- TheMJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3for thos who don't get it: putting $sys$ in front of a filename makes sony's drm hide it. therefore, other DRMs that try to detect cd-copiers on your computer won't be able to see it.
great idea. +digg - BobCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BOGOSITY WARNING!
newtechinc is damn near to a plagiarist. He cut and pastes other people's work and does not give them proper attribution. His blog on the SONY DRM is from Mark Russinovich, and the USB sharing one is from Tom Keating. Copying an _entire_ article and putting the original URL under the word 'link' is _not_ proper attribution.
Now, on to his claim about this workaround: notice he does not say what software he used to burn CDs, and does not tell us what CD he copied. So, I have to assume there is no 'there' there, and he copied the idea from the (later retracted) slashdot post.
I await further proof either way. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony should just sue itself and send it's execs to jail under the provisions of the DMCA for knowingly and willfully releasing software designed to circumvent its own copyright protection scheme.
- chickenrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also don't understand something. I see by hiding the burner file you hide it from the drm, but... don't you hide it from yourself? What, do you just write it down somewhere, where your burning suftware is hidden? Can you still call the software up with say, a shortcut link?
- GRIMREAPER187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0funny how things get so complicated and so easy to break goes to show evolution no matter how had humans try to make things un hackable there will always be a human to break in to it sony thinking to hard forgot to check the little stuff in good ol fashioned simpsons HA HA!
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0er.. disable autorun.. never let the crap install.. then rip and burn to your hearts content? nevertheless +digg .. anything to rip Sony ;P
- metjer10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HAHA as soon as some company thinks that they are being clever they get 0wn3d good work man
- termal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a stupid idea anyway...why would you let the DRM install itself in the first place?
- Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great find!!
++Digg - newtechinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apprently there are a few different version of the DRM Protection software. Mixed Results.

- newtechinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://newtechinc.blogspot.com/2005/11/removing-drm-sophos.html If you don't want DRM active at all. Sophos has a DRM Disabler.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah it does not make much sense if naming a file $sys$ makes it invisible to the OS, how do you launch it?
- tfedullo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0question, if the OS can't see the process, aka the burning software how do you launch it?
- IntelliMoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is as good as just holding shift when putting in a cd to beat that other crap before!
- SPECTRUM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I try to rename nero7, but Nero would give an error message and stop working. Please, post your "how To" for people like me. Thanks
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YES! You dont need to sue Sony, all you have to do is just let DMR collapse on its self like a star!
- cerisaac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nicely done! But we also need to voice our opinions on how to make this problem of DRM better. Check this out...
http://digg.com/technology/DRM_the_way_it_should_be.... - Brhine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know if renaming the file acctually lets you burn cd's, but according to the original story that broke the rootkit news, you could still call the file through the command line, even if it had $sys$ in front and was hidden.
- starvingarvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0brilliant!
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OK PEOPLE, you need to RTFA! and listen to the above posts. This was discovered several days ago and posted on SLASHDOT and then later retracted because the effect COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED
I REPEAT......COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED

- austinjreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gorgeous irony, just gorgeous!
How big is this hole getting for Sony? They are truly messing with fire here and its obvious they didn't know how to control the burner! - Jadou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Absolutely Brilliant!

Yes, but it didn't put it into this context, ie. that you can use it to copy DRM'd files, even though it's intent was to do the opposite. - rjespo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't care who figured it out or who wrote it -- that *****'s ***** awesome, and that's the first time I've said ***** or ***** on this website. THAT's how ***** awesome that is (if it's true :)
- AussieGekko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is gold!
- Flyerman85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know that this reminds me of? M$ and the Genuine Advantage where you use the added manage-addons to disable it
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ROFL HAHA!!! Sony, is the idiot child.
- nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BWAHAHAHA!
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW, Nice. We can all see how bad this effects Sony, this will probably be a large story. If on Diggnation it will spread quick since Ituners are coming in by the thousands. But if not then we will see the wrath of Sony suing anyone who say's anything about it.
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could be used for copy-programs/virtual-drives like alcohol, daemon tools aso. which is blacklisted by modern copy protections like securom7 and safedisk 4.
Wonder if Daemon tools 4 will use rootkit tech. to hide it self from copy protections ^^ - abadbronc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I need to research DRM a little because I don't get it. Does the copy protection actively scan your computer for "burning software"??
I understand how the whole $sys$ thing works to hide files from the OS but I'm calling BS until I hear a better description of how this works to burn protected content. - genetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahahahahha
its like a kick in the nuts for sony - peace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0F-secure already had this on their website since the second day Mark discovered this rootkit. Still funny though.
