- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Can you please link to a website that isn't a piece of crap that actually describes this? This guy just says you can do it - but offers no mention of HOW or any specs on it. It's just a prius owner blabbing about how cool a Prius is.

- lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To all these people who think you can just hook up a prius or any other car just by using an inverter, do any of you know how many watts you need for your house?? On average youre going to need 20Kw. How the heck are you going to get 20Kw out of a Prius or for any other car for that matter? You might, just might, be able to run a couple of fans off of it, dont even attempt powering your outlets, or your Air Conditioning/Heater, unless you want to fry your car's electrical system from the draw of power your house will try to pull. Common sense, its not a dirty word.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He forgot to compare a generator hooked up to a stationary bike. By constantly pedaling, you can be assured of around 100 watts of clean, green power when the mains go out, interruption-free!
- alopindat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google cache owns you... http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:ortUvJw1q8IJ:www.priups.com/riddle/answer-1.htm
- shack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His thoroughness in testing methods and drawing conclusions from the data is very impressive. Even if his goals had failed to been met (less the death by electrocution), I would still commend him on his effort and use of knowledge to complete this experiment. I wonder if I can get my friend to try this in his Honda Insight... the warning label is a bit demeaning though: "Any attempt to service the battery WILL result in serious injury and/or death"
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man the Civic Hybrid always gets left out of these things. Some people who drive hybrids aren't doing it to be seen driving a hybrid.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Oh, and the other stupid thing. What the hell is he talking about "Instant-On: Yes" - So your car will start itself up in your garage if the power fails? That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.
Ever heard of Carbon Monoxide poisoning?"
What the hell is so hard to understand about that? So it runs off the batteries as soon as soon as the power goes out and then the engine kicks on. Well i'm sorry you don't have enough common sense to install a exhaust fan or something or hell even a hose going outside. - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does it also help to power the grow lamps in your pot garden, seeing as your a bleeding-heart hippie if you own one of these."
ROFL I just ***** my pants! - HiddenS3crets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally a good use for the car, and it doesn't have to be exposed to the world this way either =D
- tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this reminds me of that time i tried to take over the world with a Prius

http://www.tehjs.net - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** thats reason enough for me to get one.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The article assumes that you plug your car into your house every time you come home, and that you park close enough to not run an extention cord from down the block. and it were parked in your garage you would need to open the garage door to release the poisonous gases from the confined space attached to your house. and if the power is out because of a rain or snow storm, your garage is more likely to be flooded with water deck chairs and vagrant animals
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow. You can use any car as a generator with modifications.
This is stupid."
The Prius makes it much easier. All you have to do is hook up your stuff to the battery (with some power converters of course). Compare that to your example of using any old car as a generator.....haha what an idiot. Good luck with that one. - akamia123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry but the $700 I spent on my generator before this last set of hurricanes seems like it was a better deal than the $22,000 it would cost me to buy that Prius.
- fallingstars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and the site is down.
- rossini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those who commented that a Prius makes an expensive generater, try taking your significant other anywhere on a generator.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see why this is a big deal. Can't you just plug an DC to AC inverter to an ordinary car battery to do the same thing? Sure, an ordinary car won't start automatically when the battery gets low, but leaving the car outside at a low idle should be more than enough for the alternator to keep the battery charged.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The bad point about the prius is not the design, is that thing coming towards you without you noticing and being hit by it.
- DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats cool!
+digg! - screamokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AWESOME, lol i want to try it
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the designer of the site needs 2 be fired
its fugly
but
i doubt this can power my house (for long at least)
i got a MINIMUM of 5 computers running at ALL times
sometimes 35 total (i host websites for some ppl, game servers)
so that a LOT of power.
so might need a few prisis..... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg for sheer wtf'ness.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how does he plan on having the Prius start at the Instant that the power goes out? Permanent "expensive" generators wait 10 seconds after the power goes out to make sure that its not just a flicker or momentary brown out. It takes more energy to start an engine than to run it for 10 seconds.
If every time I came home I had to plug in my car and hook up an exhaust outlet, I'd spring for the generator. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be sure to get one to keep next to my computer ;)
- GRIMREAPER187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im sorry a generator is still cheaper to purchase in case of a black out i guess if i already had a prius i could run an extention cord to the house in the middle of the night for heat and worry about the car getting stolen
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its not that ugly, i would prefer a little more appeal but its not that bad
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, lilricky, you just can't read.
It's called "talking like someone from marketing." Like saying "Partly Sunny" instead of "mostly cloudy." You say "Power your house!" instead of "Run a few things." - catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0let me just say that having a prius do this when the power's out is PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAMP
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would've been nice to have an adapter for my Prius on Christmas day when the power went out at 7am...
At least we had a wood stove as a backup heat supply :P - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0F* the Prius. Hybrid is not enough. I want full Cold Fusion power and a Death Ray.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It isn't to run your entire house, it's to run your emergency stuff for when the power goes out. You know, a radio, maybe some lights. Not the washer/dryer/fridge/freezer full time. Maybe if it's going to be a few weeks of power outage, you could run your fridge/freezer for a little while every day to keep the temp low.. But this isn't a way to get off the grid.
- spangemonkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not about using a Prius as an alternative to a regular generator. It's about coming up with alternative uses for what you already have. It's what hacking is all about.

> as your a bleeding-heart hippie if you own one of these.
Yeah, well, the nice thing about that is the feds won't know the difference... a power cable running to your prius could be charging the car... or it could be powering your grow lamps, keeping you off the data mine watch list.
...don't worry, i won't sell you kids any unless they ask politely. - LtJimDangle2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect
- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a generator is cheaper than a Prius
- renamed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If i had this car during hurricane Wilma, i wouldn't have lost power for 2 and half weeks.
- Limitzorz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet. I can power my house with my Prius? Tight. No digg, though. Too tired.
- danielos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow. You can use any car as a generator with modifications.

May people who think like this die in a natural disaster for which there is no international aid. Or die from an infected paper cut while taking an English class and trying to learn how to spell "Japanese" - lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"It isn't to run your entire house, it's to run your emergency stuff for when the power goes out...."
Exactly, the poster wants you to think you can power your house with it, just wanted to say thats a crock of manure. - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh, and the other stupid thing. What the hell is he talking about "Instant-On: Yes" - So your car will start itself up in your garage if the power fails? That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.

Lame. - colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0ugly, slow and expensive, though a cool usage.
- ccunni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1but its so ugly
