- xman2000, on 11/28/2007, -0/+32I will believe it when I see it... the article makes sure to say that there will be plenty of fine print. Does this mean we will be getting a discount on the monthly fees because we are not subsidizing the purchase of the phone? Does it mean Verizon is going to allow phones to take advantage of ALL bluetooth functionality including file transfers so we can upload our own ringtones and not be tied to their music store, as touched on by other diggers? Too many questions but I will keep my mind open for now and agree that this might be a good thing...
- ACMoxon, on 11/28/2007, -3/+31Quite surprising, given Verizon's current policy (modified, restrictive firmware for its phones), but overall I think a smart business move. Leaders of the industry (Google and Apple, most notably) have said 'we're going open,' and the rest follow suit -- Verizon just happens to be one of the first, and one of the most dramatic.
- nicktx, on 11/28/2007, -0/+19Verizon Wireless' very restrictive policy always seemed to me to be at odds with Verizon's DSL, FIOS, and phone offerings. The locked cell phones with restricted features (e.g. bluetooth) and "walled garden" mobile web is unacceptable to many potential customers. I'm glad they'll open up although I doubt this would have happened if it wasn't for Apple and Google to shake up the hapless US wireless industry.
- MrBabyMan, on 11/28/2007, -7/+26It happens.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -23/+41Beat you by one minute. heh.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Verizon_opens_up_will_su ... - Lancer383, on 11/28/2007, -0/+13Just today I was starting to consider making a move over to a GSM-based carrier when my Verizon contract runs out next year. Verizon just won big points with me today. Insane megapixel Chinatown phones, here I come!
- wazzledoozle2, on 11/28/2007, -7/+17How exactly, is Apple going "open"?
OSX isn't open source, nor is unix. Iphone has no sdk... no 3rd party apps on ipods. The list goes on and on. - bgraves20, on 11/28/2007, -0/+10NO...The devices still have to work on the CDMA network... This doesn't mean support for GSM
- Konrad9, on 11/28/2007, -3/+12Aaaahahahahahahahhahaah.
Horse *****.
My Verizon Chocolate won't even let me transfer files over bluetooth.
I'll believe this when it's working in the palm of my hand. - wbxp99, on 11/28/2007, -1/+10um, open != gsm support
- haxx4, on 11/28/2007, -0/+8"Verizon insists that under the new program, all apps really will be allowed and no caps will be imposed so long as people are willing to pay for the bandwidth being used."
Does this mean that, since text messaging uses so little bandwidth, someone could create an application for texts without the high fees currently imposed on such messages? - wilf_brim, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8Did I just enter opposite world? Is this some warped April Fools Day joke from Ars? Or is Verizon going to issue another press release tomorrow saying
jk lol
I still cannot believe I'm seeing this from Verizon. Verizon, that has made selling crippled handsets a business model. Verizon who butt jams their customers with insane overage fees and keeps cell phones locked to the "Vcast Network" (aka totally lame ***** that we change 49 cents a minute for). I'll believe it when it really happens. - carpespasm, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7thank you google for scaring some sense into people you aren't even competing with (yet).
- duke, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6"Verizon, which has traditionally certified all devices and apps that run on its network, increasingly finds itself unable to market devices to appeal to every customer niche."
Brother, you said a mouthful !!!! - teamgwho, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7It's a trap!
- wazzledoozle2, on 11/28/2007, -2/+7That still isn't open, and its not out yet. So no one knows how tightly apple WILL control the distribution of software.
- colinodell, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4Too good to be true
- Kappa00, on 11/28/2007, -1/+5I'm sure xerox came up with the iphone somewhere in the past.
- bluesdealer, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4Read about GSM and CDMA. The iPhone isn't technically able to operate on Verizon/Sprint towers.
- peestandingup, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4"I find CMA to be better than GSM in my opinion..."
In terms of voice quality, I agree. - wetmetalthong, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Notice they said, "pay for your bits". They aren't going to uncap you if you buy unlimited access, assuming they'll still offer it.
