- nihil72, on 11/20/2007, -2/+153For the love of god, what does the man have to do? He finally gets quit of his record label and he STILL has to put up with all this hideous, legalistic *****!
'The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers'. --Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part 2 - ninandnirvana, on 11/20/2007, -1/+131Dugg. More of trents effort to bring to world of music into the digital age. Glad to see him keeping it up.

- dvsbastard, on 11/20/2007, -8/+65LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!!
- wheelzr, on 11/20/2007, -1/+55Digg loves Trent Reznor.
- NJank, on 11/20/2007, -0/+51MERFOLK you insensitive clod. What is this the 19th century?
- indecisean, on 11/20/2007, -2/+45a good start.
but this day in age...
i say that's not good enough. - shredomatic, on 11/20/2007, -0/+42Good to know there are some artists out there who know what the ***** is going on, unlike Prince.
- heypetray, on 11/20/2007, -1/+40MARCH!
- dagooh, on 11/20/2007, -0/+37I can't wait for Trent to release his next label-less album so he has full freedom to do whatever the ***** he wants with it and to let the fans interact with the music in any way he likes.
Right now it seems the suits have him by the balls with this issue, it's sad... - GrimPraetorian, on 11/20/2007, -5/+39an old joke?
- ittlemoe69, on 11/20/2007, -2/+34Trent won't give up on this. It's far too important to him and everyone. Fight those ***** Trent. People like us are behind you.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+25Hey trent, why not team up with the pirate bay and just release it in Sweden! yarrr!
- TheMeatball, on 11/20/2007, -4/+28Lame. I don't think Britney is going to suffer a life-changing loss if someone samples "Toxic" for a NIN mashup. All this is retarded and has no real purpose.
- kurozang, on 11/20/2007, -1/+24***** labels. go trent.
- demonbaby, on 11/20/2007, -0/+20This is much bigger than Nine Inch Nails or Trent - the important part here is the last paragraph, the excerpt. Read that part. What NIN is going through is just a tiny little example of the tip of a huge iceberg of how the internet could change for the dramatically worse if lawsuits like this one and the Viacom suit are successful.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+17If the media corporations keep up these copyright wars, the future of digital media is going to be quite depressing.
- Artemisian, on 11/20/2007, -1/+17The record labels just don't seem to get the point, huh. Digitalisation is well-nigh impossible at this point; stop trying to hold up progress.
- heypetray, on 11/20/2007, -2/+18Actually, it's because he's an advocate of the material he creates. He understands that his fan base is largely against the organized bastardization of the modern artist. And regardless about whether he ever 'sold out' to Universal is rather irrelevant now that he's changing his path and fighting for an advanced industry that wasn't available at the time. I'm the man, and you're the man, and he's the man as well, so you can point that ***** finger up your ass.
- tmluning, on 11/20/2007, -8/+23Jesus ***** Christ. Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get more convoluted...
- babydaddy6, on 11/20/2007, -0/+13Lawyers don't have to utilize their talents supporting stupid lawsuits...by the way, they can file their own lawsuits...just as bad as the lawyers are the dumb-ass judges who hand down ridiculous rulings!
The legislative branch may pass the laws, but if they are stupid, it's up to the judicial branch to essentially judge their worth! - haydesigner, on 11/20/2007, -2/+14You obviously have no idea about the story behind the making of his first album, Pretty Hate Machine.
(hint: the label, TVT, did not 'make' him... they tried to bury him) - Dwebtron, on 11/20/2007, -0/+12PUSH!
- grimstar, on 11/20/2007, -0/+12CRAWL RIGHT UP ON YOUR KNEES!
- goldenratiophi, on 11/20/2007, -4/+16Peh, it's nothing 'till it's OVER 9000!!!!
/shoot me - facultyx, on 11/20/2007, -0/+12it's hard to stop an idea who's time has come. the internet is the wild west but it provides many of the fundamental utility needs that marketing groups strive to fill. it gives us what we want, when and where we want it and now that all these bands are coming to the end of their contracts and aren't reliant on the majors, it can provide quality for a low price. win win, unless you are a major label. why they continually fight what they could embrace and potentially exploit is anyone's guess. radio was a threat back in its day. i'm sure the internet and its loose boundaries, freedoms and nurturing of creativity will become just as much a part of the status quo as radio has over time. scary and exciting. i'm glad to see bands like radiohead and nin being brave and trying something different. it's inspiring!
