- danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8So many problems with this as well as the post, where to start. First, no need for all caps. It's just annoying. Second, please don't post your opinion on something in the post. Just because you think it "just beat Google Earth" doesn't mean that it has "beat anything". Third, the interface for this is horiffic. Fourth, it only includes two cities. Please don't post anything else until you have something of substance and can relay the information in a mature manner. Let us grown ups handle digg until you can.
- sardonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool Idea, not the best implementation.
- Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmmm no. I found the interface a bit hard to navigate with and half the time the image was unavailable even when directly on the road, facing the right way. I like the idea of imaging from a pedestrian/vehicle/ground point of view but the interface has something to be desired. To say this beats google earth may be a stretch (for now)...
No digg. (please don't flame) - adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The info is from a company call Facet. Here is their coverage map. http://www.facet-tech.com/SightMap/Intersection_CoverageMap.htm
- HalfNakedPappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It controls about as well as my grandmother on LSD. Good idea. The execution, however, is a piece of crap.
- airedale, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you are going to post a story, at least learn how to SPELL!

Japan made this technology like years ago. The Japanese voice says, "To start, click on a blue point." By the way, I used to live in this city all of last year if people have any questions about it. For dicussion, go here: http://digg.com/technology/Video_Map_Navigation_System - Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"meanwhile, there are still 234,3435,343,232 viruses in the MS operating system - and they put time and effort into making this? not only is the interface HORRIBLE - it serves absolutely NO point. who would use this and for what (that cant already be done with google)?"
-ileadyouth
Yeah, because we all know MS doesn't have enough employees to focus on more than one project at a time. Sheesh.
And which part of "Technology Preview" didn't you understand? It's a proof of concept, not a finished product ready to hit the masses.
And just because you lack the imagination to find a use for it, doesn't mean it's of no use to anyone. There's some crazy stuff being done with Google Maps, for instance, so why should this be different?
Oh right, it's a Microsoft product, and it's hip to bash it, right?
Get a life. Seriously. - id000001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All the pictures just repeats itselfs...
- isolationism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In another 2-3 years this might just become remotely viable as a means of visual navigation, but I agree with most posters -- the implementation is balls.
I feel pretty confident saying that this article -- along with everything else I've so far ever seen posted on Digg -- is not sufficiently amazing to deserve an all-caps title. - adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a preview (not even beta). They do have images for more than two cities but for the purpose of the preview, it's limited to two cities. If you hate the interface, there is link called feed back. They are at least trying something new, and with feedback, they hopefully can make a much better product.
- fh3011, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn. I've been driving around for 30 minutes without finding a parking spot.
- Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"this is quite lame. after stealing the whole map-thingie idea from google earth, it's nice to see that they have something original, but it's worthless, and ugly."
-enovakrss
Digg needs a comment rating called "Ignorant".
First, both NASA World Wind and TerraServer (which Microsoft was originally part of) predate Google Maps.
Second, Google Earth was originally developed by Keyhole, Inc. Google just bought it.
If you want to make a point, do some research first. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't like this feature, seems clunky and too limited.
I still think that local.live.com beats maps.google.com, better looking maps, better color, etc... - a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The keybaord controls are really screwed up. Other than that, this is very cool. But does it beat Google Earth because of this, no. Best I can tell they only have a few cities.
- Daedalus13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beat Google Earth? Not even close.
- KriTenKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice but doesnt really work that well.
- cmajewski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1neat...I enjoyed finally being able to go the wrong way down one-way streets and thru red lights without causing all kinds of problems.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Over 400 diggs and on the front page?!
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its cool except its really clumbsy and the dash is just plain corny
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's right, I came up with this... go ahead and search for it, I'm sure I mentioned that this would be a good feature (I think on digg).
Now, I wouldn't say they've done it just right, but it's a start! - halc5s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg, simply due to the CAPS in the title!!! Other than that cool!
- SkiBumm4Life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neat idea, but FAR from practical at this point. Kind of annoying to use actually.
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, it reminds me of Midtown Madness or Carmageddon.
I just pegged an old lady HA! - Elric77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Incredibly LAME! Why has this "article" been "dug" in the first place? I tried Live Mail and it doesn't work at ALL with Firefox, all these live pages are going to do is make you download and install Internet Explorer. No thanks.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMFG ... WICKED!
- andywaite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw a vehicle in Glasgow (Scotland) a few weeks which I think was doing this kind of mapping. I had two cameras on the back, pointing left and right. I only saw the reverse, so didn't catch the company name, but it had a slogan which was something like "Mapping the world one road at a time". Anyone know who's behind that?
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boring
What I want to know is. When is Virtual Midtown Madness is going to come out?? - Jathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The concept is interesting, but I can't really see it catching on the way it's currently implemented. I'm sure google will look at this and make it better.
- easterlingman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is no one mentioning privacy? you can tell from that picture who is standing on the street.. people were concerned about being able to see their houses from 50 feet above! what kind of privacy questions will this raise?
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sensationalist title -1
neat idea +1
poor implementation -1
nah not going to digg this one. - DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AAAHH!!!!! Don't use "WALK" in Chintown, I just got jumped by a bunch of Triads!
- gilsmethod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry about the caps...wish I could edit after posting. The "Virtual Earth Just Beat Google Earth" obviously is not entirely truth [due to the fact that 1. it's just a preview of what they are working on and 2. only includes two cities and it's very slow.....however If they are able to include major cities, improve speed, and accessibility, it would make it hell of a product (btw a FREE product)], so assuming the aforementioned were true then it would most definitely rival Google's Mapping software...in the mean time the title did make hell of an attention catcher...and for those of you with the misspelling, I was a little careless...oops!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks like a 7 year old designed it.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool +digg
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very rough around the edges but interesting concept. I can't imagine taking all of those photos throughout the entire city of Seattle and Frisco!
- adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah ok, my bad. I guess there will be a lot of small companies like that popping up, willing to sell their data to Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo.
- andywaite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0adizzy615 - I don't think it was Facet, since they only cover the US and don't appear to use that slogan.
- Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the comments are absolutely love it or absolutely hate it.
I'll take the middle road. It's cool and pretty amazing technology wise, but the interface is clunky and it's limited to two cities. I could see how this could be useful with a better interface and more content. - jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow if this is a sign of things to come, then we have some pretty amazing things coming for us
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting feature? Want to know something else? People here can't take it that Microsoft did soemthing interesting and some of you're saying Microsoft is desperate, this is crap. That is ridicuolous. Everytime Microsoft loses with you people. You're never giving it a chance.
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow thats some nice technology ***** right there, the car looks ***** though
- adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>I saw a vehicle in Glasgow (Scotland) a few weeks which I think was doing this kind of mapping. I had two cameras on the back, >pointing left and right. Posted this a few comments up. I guess most people at digg don't read all the comments - HenryTarling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a stunning start unbelivable, but looks like a hell of a lot of work to do.
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I feel like im playing GTA2
- mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amazing feature.. needs some polishing, but still a cool proof of concept.
I use local.live.com over google maps anyday. Better maps, better control, better interface, birds-eye-view, search history, much more functionality. - gnalakalaciath5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Elric77
just download the IE tab firefox extension - l0wbyt3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Almost works. Almost doesn't cut it.
- CrumbleBeeHaHa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's awesome, keep in mind it's a "technology preview" so its not going to be perfect nor will it support every location on earth.
- thirteenpixels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. It's clunky as hell and the pictures are all awful.