- borninda818, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Very surprising indeed. I still don't believe it, there has to be some catch. Hidden fees or something.
- noahhoward, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4It'd make me happy. I haven't seen Verizon getting any good new phones lately, I'd venture a guess they're tired of folks jumping ship for better handsets and features.
- noahhoward, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Don't get a contract with Verizon... ever. /loyal verizon customer/
- Crimsoneer, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Will we get sim cards? I'm confused...
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4So in September they sue the FCC over open access rules and in November they say they are going to offer open access on their network? Something just ain't right.
- FukUrCouch, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Don't fall for it! IT'S A TRICK!!! Sounds soo nice coming from verizon right? I'm sure the spectrum auction has nothing to do with this either...
- z0mbie2099, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4Then comes the hidden fees.
- jeylux, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3hopefully it will give verizon some technology finally... and we won't have to deal with phones that are a year old before they can be used with CDMA technology.
- xStainDx, on 11/28/2007, -2/+4http://www.vzw.com/next nothing here interests you?
- DeathtoG4, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2I have been waiting 10 years for this, looks like soon I wont be ashamed to have a crappy verizon phone
- SpaceRibs, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2I never thought I'd see the day when Verizon "Disable File Transfer" Wireless opens it's doors to consumers.
Can't wait for an Arduino Verizon module - probrian, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3i think the voyager looks pretty neat...but then again thats because it looks like an iphone...and i don't have one.
- Kappa00, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking this reading sabarsky's comment and I scroll down and I see yours, haha.
- Buelldozer, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Data is a component of Verizon's revenue growth strategy. I'm not surprised at all to see this move.
- dupswapdrop, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2This is called defending your market share, once they remove the threat that is Google they can go back to the same old closed system. Then you will pay pay by the bit bit bit all of your dollars belong to Verizon.
- rizla420, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2I'm in the same boat. My contract was up last month and I have an old piece of crap phone that I'd like to upgrade to one of the new nice ones, but at the same time I dont want to lock myself into another long term contract. I might just buy a mid level phone straight up and use that until the "next best thing" comes out. Google, openMoko, whatever.
- mayonaise15, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Yep. Reminds me of the "Come to the dark side...we have cookies" shirt.
- ChimpFlix, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Good preemptive move on Verizon's part.
- shootsfired, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Correct term is "ITS A TRAP!"
- hagingtree, on 11/28/2007, -3/+5Thank god, I use Verizon and the service is great, but the devices etc are lacking, and I am in the market for a new phone now. This will most likely keep me from switching.
- m00nmaster, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2My Chocolate Flip transfers to my MBP with BT so easily a retarded blind dwarf could do it. Get off of Digg.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2no. iphone is gprs. verizon is cdma.
- bluesdealer, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1*Watches as the world implodes, the sky becomes green, and day turns to night.*
- patw85, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1No kidding even their mobile broadband card has a 5 gig limit
- MrSpontaneous, on 11/28/2007, -2/+3I dont see the point of SIM cards. VZW has an online tool that lets you activate different CDMA phones that are listed for your account, so you can use a different phone every day of the week (if you want). I find CMA to be better than GSM in my opinion...
- zman14321, on 11/28/2007, -2/+3About ***** time, now if they would just use the GSM network so I don't have to be tied down to them and can use SIM cards that would be nice.
- peestandingup, on 11/28/2007, -1/+2Basically, after all the lawsuits, this is just Verizon saying "Well, if you cant beat em, join em."
Or maybe better, "We're scared *****." - jmank88, on 11/28/2007, -1/+2sounds like i need to get me a phone running android and switch to verizon
- RCourtney, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1"Verizon insists that under the new program, all apps really will be allowed and no caps will be imposed so long as people are willing to pay for the bandwidth being used."
In other words, get use to pricing structures similar to txt msging at $.05 to $.15 per 160 characters worth of data transfer. -
