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want the pic of ET holding the chainsaw. :-(
- Tr176, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i remember hearing about this back on Tech TV but i want to shoot the guy that started it because he caused so many annoyances... he's right up there on my list with the person who invented "LOL"... it was a good idea but is getting old and annoying they need something new change font colors for your mood
green=okay
blue=sad
red=mad
something like that... just a suggestion, i know i wouldn't do that because it's dumb but it's still better then :-) - remo2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm the first to use: 5773 instead of ells
Cool huh, wait 20 years and it will be!
remo - skippy2057, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wear glasses, so 8^)
- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting to know where it originated :-).
- akaharry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was using :-) back in 1981 on compuserve
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Five bucks says this research was used in MS's emoticon patent. ^_^
- sebastiangomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yeah?? Well I was using "lol" on an Altair and smileys all over the place with my XEROX Alto .. c'mon who cares if you used the smiley back in the early 70's, 80's or late 90's, it's still cool to dig up some text like that and have a fun read.. Let's not pretend to be Al Gore here..
No ones gonna get a prize here for being the first one to use a smiley.. Relax geeks ! (and i'm one of 'em) :) - modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm the first one ever to type "dojfbzojvbozxcbouagdfoasdgfoabjznbxlcjvnoaisdfhjiopnjoznxcvzxcv"

- torrentado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0: - )
- Zeuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool! My first usage of :) was in 1985 (3 years after) on the BBS I wrote and operated. I wrote the software from scratch and it worked with dual 360kb 5-1/4" floppys. Most JPEGS today would eat it all up in one pass.
Anyway, ah the memories. When I first saw it in 1985, I replied "WTF is that?". Yes... "WTF" was in use far before :) - dumbtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:-)
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, I hate to rain on your parade, but I know that myself and many other people were using the :) for smiles as far back as the late 1970s on the Internet, computer bulletin boards, and during People Chat on Quantum Link computer service (now AOL). I even used :> for a Swampthing mischevious smile waaaaaaaaaaaay back before 1982. Back then, they weren't even called "emoticons" and the follow-up known as :-) came MUCH later.
Bottom Line: IT DID NOT ORIGINATE IN 1982 AS THE ARTICLE CLAIMS. It's QUITE funny to think they actually claim credit for something that was already in place for YEARS before that! Perhaps next they will claim they invented the "Internets?" - Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Anyway, ah the memories. When I first saw it in 1985, I replied "WTF is that?". Yes... "WTF" was in use far before :)"
Give these egotistical dumbasses just a bit more time and I'm sure they'll claim they invented "WTF" as well as "RTFM" and many others. - ajaykilkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who did the first " lol"
- MuGuGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I, for one, welcome our old :-) overlords.
- nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder whoever did the first 8===D
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0VERY old news ;)
