U.S. Unlikely to Yield Web Oversight Yet
Federal officials seem inclined to extend a deadline for privatizing control of the Internet's address system.
By Jim Puzzanghera, Times Staff Writer
July 27, 2006
WASHINGTON -- The federal government appeared unlikely to relinquish oversight of the system for assigning and managing website domain names after a Commerce Department hearing Wednesday raised broad concerns about giving an obscure Marina del Rey nonprofit unsupervised control.

- rtakach, on 10/12/2007, -10/+41Why wouldn't it come from a republican? Like the only people out there saying the internet shouldn't be controlled are democrats? ***** people....get off the partisan politics already.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -27/+57I'd like to see Japan given some internet control, as well as France. (Don't digg me down just because you hate France; they actually have some of the best internet in the world (2 gbps service just launched) and their stance is p2p is akin to the pirate part).
- halfcockedjack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30The Register's report is inaccurate. The US is maintaining control for the foreseeable future.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -18/+37Does this mean other countries are actually going to contribute some money into it too, finally? Or just "run it' while the US pays for it? Good question.
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yeah, and one year later if you google "Greatest Event in Human History" you'll get a Wikipedia article about the Cultural Revolution. Not the internet I want.
- wetworx, on 10/12/2007, -33/+47I blame Bush!
Uh, oh, wait, this isn't a bad thing, Ok, I credit the democrats, some how. - Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15China has done more to move the internet forward? The majority of their efforts has been in limiting the internet, not advancing it.
- GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18China? Right, let the communists have control over the internet. Sounds like a plan to me!

^^ The internet in preparation to be shipped to its new governing body. - kweee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If nobody else wants the internet, I'll take it!
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15No country should have control. That's the point. It should be governed by an organisation similar in makeup to the UN. All countries involved with an equal vote.
- form3hide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12yeah, lets give control of the internet to an establishment like the UN... afterall, we all know how successful the UN really is ::rolls eyes::

- Stompp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The only thing the US is letting go of is a lot of the bureaucracy... they still control the root file, so not much is really changing other than the appearance of the US ceding "some" control...
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'll wait for the Internet Nano.
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8In case someone (like me) is wondering what the root zone file is all about:

Looks like root-servers.org is a busy website with news happening all the time /sarc - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18Congratulations, you're everything that's wrong with the US.
Go ahead, mod me down ;)
P.S: Could you get off of the WWW please, that's Europes toy. Get lost. It's ours. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13LOL, I still can't believe that senator said the Internet is a series of tubes.
I mean, everyone *knows* it's a series of PIPES. - apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I don't mind sharing the net. It's just like telephones-the US and Canada get all the easy-to-remember area codes/dot-coms while everyone else has to use their own country code instead. Yay North America!