- erictheninja, on 11/20/2007, -1/+13I think they were riding a bus.
Why would they ride a bus if they were rich? - markperia, on 11/20/2007, -4/+16you win the internet today my good sir.
- felipe82, on 11/20/2007, -0/+11That's why you have to own your masters since day one. If you're a musician, don't ever let a record label to take posession of your songs for a distribution deal. Ever.
Steve Vai did this since day one with a little effort, but it paid off. - mkpgrl, on 11/20/2007, -4/+15I love this man. He makes the ***** world turn in the most unique way.Listen and support!!!!!
- alienate, on 11/20/2007, -0/+11I'm curious to see how this who-needs-labels trend plays out. Will artists be able to make enough money without the clout of the labels pushing albums and tours? Will the decrease in overhead from the label cut equal out the loss in revenue from the machine, or will only super-huge groups (NIN, Radiohead et al) who already have an enormous and established fan-base be the only ones to make it through in one piece.
- wentwj, on 11/20/2007, -1/+12Before the internet the best way for him to get out his music was a record label. Thats how the music industry worked. The problem he has is that it hasn't evolved. It seems from all I've read that his motives were fairly pure, and what he really wants his his material to get out to his fans. Back in the day this was done the easiest through releasing Cassettes/CDs nationally or world-wide. However, the internet is the new way media and there's a LOT of things that could be done with it that aren't. He wants to explore that and the record companies are trying desperately to stop it, hence he breaks with them to continue.
I really don't see a contradiction. Just because an artist makes money doesn't mean they 'sell out'. - fkr3, on 11/20/2007, -6/+16Well you sure showed me.
- nuzz, on 11/20/2007, -7/+16I'm reading this while listening to the new Saul Williams album NiggyTardust. These are frustrating times but I do believe that we're reaching a normady-esque battle of new vs. old media. Get ready.
- Casedot, on 11/20/2007, -1/+10A lot of his music he made before this type of content became as widespread as it is on the net. Back then that was the best way for him to make money and at the same time get his music to as many people as possible, but now there are alternatives and these giant labels are creating huge obstacles for people like Trent Reznor because he is going to take away a lot of their profit.
i think this is a big problem with digg... all of the 15 year olds on here lack any ability to see beyond what they read in the past week. This kid doesn't seem to know that Trent has been creating music for a long time. - techlyc, on 11/20/2007, -6/+15It annoys me a little when people use that line out of context. You do understand that WITH CONTEXT, it was spoken as a reference to an easy means to tyranny and power.
http://www.spectacle.org/797/finkel.html --- educate yourself. :)
I dugg you up, however, because I agree with the rest of your statement. - jon30041, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10Yup, he's a VERY Pretty Hate Machine....
- salmonmoose, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8This is a valid point - however these bands command quite a lot of respect - and I think are the prototype for the next generation of 'online' record labels.
Trent is a great example of this, he has a huge fan-base, and loves music (and has quite eclectic taste) - all he needs to do is say, "Hey, this is cool, go listen to it" and some proportion of his fans will. This is how Marilyn Manson got started, and more recently Saul Williams - I'd never have downloaded that album without the NIN tie in - but it's great and I've thrown money at it.
I don't think this is the death of record labels, I think the smart ones are going to get rid of the suits, and get high profile musicians to run them, for the sake of music, not money. - PureRED, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8Old Media vs. New Media.
In the future, it won't matter. Copyright will be obsolete. - HunterTV, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8It's the second wave of the meme which usually occurs after 4-8 weeks of little or no use.
- tschau, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10Please don't describe legal battles over entertainment as "normandy-esque."
- NJank, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8the radio is for talk. for all else, there is bittorrent
- atonement, on 11/20/2007, -0/+7His new album launches tomorrow! Grab it! Year Zero Remixed!
