- binky79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I spend 8 hours a day behind the wheel, and I LOVE podcasts. It's essentially on-demand radio. If you dont have the luxury (or curse) of lots of free time, i could understand how some people could pick up the podcast fad and eventually fade out. It's a fairly time consuming habit.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I totally agree with you.... its like my own geek radio station
- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Thats because we download netcasts now. Right Leo?
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I think this is due to some lack the strict continual releases.
Diggnation. . .every sunday night. . .im hooked
Ask A Ninja. . .whenever he gets a good question. . .i love it, but don't visit regularly to see if there is a new episode, cause normally there is not. I just wait a month at a time and check for new podcasts. - BaldMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Good question. However there is a lot of high quality podcasts to be hooked on out there.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13because even some guy in his basement is more entertaining than you.
Besides, where else are you going to find a weekly radio show about a single video game - Battlefield Podcast; or On the Media, or Washington Week. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Is this data only on audio podcasts? ... seems that way.
I think perhaps video has taken over and people (like me) would prefer to watch a video podcast over audio-only, but would prefer audio-only if I was listening while commuting.
Also I reckon video podcasts are no-where near having a solid grip in the mainstream yet, as bandwidth/broadband prices are still too high in most countries. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Do people really prefer to watch video podcasts? I like audio podcasts because I spend a a decent amount of time on the road, or shopping for groceries... time where I need to have my eyes engaged with driving/shopping, but where I can listen to things. Video podcasts don't really fill your existing downtime like that, unless you commute to work/school on a train/bus.
- GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If a random guy in his basement has something interesting to say, I'll listen to him.
- nostartnoend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Podcasts have completely changed my listening habits. I've lived abroad for years and I have always tried to tune in to NPR and the BBC streaming broadcasts at least once a week, though I've usually forgotten. Other things got in the way.
With podcasts, I listen to more "radio" now than I ever did: BBC Newsnight, BBC Today, In Our Time, Deutsche Welle Langsam Gesprochene Nachrichten, NPR's Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me!, Mac OS Ken, KCRW's Left, Right and Center, Bookworm, Mark Kermode's Film Reviews, Tagesschau Video Podcast, On the Media. Every episode of each. Almost without fail.
Most of the public fails to adopt podcast listening because the allure of podcasts isn't really evident until you've used them for a while. The benefits aren't immediately clear to the newbie, and the status quo is tried and tested. But, that said, once I subscribed my mother to a podcast and showed her how to press "play" in iTunes, she regularly listens to it.
Podcasting has only been in full swing for about a year. It'll take longer than that for it to become mainstream. You always have to remember than Joe Public isn't going to do something until he sees his friends doing it and can be sure it's peer approved. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have a long commute and podcasts really save the day; but I do understand why people aren't addicted like myself.
My friends are not technophobic, but don't really enjoy podcasts because when they are home its either music or tv; and when they work, spoken word can be distracting. Plus sometimes it is annoying to listen to radio at your computer desk. - nicksjunk123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i honestly don't know what i'd do without them...
the whole twit network, daily searchcast, diggnation, this american life, dl.tv... it's like customized daily news...without the ***** (or if you prefer, with the ***** I care to hear) - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Why would you be hooked on some random guy recording himself in his basement?
- blastradius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The only thing I have on my iPod are podcasts. I subscribe to about 25 of them. Mostly science and news, as well a few comedy entries.
- xixor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Doesn't it seem like Nielsen NetRatings estimate of 207,161,706 is an unreasonably exact stab at the number of Internet users in the US?
- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Leo has done alot for tech, and even more for podcasting. Kevin wouldn't be around if it where not for Leo, and there would be no digg. (He wrote and started Screen Savers on TechTV) Bitch if you want, but he has done a lot in his field.
- punch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm hooked, I listen to more podcasts then music these days.
Nobody Likes Onions is my favorite. - Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@interiot
I hear you. I personally swing both ways. Leo's casts are great for the road, but shows that are likely to have me laughing hard (askaninja, diggnation periodically) I prefer the video podcasts, as I tend to be sitting safely at my computer. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here, umm errr let me ahhhhh wellll umm save you the errr eighty ammm you know the eighty dollars.
Thats my Al Franken impression, if you couldn't guess. Now Rachel Maddow , on the other hand, is sharp and kicks ass. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3diggnation, twit, buzz out loud, dl.tv, windows weekly, security now, net@nite, wait wait dont tell me.............. i always listen to those. I didn't realize that I was THAT weird, but I guess I am.
- Brokenmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Audio podcasts are no longer my thing, hence the loss of interest. but the video is way better. especially Diggnation.
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3According to TFA: "counting podcast downloads is a dubious way to measure usage".
This makes me nuts. For a very, very long time in the magazine and newspaper business counting distribution numbers has been the way that "usage" has been determined. Newspapers charge for advertising based upon their circulation. When you buy an ad in a paper, you are only guaranteed that an average number of people receive the paper - there is no guarantee that those numbers actually read the paper in general, much less that they see or read your particular ad. Radio has been similar - the ratings don't actually measure people attending to the content (though it's probably a better measure than distribution).
Why should we expect, or require, a different measure for similar material distributed over the internet? - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most people are either lazy or stupid, so that said this is not surprising.
- jtjenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love podcasts! I'm hooked. I listen to them all the time and I subscribe to them.
- Ninwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So even if 2,071,617 (1% of the internet population) people regularly download podcasts, that's still a respectable listener base. It's comparable to Sirius and XM's listener bases.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Yeah....just like all these people who told us that NO ONE is using a PVR too....
