- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+165Its not unlimited. Its Um....limited Internet Access.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -2/+109That's not what the article is talking about. This is NOT the phone service.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/promotion/controller?promotionType=miniPac&action=miniStart
That's the link for the computer broadband wireless access. It does say "unlimited" but in the teeny print at the bottom, it says:
"Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess services cannot be used (1) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games, (2) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), automated machine-to-machine connections, or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, or (3) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections."
Although, for $60/mo with a contract and required voice plan, you'd think they would let you use it for what you want. - GalacticCmdr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65Wow! What a surprise - Verizon sucks and lies about their service. After having been a customer this is not surprising int the least.
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63ACTUAL link: http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20060928.html
- w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46So is it really advertised as unlimited? If so, this would seem like an obvious case of false advertising, regardless of the fine print in a contract.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42I got a 20Gb cap, and thats never enough. How anyone could survive on 5Gb is baffling, add to that the utter impossibility of not downloading all the things that Bob042 listed, hell, that leaves basically nothing that isn't prohibited content.
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Use the words "False Representation" and they will change their tone. This is the legal term for false advertising.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+45I love porn
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Absolutely. You can't call something unlimited that has so many limits set on it. In no way shape or form is it unlimited. I think the guy's got a good case. He should sue.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32It isn't for just cellphone. They sell a PCMCIA card for laptops to have internet where ever they go without having to worry about hotspots.
- ColBuendia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30In case you guys actually read the comments...
I had a Verizon Wireless High Speed card for my laptop. I was paying $79.99 a month. They sent me a letter two or three months into it letting me know they were cancelling my account as I had breached their terms and conditions agreement.
I looked at the T's and C's and they had been radically altered compared to the ones I had from my welcome package.
Long story short, they still cancelled me but I at least got them to waive the early termination fee (which they said I owed them) and go away as I had not agreed to the T's and C's they claimed I had breached.
Verizon sucks. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Or an antelope in a cantaloupe.
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33I do.
- xinul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27wireless internets is closed due to porn
sup /b/ - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Yeah... a 5GB cap on FiOS is like... putting a wild stallion in a dog cage...
- JaredRR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25By the time you pull down a Linux distro or two, you can easily hit 5 gig... especially if one of them is a behemoth like Red Hat. The last time I pulled it down it was 4 or 5 CDs. Try doing that for X86 and then grab the 64 bit version as well. Then grab one or two live CDs...
I have this service and for $80 a bucks a month, I don't expect to get capped. If they intended to do this, it ought to be in BIG PRINT somewhere... it isn't. I signed up last week and I never saw it. - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23So that means if I download a couple copies of linux I would get shut off? It isn't movies, music, games, P2P or any of that yet it still would easily put someone over the 5 GB limit.
Apparently Verizon missed the old saying, "when you assume it makes an ass out of you and me" - cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21If they tried to extort $175 from me I would threaten to take them to court for deceptive advertising.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19What if you transfer an 8.4GB DVD ISO file over corporate VPN for your DVD publishing company?
Thats Legitimate, according to the info given. - AgenteSegreto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Is it me or are these cell phone companies all turning to *****? I had a Treo 650 on Sprint with unlimited data for $10/month. Then I upgrade to a 700p and they want another $5 for Power Vision instead of Vision. Ok, I'm getting faster service now and I'll accept that surcharge. But they failed to mention that text messages will now cost $0.10 each (before they were free) and I can no longer use my phone as a modem unless I want to pay $40/month. WHA??? I just paid $600 for a new phone and now you're telling me to bend over and like it?
- cjmovie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It's still false advertising.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I use BroadBand Access, and if they ever cancelled my account for going over 5GB, I wouldnt hesitate to start a class action for false advertising. Unlimited != 5GB. Its really too slow to use for downloading movies and what not, so I usually just wait till I get home and do that off my landline, but I do a lot of FTP and downloading of other things over it (Apps, ISOs, etc).
@ lakawak.... what are you doing on digg?
@ stephenwg.... get a real isp? well, some of us need access wherever we go, even in the car - david76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Theirs nothing in their T&C which states a specific limit.
Here's the relevant portion from their Broadband Access Data page:
------
Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess:
Subject to VZAccess Acceptable Use Policy, available on www.verizonwireless.com. NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess data sessions may be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force and field service automation). Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess services cannot be used (1) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games, (2) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), automated machine-to-machine connections, or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, or (3) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess is for individual use only and is not for resale. We reserve right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using NationalAccess or BroadbandAccess in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Verizon Wireless reserves the right to protect its network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.

The $175 is an early termination fee. - flameboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@lakawak
They do have lives. Their lives consist of downloading music and movies which they can enjoy with their friends, family, or even possibly their girlfriend. That 30GB+ of data they get per month probably makes their life a lot more fun and entertaining than yours. - johnnydanger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Heh heh. Verizon is such a joke. Hpe the execs enjoy the ride down.