Why do you assume he's Republican? - jmjjg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Correct me if I'm wrong but the U.S. did not invent the Internet, but a programmer from the international research laboratory CERN did."
I'm sorry but you're wrong: the Web (as in Tim Berners Lee) is merely an application of the Internet. Http is a protocol used on the Internet.
The project began in the US, then began using a French concept ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclades_Network ), but I'm sure the Internet, as we know it received evolutions from other countries as well. - ender52, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9wow, how long did it take you to come up with that one?
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7He may have been right about Japan, though. I haven't heard anything about them blocking references to the Rape of Nanking or the Bataan Death March yet.
- M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's not true, the US Government still has veto powers within ICANN.
- warhorse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Thanks gthing, I always thought George W Bush was the most ignorant man on earth but your post has proved that that is not the case.
"Why share if we don't have to?" Who is this 'we' that you refer to? You are not claiming that you own the internet are you?
What an idjiot... - DigiRaven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7haha. China? Wow what pill did you take?
- gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@notfaded1 The last sentience of your submitted article. "The US has recognized that it can no longer hope to control the Internet. The next step is for everyone invited into the party this time to recognize that they too play only a small role in the global revolution that is this jumble of interconnected computer networks." They did not ceded power they just recognized that ceding power is inevitable. Hasn't happened......Yet.
- jeremyczu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I agree, except only for China. China is a land of values, excellence, technology, and freedom from government intrusion on your right to.................... make cheap goods? CHINA? you have to be kidding!!!! I don't want to have all of my resources filtered and chopped up more than baby food. Even though the US has control of the internet, we are one of the the only countries with anything to lose by abusing our power. China on the other hand...... well, just try to ask anyone that was at Tiananmen Square if China is worried about abuse of power.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Only if you send your internet before tonight. I sent an internet to my friend and he didn't get it for three days.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it is not true beccause the govorment dose have veto power. but in reality it is true because nothing has ever been vetoed.
- there, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4
Is it just me or does anyone actually understand that if any country disappeared tormorrow (including the states) the Internet would continue to function?
ICANN doesn't really control the Interent. It's mainly responsible for DNS. Countries are already free NOT to follow DNS conventions if they wish. However to prevent the Internet from breaking up into a zillion zone-- it's rationally been turned into a global organization where every nation that participates in the Internet (all of them) can have some input.
All that's really happened here is other nations will be participating in technical standards officially rather than unofficially (the way it's been working for the last decade or so). If the America (or any nation for the that matter) doesn't like it-- nothing prevents them from splintering into their own DNS system where everyone is worse off. (Which no doubt would have happened if ICANN wasn't internationalized)
Some of you guys are so petty. Imagine if TBL had suggested since he invented the WWW... therefore the W3 should only be controlled by Europe. Grow up and start being human beings again instead of just selfish patriotic airheads. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maybe its because your comments are usually ignorant and add nothing to whatever topic you are commenting on. I don't see many comments that state that Hillary Clinton is a man, or that liberals cannot think for themselves modded up, do you?
- bjsiders, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Nobody is telling you to stop using the Internet. He's saying stop demanding to have control over it.
- cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nobody can control the internet!
IT'S A SERIES OF TUBES. - endtime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Great...now some bureaucratic bunch of idiots get to screw up the Internet. It works fine the way it is, and there is absolutely no good reason to change it.
- Trention, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Inaccurate.
Accurate story:
http://digg.com/tech_news/US_to_continue_its_control_over_ICANN - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I know! This article is ridiculous. Shame on theregister. My faith in it as a reliable media outlet has always been wavering, but I believe that an article like this is now going to cause me to place it in the same category as John C. Dvorak rants and Fox News.
- ZMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@fr34ksh0w
did you go past this site? http://www.nic.mil/cgi-bin/consent_no.cgi
cuz i got scared - Cooperjones, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7You are actually right. The reasons other countries or entities want to control the Internet must be ferreted out. Why would a country that has no freedom of speech want to control the worldwide web? Obviously for political reasons. I agree with your basic reaction to the problem -- however your economic crudity has attracted some effete criticism of a perceived good ol' boy stance. This effete criticism of the US -- usually European -- is what has traditionally cowed us into giving away the store. It makes us feel somehow like crude Capitalists -- when in fact, we are victims of national jealousy at our God bless'd good fortune and tenacity.
We cannot cow to this effete and elitist criticism of our purported "control" of the Internet. This is preying on the basic goodness and goodwill of what it means to be an American. We are not purposely controlling or misusing the Internet.
It is often said that when you are being accused of something -- it is the person accusing you that is projecting their OWN issues upon you. In this case, anyone who says that the US is out for abject control of the Internet for its own gain should themselves be under our strictest scrutiny. And throw China onto the list for good measure, anyway. - JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Let's remember that the US is the pillar of free market capitalism."
Well that's the problem, they want to make as much money as they can off the internet. So that leads to multi-tiered internet where you have to have huge money to reach a wide audience. It totally kills the freedom of the average person to reach the world. So many voices will be silenced and only the interests of rich corporations will be heard (just like on TV and in the newspapers now).
Sharing control of the internet with other nations is beneficial. That way one single nation can't ***** it up. Right now the U.S. is in the position to ruin the internet, because of its control. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5because we must share our funds and everything else the us has becuase other countrys cant fend for themselves
- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Ho hum, and the Democrats are funded by unions, lawyers, and media companies. Quid pro quo."
@ThatsUnpossible
I just want to point out that media conglomerates are big business and control roughly 90% or mainstream news. Big business favors republicans because they regularly give generous tax breaks and subsidy. Management and editors weed the force of reporters and tend to favor the right wing policies that favor the rich. Unions are increasingly weakened in the United States and can't compete with the level of lobbying big business does in Washington. There are lawyers that lend aid to the left, but it's a pretty elite group. I don't think the contributions are on the level you imply.
I will concede that the democrats are part of the problem. They're not nearly left wing enough in my view. People look for a third party today because these two factions of a right wing party repeatedly fail to represent the interests of middle and low income people. Change is definitely welcome. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That could be the dumbest idea ever.