The fact is like usual, they will discover what a pod cast is AFTER ITS popular not before. - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Audio podcasts - yes. Video podcasts no. Maybe when Applle's iTV debuts I'll have more interest in the video ones.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There are some great podcasts out there, but the best ones are usually talk shows, and most people don't care about hearing people talk.
The best podcast out there right now is Keith and the Girl (http://www.katg.com/), followed by most of the podcasts on the TWIT network (though I think most diggers already know that). - GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does the 207,161,706th person win anything?
- Finster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3im hooked on about 15 and i listen to 90% podcasts and 10% music
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am hooked on these weekly and daily podcasts, all of which are an integral part of my weekly and weekend commutes and routines:
- CBC's Radio 3 (New Independent Music)
- CBC's Quirks and Quarks (Weekly Science Show)
- CBC's Definitely Not The Opera (Pop Culture)
- NPR/KCRW's Le Show (An hour's worth of Harry Shearer)
- NPR/KCRW's Left, Right, and Center (Political Conversation)
- NPR's On the Media
- NPR's This American Life
- NPR/WNYC's Soundcheck (Music topics and Interviews)
On top of that, there's ITConversations.com, which has a mountain of great stuff, too much stuff actually. You can maintain your own personal queue of the stuff you want to check out, and publish the queue as a podcast feed suitable for iTunes.
All of these are managed by iTunes and loaded automatically to my iPod. - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People aren't hooked, because people don't know how to use RSS. RSS takes the effort out of getting a podcast, they just show up. If it requires too much human effort, going to a site and downloading, then they won't do it. The geeks need to find a way to make RSS more user friendly.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think podcasts will ever be hugely popular in the mainstream in their current form. I see them as very much a geek fetish sort of thing. Most people just don't have the passion and attention span required to seek out a podcast and listen to it on a regular basis.
- BaldMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would like to see thoose numbers compared to blogs. How many people read a blog now and then and how many of them subscribe to the rss-feed. Anyway, how old is Podcasting now, something like 2 years right?
- Alisic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't really see the purpouse of podcasts. If I want information, I'll read it. It's more convinient and faster. Now, like most people on digg and around it, I am a bit addicted to information, I just don't feel right if I don't get a lot of new info each day and get it regularly, but not so much that I have to be fed information while I'm driving, I'd much rather listen to music.
- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ interio
I listent to both. DL.tv is an addiction, as is diggnation. I dont spend that much time in my car (I live 7 minutes from work). I set up everything to DL while im working, then I have TV that actually worth watching when I get home.
I would love to see Leo put out some video casts, but i think him and Kevin Rose have an agreement where he never will. Kinda sucks, but what can ya do? - danieldrehmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favorite one is the Penn Radio Podcast. It's so (*&(*&%* funny.
- AimlessAbyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I subscribe to a couple dozen podcasts thru iTunes. About half are audio, half video. I like the G4 ones especially like AOTS, Xplay, and The Daily Feed. Diggnation is a must for people who use digg a lot, like me. Several of my podcasts deal with Xbox 360 and Microsoft, like Major Nelson. A few cartoon video podcasts as well. I usually listen to them when I am surfing the web, and I'll watch a couple videos in between.
- Hyperreality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@interio
I prefer video podcasts myself, mostly because I watch Photoshop and photography podcasts, but I get bored on audio ones sometimes! - nintendoagekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not as if my comment is revolutionary to some the other interesting posts but some people like me still run on dial up connection of witch I'm usually lucky to connect at around 32k I used to download some twit episodes but it takes so long and I can't use my connection for anything else So I check out pod casts to see whats around but have never stayed regular to them. I also have never even seen a video version of a pod cast.
- clyde2801, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chicken Fried Radio is an excellent netcast.
- AdamalNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I work in IT and connect into a lot of sites remotely. I think its great having a podcast going in the background. Its something to keep me entertained and informed.
Diggnation is great. I probably wouldn't be on Digg if it weren't for that!
The Broken is excellent. Even better than Diggnation. I hate to sound negative, but I prefer the on screen chemistry between Kevin and Dan in The Broken than I do Kevin and Alex in Diggnation. I look forward to more episodes! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2PC Gamer/1UP Radio/Gamercast/Gamespot are all good gaming podcasts
cant go without mentioning Taverncast for WoW - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Podcasts are as diverse as the people who listen to them. There is no clear leader becuase there are a lot of them all with small listener bases (anywhere between 2 and 200,000 but still not anythign approaching anything like 0.1% of the interent using population).
Personally I only listen to TWiT. It's funny enough to make me chuckle and has enough interesting and relevant content to keep me listening. - lunchbox170, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I listen to audio podcasts on my way to school, or when traveling. I do watch diggnation and pixel perfect on my computer. If I had a second monitor I would watch video podcasts more, because then I could be doing something productive but I could still watch it.
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If I want information I'll read it. It's more convenient and faster".
Depends entirely on your situation. Reading isn't terribly convenient when you are going 70 mph down the highway (though I have, sadly, seen people trying to do that). Music is obviously an option, but for some of us that driving time is the only reliable opportunity to get information.
I'm happy for you that your life is so free of social commitments and family obligations that you have extra time to spend reading. - MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wrong.
- BurgerDST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Netcasts have replaced talk radio for me. I listen to them to and from work. I love several of the TWiT network shows, DLTV (audio version), Diggnation, PcGamer podcast, as well as more specialized show like the Alternative Energy Podcast. Count me as hooked. They have filled the void left by TechTV's demise for me.
- triforcer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yes, a fellow freak!
look a chicken nugget! - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6What the hell is a netcast?
