- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Beer is never "in". It's just beer, and it's a part of most college goers lives. I'm sure there's more beer drinkers in college than iPod users, so this article is pretty pointless.
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18When is the last time someone bought 10 cases of iPods for a party? I'm guessing it just doesn't happen often.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15-It's friday night, and you come to a party with a case of beer.
-It's friday night, and you are sitting in your room listening to your iPod with your headphones on.
One of these things is now more socially acceptable, especially in college. - Enjoikr3w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Nothing surpasses beer in popularity. iPods dont make girls look better.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I don't know... I use my iPod every day and while I like beer I don't drink it every day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yeah, beer is like the popularity baseline measurement. Like, "the popularity of this trend is 15 beers."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Misleading, of course ipods would be more "in" than beer. But if they based it on actual use, beer would destroy ipods in popularity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10sorry but ipods don't get you laid, and sex is always going to be more popular then anything.
- bwoodall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10that depends on where they're wearing them
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7RTFA. The survey has been made for the past 18 years, and only twice has beer *not* been the #1 "in" thing (the internet taking 1st spot once and now the iPod).
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7what losers did they survey?
if someone asked me, you can have 400$ worth of beer, or a 400$ ipod... i would take the beer
ipod isnt really even a fad anymore, so many people have an ipod simply because its a decent mp3 player, especially for it's price point. If you got a ipod, noone really cars anymore.
you cant walk up to some chicks sporting your ipod around your neck and be like "hey baby, 4GB ipod nano... wanna come back to my place?" ...
but you can go upto some and be like "hey baby, i got some beers.... lets go get smashed" - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The problem with this sort of comparison comes from the fact normal (healthy) beer consumption is an occasional activity, limited most often to the weekend, while normal iPod usage can occur every day. It's like asking college students: "What's more popular, sex or ink pens?" While I find myself having pens way more often than I have sex, it doesn't mean I wouldn't always choose sex over an ink pen. The two are simply incompatible for comparison, like beer drinking and iPods. Even limiting each to its independent realm, you still can't compare them--since beer drinking is frequently a social activity, while listening to an iPod is a (usually) more personal activity.
- SeanMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Do u even know what everclear is?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I started on vodka moved to everclear and then backtracked to beer. I have to say that while everclear is a great way to get drunk quick it does nothing to make the night fun and memorable.
- zentro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why not?
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"He's a Pledge, When he wakes up, make him listen" - it just doesnt sound the same..
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4-"The margin of error is plus or minus 2.3 percentage points"
-"Nearly three quarters, or 73 percent, of 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were 'in'"
-"This year, drinking beer and Facebook.com, a social networking Web site, were tied for second most popular, with 71 percent of the students identifying them as being 'in.'"
Stat 101:
If two data points fall within the margin of error, you can't make a strong conclusion about their relationship. - SeanMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm sure college kids everywhere never mix drinks and ipods.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5beer isnt popular, its like pants
since when is wearing pants about popularity, its about not getting restraining orders against you and charges for indecent exposure - mvnicosia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's probably because you call them your mates.
My girlfriend is my "mate", she drinks rum and vodka instead of beer.
Cheers! (as you would probably say) - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ murdats:
In the SF area, iPods are like pants. In Cupertino, you can be arrested for not owning an iPod. And in San Jose, Levis and the Gap have been forced to sell jeans with enlarged change pockets large enough to accomodate a nano.
(OK I made that up) - craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iPod - Low calorie, and with Nike attachment can lead to weight loss.
Beer - Tasty but filled with high, empty calories. Can lead to beer gut.
I still go out several times a week, but if I didn't use my iPod I don't think my health would permit it. - jadenguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Ipod better then beer? That is just another stupid opinion. It is not a fact.
I don't like beer, and I don't like the Ipod."
not better, more popular, which is defined as the opinion of the stupid.
ALSO
400 dollars of beer is roughly the amount it takes to get over a bad relationship. a 400 dollar ipod will be able to play enough of harry nilsson's "One" to get you through at least 5. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Following in Nike's footsteps, Bacardi is now partnering with Apple to introduce iBeer for your iPod. Can't decide what to order? iBeer will tell you. Forgot how much you've had to drink? iBeer will tell you. Are you drunk enough to drive yet? iBeer will tell you. You just wrecked your car into a telephone post. iBeer will tell you.
- ArchibaldTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to party with those guys!
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some people can only mix drinks with their iPods. Downloading a compendium of drink recipes and cocktails to their iPod that is.
- The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the ipod is so great why doesn't it have simple volume up and down button on it? Tell me that college ipodiots.
- dommickey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I could live without IPod but I'll be dammed if they try and take away me beer
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This whole article is *****. Poor College kids spend money on Alcohol.
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, because the San Jose Mercury News is the most neutral and unbiased source on this subject. {edit] Perhaps a wider sampling of college students is in order. 100 campuses, 1200 students total. Average: 12 students per campus.
That said, I'm so glad that the world news leader that is the Mercury News has provided this Pulitzer-calibre piece of investigative journalism. Reported as OK this is lame
In other news, al-Zarqaawi is dead - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1spin wheel left for volume down. spin wheel right for volume right. it works just like a physical knob. give it a try. really, it's not hard to figure out.
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> When is the last time someone bought 10 cases of iPods for a party? I'm guessing it just doesn't happen often.
Either you've been going to the wrong parties, or I have some really nerdy friends. :/ - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"no, but you could refer to the ipod edging out facebook to within /- 2%"
Margin of error says there is a certain level of confidence (usually 95%) that the actual answer falls into a range, in this case 2.3%. So, what they are saying is that they are 95% sure that the iPod is 70.8 - 75.8% and that beer is 68.8% to 73.8%. These ranges intersect quite a bit (3%), which makes it hard to draw conclusions. (my math may be a bit off)
I agree that people abuse survey results way too much. The worst is articles like this, where the journalist lists the margin of error and still tries to draw conclusions. The american public doens't understand either, and believes the conclusions like they are fact. - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> If the ipod is so great why doesn't it have simple volume up and down button on it? Tell me that college ipodiots.
Because it doesn't need it? - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Then why even comment on it, eh?
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1no, but you could refer to the ipod edging out facebook to within +/- 2%
the beauty of the survey is you can say something a certain way and make just about anything true, for example: "51 percent of americans voted for bush." hmm, not exactly a false statement, it just lacks some qualifiers that the casual observer may not discern. my biggest question is which universities were surveyed; large urban, large rural, small private, large private, etc. so many different socio-economic variables to deal with, and they're not even mentioned in the article. - NLStitch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1REPLY-TO:
not better, more popular, which is defined as the opinion of the stupid.
Agreed - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Maybe it's just me and my mates, but things like rum and vodka are more popular than beer with us.
- TenMinuteParty, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Here's the final say...
It's 9am, you're walking to class using your ipod. Totally hip.
It's 9am, you're walking to class chugging a beer. You're an alchoholic.
One of these things is now more socially acceptable, even in college. - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Obviously this survey was not taken during spring break. If it were every one would have said the best thing was iBeer, iChicks & iSex :)
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Where the hell did they get most of their responses? Bob Jones University?
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4nothing says your cool like when, you know, like totally we all have the same stuff, you know. totally dude.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3to classify as a dupe, it has to make it to the front page.
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1LOL!
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3@ywong137 while chuckling
perhaps we should use beer as a monetary measurement, as in: "sir, that beer'll run ya 5 buds and a coors light" - NLStitch, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1To bump into someone who actually is crazy enough to **** himself off with an Ipod, like you
- NLStitch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Ipod better then beer? That is just another stupid opinion. It is not a fact.
I don't like beer, and I dont like the Ipod. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Beer is gross! All I need is a bottle of everclear and I'm good to go :p. So IPOD to this survey.
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Hey buddy, there are multiple dupes of this story already on digg.
The original is this one (you even commented on it): http://digg.com/apple/Survey:_IPods_More_Popular_Than_Beer
Let's promote that one to the fp, shall we? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Hey buddy, it has spelling errors. Heh, hey buddy.
What is Digg?