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13their ad people need to pull 'unlimited'. Becuase I dont know what ***** up maths lawyers take but unlimited != 5GB
- xinul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13mainly people streaming content like sling mobile. I have evdo on my q and average little over 2gb a month using sling player and streaming xm. My biggest concern is verizon will begin packet shaping or blocking the traffic all together as these activities are technically against their tos… if that happens I will drop my data plan, no point in having wireless broadband if I cant use the applications that demand it.
- jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Verizon = Bastards
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Man, i'd have to pull off a lot of torrenting, 4chan, NG, and other ***** to get that high.
SOMEONE START UP WORLD OF WARCRAFT, IRC, BITTORRENT, AND THE INTERNET ON MY PHONE, I'MMA BREAK 5GB - nirav72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Dude..Tmobile doesn't have EVDO. They run a GSM system which utilizes GPRS. Although , there have been rumors of them upgrading their data service to support EDGE soon. Which is a bit faster than conventional GPRS, but no where near EVDO speeds.
EVDO is only provided by the CDMA providers like sprint and verizon. - Emptythought, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11this seems to be a common misconception here, i can't see how they wouldn't be talking about that service where they sell you a little pcmcia card and then you plug it into your laptop for "internet anywhere":
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobileoptions/broadband/index.jsp - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"5 gigabytes! Lucky bastard!"
Up here in Canada, unless you're grandfathered, it's $100 for 250 MB on most plans.
And you get "fined" (i.e. charged) $3/MB over that. - zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I've always wondered what my cap was.
I just counted all the 'things' I've downloaded this month alone, a total of 35 gigs, give or take a gig or two. Add that on top of reguar web page traffic, ftp, and other various things. I can't even imagine what the total is. - illicium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Verizon's in your Internets, charging you for "unlimited" bandwidth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9there should be a class action suit for false advertising
- molochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I UPLOADED over 3GB yesterday(9/29). Not even 75% capacity at 384KbPS. I don't do that every day, but jeez, 3GB is nothing these days. According to my router I've downloaded over 18GB this month and I didn't even visit piratebay in september :)
Heck, I downloaded more than 3GB from microsoft this month(vista). My "porn" came to much (much) less than that. I haven't bothered to check, but Youtube and Google Video, which seem to be the only links I see any more, have to consume WAY more than 3GB per month.
Guess I'm glad I'm paying too much for cable. - richiestang78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Tiem to Sue for false advertising plus phone companies need to be sued cause they rip everyone off these days.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well, it pretty much does. It doesn't say "5Gb only", but it says "Whatever amount we want".
"We reserve right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using NationalAccess or BroadbandAccess in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels."
In other words, they can cancel your service because they feel like it. It's pretty low to charge the $175 termination fee then, though. - twaites, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8OMG!!! I had my account canceled cause I used more than 10 gigs... I know all too well about this. Thanks Verizon, for shady advertising!
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Someone in Verizon's markting deparment failed math that badly?
- aluminumpork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They sell a PCMCIA card as well. I could EASILY use 5GB on my laptop. I mean, pull all the Revision3 movies (which I do), a few Linux Distros, or some general YouTubing could very very easily break this limit. It's ridiculous to place this kind of limit on connection that is intended for use on your laptop. I have Sprint and am looking into their EVDO service (as they now offer it in my area, YAY) and before plopping that seemingly overly large amount of cash down, I am going to make SURE they don't have this sort of limit. For $60 - $80 bucks a month PLUS your regular cell phone bill, you sure as hell better be able to have a higher limit than 5GB.
- .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+740Gb shaped here, however they don't know how to shape yet so I do about 70gb per month. (No porn...)
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Would be nice if Apple sued them over the "no music/video downloading" since of course you can use Verizon's VCast... you just can't purchase from competitors.
That's right folks... net neutrality at play here.
Come on Apple! Sue Verizon. - X18999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I have SBC (AT&T) and I download at least 2-3 gigs of stuff EVERY day.
- ptrcd003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Gottta love Rogers'/Sympatico's services..they both advertised unlimited, then set a 20gb cap. This was for broadband internet, not a mobile connection. I was paying over $100 a month in overages.
- squirrelza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@zybch: Then feel sorry for South Africa as 3gb is standard at $37 excluding ADSL rental (at about another $37) and telephone rental (at about $15)
- code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6all I got from my creative class action suit (24-bit controversy) was a lousy coupon that was good on new products at us.creative.com.
class action suits only feed the liers...oops lawyers - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So who's going to file the first class-action lawsuit then?
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Verizon is controlling the number of dumptrucks traveling through your tubes every month.
