technically speaking, you are 100% wrong. And as has been pointed out, EVDO is for laptops also, and the bandwidth cap and other restrictions are clearly, teh suck - lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52Extremely deceptive title.
Should at least say EVDO in the title. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34How are the Terms of Service for say, Verizon FiOS or DSL?
- tiffany98121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29VZW launched EVDO with their PCMCIA aircards for laptops.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I am on Fios and I have downloaded over 350 gigs in a month without a warning, a majority of that occurring within a week. Fios is the *****. I don't know if its because i have their most expensive package, or if its all levels of Fios though. 50 a month for 30 mbps down (soon to be 50) and 5 mbps up (soon to be 10) isnt a bad deal at all either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Verizon = suck
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21You all realize this is because they want everyone with an EVDO cellphone to have to use their VCast service for all streaming media of any kind. Unless you are using a laptop card, P2P shouldn't be a problem, and I wouldnt have P2P open over an EVDO connection anyways.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I'm on Verizon DSL.. I nearly flipped out when I saw the headline.. damn you for not saying 'evdo' after verizon.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19@noonebutme
what the heck does being X86 or not have to do with being a personal computer? - jthebrain5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Verizon's EVDO is for laptops too, you just buy an EVDO card http://b2b.vzw.com/broadband/bbapccard.html for your laptop and it's like wifi except you use the Verizon network instead of a hotspot.
- EndersGame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13EVDO is used on many laptops and I even have a friend that uses EVDO for his desktop. If Verizon wants to keep its EVDO customers, its going to stop restricting usage or its competitors will pick up the slack.
- kickasspodcast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12er? you mean Sprint?
- walkingdogs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10sucks if you have a sling box

I hate you. I want FIOS so bad, but Verizon won't bring it to my area (Niagara Falls, NY) quite yet. And they have no plans in the foreseeable future either. Only North Buffalo, Amherst, and Orchard Park so far and no expanding very quickly. It was like waiting for two way cable to come to my area back in 2000 or so by Adelphia. But Verizon sure doesn't hesitate to advertise it like crazy and have each of their tech support people_casually_bring up how they are about to have it installed in their house. *****. Come on! I am offering you my money already!
you will never get this, you will never get this, la la la la la - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This has always been in the EVDO agreement since at least a year ago. Its just a provision to give them extra power to kick you as a customer for abuse/costing them too much. You can do all those things at least within reason and its OK. Many home ISPs have crap like this in their contracts too. Its not that they expect you to follow it, its just something there to give them near arbitrary control over legally kicking customers they don't like for one reason or another. Don't you love telcos?
- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, I was scared/excited when I read that. It's not that it was really inaccurate, in fact, it's still a fine story, but reading the summary vs. the headline and I just felt deceived.
- uahgekido, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The ban on the described services has always been in there. I've done all of them at some point for certain periods of time and have gotten no feedback from Verizon. However, the (now official but rumored forever) bandwidth cap is new. I don't think I've ever come close to 5GB in a month though.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I have verizons fios and recently got a rapidshare account as well.
Let me just say that its almost scary how I can now have anything I want in 5 minutes or less. I go through between 500mb to 20GB of bandwidth a day, and have yet to hear a peep from verizon.
@imustbeemo
They are still testing it, and it is very expensive to run new fiber lines. - kevin1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What a crock of *****. Verizon FTL.
- superdog87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Go with sprint.. They have the largest data network and the best data prices. Also a nationwide wimax network in the works. No download restrictions that I know of.
- CasualNinja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I used to think Verizon was cool for offering Fios but now I see they are normal corporate *****.
- draebor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Way to cut your own throat, Verizon. GJ.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@muyoso, thanks.
Does anybody know why Verizon can't expand their market for FiOS? Here in Vegas we can only choose between AOL, DirecWay, or Cox cable. Is there something keeping Verizon out? - ImTheManWhoRU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4verizon is stupid as hell. if they wanted to get more people to switch to them they would make this free instead of charging 80 dollars a month to be able to check e-mail. whoo hoo! btw for those of you who don't know EVDO stands for evolution data only and is high speed internet which you can get with a verizon EVDO card OR via bluetooth using your cell phone as a modem you can get semi broadband speed on your laptop.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@waterdragon
So lets assume for a second that by "cable" you mean router or modem. The difference you are experiencing could be due to the settings on the device blocking some P2P on the ports and therefore isn't Verizons fault.
Now...onto what you literally said...if you were just switching "cables" then I'm gonna call BS on your entire post. Other than having a bad (split, twisted, or cut) Ethernet cable, its not going to affect which P2P searches and downloads work.
So either way, your wrong. Have a good day. Oh, and a double digg down for that stupid government spying thing. All companies are complying with federals laws, not just Verizon. Not saying they're just or valid laws, but at least get your facts straight and stop pulling the extremist "its cool to be anti-goverment" card. - tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you can't handle the bandwidth you are promising everyone, then stop promising it! Don't punish those who are using what they are paying for to it's full potential.
- natch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've heard good things about Sprint EVDO. My family is shopping for new service, and now knowing that Verizon has this kind of lame attitude, we will avoid them for all services.
- Gatchaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Screw Verizon! This is one of the reason's why I had my company sign on with Sprint.
- hockeysmurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys are lucky to even have Verizon for EVDO cell phone internet. Here in Canada, Telus ( no Verizon here ) is raping us at a whopping $375 per month + voice plan fo 1GB data tranfser. Oh, but don't forget their bargain package: $100 per month + voice for 250 MB data transfer. It's insane.
- sharigan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32010. Verizon bankrupted.
- thewump, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No.. I can say "The New AT&T" though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Verizon sucks ass, plain and simple. They ***** you with their outrageous data rate cost, they lock down their phones and cripple features, now this. Yeah its the network alright, the network of crooks. I'll stick with Sprint, thank you.
- pinabete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't the real issue here truth in advertising? If Verizon advertises its EVDO service as "unlimited", what is a reasonable expectation for the actual performance of the service. Judging from the comments here, it's somewhere north of 5 GB/month despite what the fine print says.
When I signed up for Qwest DSL, the advertising I was going by said I could expect 5Mb/sec download speeds. Two calls to their technical support department confirmed that the line into my house was more than capable of supporting that speed. Yet, when the service was turned on, it was capped at 3Mb/sec by Qwest. Now Qwest advertises 7Mb/sec download speeds, though their customer support admits that no one gets more than 3Mb/sec in my town.
Companies continue to expand the gap between the advertising hype and fine print reality... - tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is there really a difference? It's still the same network. The article sure doesn't specify it is for cell phones only. EVDO covers both laptop cards and cell phones
- DavidYeah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They do reinforce it. If you go over an unwritten threshold, you'll find yourself receiving a letter in the mail telling you to call a number. When you call that number, they ask you a number of questions-- do you use your connection for a web server, do you stream or download videos or music, do you play games, do you leave your connection on for long periods of time.. I think that's all of them.
After that phone call, you're cancelled soon. If you don't call at all, they just terminate your account at a certain date.
But there's not a whole lot of teeth in the cancellation. Sure, you lose your phone number, but all you have to do is go sign up again. It's like a slap on a wrist; at least it was for the first time. I think they just want to try to minimize how much people do these things-- but the 50-80 dollars per month ensures that you most likely won't be permanently banned from verizon's networks. They just slap you on the wrist, and hope you don't abuse your allegedly unlimited account again.
I know this because it happened to me. I don't see how companies can get away with such deceptive advertising like "UNLIMITED DATA PLAN!!!!!" and then hide the details in tiny print that only exists on a web page. I looked through the brochure and all documentation that they gave me-- I saw NOTHING about "no streaming," which is part of the reason why I got the plan in the first place. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2was abit scared at first.Thought this was about their DSL.
- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"also prohibits use of non-verizon approved calculator, such as those differentiating between dollars and cents."
- idgaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My Dell laptop came with a Verizon card built in and I've been using their Unlimited Broadband Access since 11/2006. I've got the bills to show that I used between 2.485 and 7.221GB since then and I've never received any sort of notice or warning.
- shalomjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's the principle of the matter
- zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ok another name i have to erase from potential future buy
- KraigR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One more chalk mark on my old "why not to deal with verizon" balckboard....
- martoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to say that all the time
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@waterdragon
Don't forget, DSL speed is very location dependent. My friend uptown a bit can ONLY get basic DSL service (768k/256k) and he is lucky if he gets half that. I live about 15 blocks away, and I am paying for their 3m/768k service and getting almost max speed (2.8M/650k) on a normal day. You just had a very bad experience with DSL, but I suppose that is why people here still pay $15 more for Roadrunner with half the upload. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Verizon just keeps getting crappier and crappier.
I will definitely cancel my land line with them, even if I have to pay more to some other company!
Earlier today, i received my monthly bill from Verizon, and on the envelope, was printed
"Verizon triple freedom is here"
I thought i might write them a response:
"I got your triple freedom right ova here!
F*ck you, F*ck you, and F*ck you!"
I will enjoy contacting them to close my account! - miramardesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Verizon blows .. I had them for evdo internet and I found out the hard way that their "unlimited" service really means < 5gb. If you go over 5gb for 3 months in a row or 10gb 1 month the cancel your contract. I was paying 60 dollars a month and they cancelled my contract!!!! I would never use verizon again!! Deceptive advertising practices.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the EULA, it looks like Verizon caps at 5GB/month. I just went through 5GB yesterday. For shame Verizon, for shame.
- tach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to tether my laptop over EVDO before they officially rolled it out nationwide earlier this year. It was halfway decent then, but now it seems everything of theirs is crippled. Their phones, their network, what's next...their tech support? Oh wait, it is. You now have to pay to get your phone looked at if it's older than a year...but the two year contracts still exist. They claim the Early Termination Fees are in place to compensate for low prices on phones with two year contract. Common business practice, but the Verizon phones go out of warranty after a year. Buyer beware. As soon as my contract's expired, I'm switch to a more customer-centric provider.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is funny stuff. Friend of mine is going to dump his VZN service due to this change.
- HOOKSTER1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just a reminder, AT&T/Cingular have TONS of restrictions with there mobile services, read up on them before anyone thinks of getting them as a provider!!!
- Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be fair, their TOS for their FIOS service bans "use with server software". Of course, just about anything you do with a network involves server software. Moreover, their agreement seems to more explicitly band remotely connecting to your PC for any reason, but at the same time they cross-promote connect-to-my-PC. Go figure.
Verizon is quite clueless about what an ISP is.
However, in this particular case, the problem is that they don't have a lot of capacity on their EVDO network. They are simply trying to prevent its saturation with these rules. -
