- Catachresis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+99meh. i've played loads of better shots than that.
whether or not they were in Mario Golf is entirely irrelevant. - whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+60Read Etheo's comment: "That reminds me of a question: How do you throw a ball so that it moves in one direction, stops at a spot for a while, reverses and then comes back to you?"
That is an old physics riddle :)
You throw it straight up in the air. The ball "hangs" in the air motionless in the brief moment during the change between ending its accent and begining its decent. That is how you you throw a ball in one direction, have it stop, and come back to you. Can't believe that so many people replied to your comment and missed that you were citing and old riddle.
He wasn't talking about the golf shot in the article, but was asking you to use your minds for a second. His question/riddle has nothing to do with spin, just gravity. - Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47the angle doesnt look like it could be possible, unless that ball was spinning in place stuck in the rough until it cleared past the last few blades of tall grass and then whooosh..
Definatly the most unique golf clip ive seen.. if golf was like that more often i could accually watch it. - whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34If you are going to demote golf from sport to pastime, at least do it with style:
"Golf is a good walk, spoiled." -- Mark Twain. - deut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36...or the crowd on the edge of the putting green all collectively blew at the ball. :-)
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -9/+43Not tech per se, but highly entertaining. Though you might say it practically defies physics.
- 12Volts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34There needs to be a sports section - because that was worth seeing
- Chromain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Hah - I retrieved my forgotten password just to digg your comment up.
- haxr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36um.. hax
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35Better than the final shot in Caddyshack IMHO.
- Dunadan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29He probably had an aimbot.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Things like this make me love digg more than any.
Dugg, because Digg needs a 'cool' section. - SpacePirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25"A bad day playing golf is better than a good day at work."
- jarcoal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29it was rolling down a hill
- willlangford, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25yoda did good on that one!
- HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Maybe not tech (unless you consider the science involved), but it's definitely appropriate for the "links" category. ;)
The ball probably wasn't spinning. It apparently sat on top of the grass until the weight of the ball was too much for the blades to bear and they collapsed, sending the ball rolling. - bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I like hearing the crowd's reaction but ***** newscaster's annoying, incessant news voice kinda ruined it. Still great video!
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15You did hear the blowing sounds in the background didn't you?
- sabbac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15i'm not rich, i play golf, you jackass.
- dubloe7, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20use the force well he did.
- snoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I would bet my local golf course has more people hour use per square foot than my local soccer field. I mean I wouldn't bet a huge amount but it does seem to get a lot of use compared to the soccer field which seems to just sit their empty most of the time.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Though I doubt a ball would stand still before moving backwards."
Actually, every object is still at some point while reversing directions. Basic calc, man. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How do you photoshop a video?
- jonom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Golf and sex are about the only things you can enjoy without being good at. - Jimmy Demaret
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Although that was a pretty "good" (lucky) shot, it in no way was better than Tigers (intended) chip in of the side of the hill at the 2004 Masters.
And for all of you that say that Golf is not a sport, you have obviously never played more than crazy golf or "pitch and putt".
The skill and fitness (hey, don't ask me how John Daly does it) necessary to be a top golfer are equal to most professional sports if not higher, especially the "Skill" part....You try and hit a little ball 400 yards with a bent stick and land it on a 10' x 10' area...
[crickets]
Yeah, thought so.... - SpacePirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You play your shot from wherever it lies. So if the ball is in the cup before your next shot, it's perfectly legitimate. That's why points are known as "strokes".
- Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12That reminds me of a question: How do you throw a ball so that it moves in one direction, stops at a spot for a while, reverses and then comes back to you?
- carniv0re, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The PGA Tour had better start monitoring digg.com for golfing coverage piracy.
- Xeppo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's just you.
- picneec13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i couldn't agree more.
- crossthread, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Who's stopping you?
- aoeu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8A spin. Though I doubt a ball would stand still before moving backwards. Perhaps unless the ground has loose particles which need to be cleared away by the ball before friction.
- SGreth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Bad shot, and a lucky break. That pretty much sums up the game of golf!
"I'd rather be lucky than good." - Brutal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"That reminds me of a question: How do you throw a ball so that it moves in one direction, stops at a spot for a while, reverses and then comes back to you?"
you throw it with an underspin. - carebearwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That was an amazing 'shot,' per se.
It's nice to have the odd break from all of the tech news on here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5be the ball, Noonan....na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I thought that was a Churchill quote (good walk spoiled), but I must have been confusing it with this:
"Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into a even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose." - dmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I work at a TV station in Des Moines, where this happened. Talking to our sports guy told me the angle of the camera defies how much of a downhill that portion of the grass is. The Ball landed, and was really only hanging on the rough by a blade of grass, after a moment, the grass let go, and the ball rolled, it SHOULD have caught on the fringe, and shouldnt have broke with the slope of the green toward the hole, but then again, its Fuzzy... he's wacky like that. It looks flat, but it isn't.
- dengar69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Nice shot, I wonder if Tiger Woods called Fuzzy to offer him some fried chicken.
- sheesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How long does a ball have to sit there before the shot is considered "over"? If wind blow the ball into the hole 10 minutes later, does that count?
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The more I practice, the luckier I get.
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Spin had nothing to do with that shot. The ball sat for a good 10 seconds before rolling backwards. Any spin would have stopped due to friction. It's a simple matter of a downhill roll into the cup.
- noobalicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you look closely in the crowd you can just barely make out O.J.... apparently he's still "looking for the real killer"
- radix33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fuzzy Zoeller is known to make practice golf gadgets, maybe he was playing with one of his trick ball?
Anyway, go to www.pgatour.com for a better video and you will see his reaction afterwards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Very cool. I wish I could do that.
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very nice!
Reminds me of Tiger's own miracle shot at the Masters last year... it was a chip-in on the 16th that ended up saving the game for him. It was the first time a golf shot really had me on the edge of my seat!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-60BgDPHpw0&search=tiger%20masters%2016 - dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the ball actually *stops* on the edge of the cup for a brief second. The cheers from the crowd become so loud at that point that it seems like it was the roar of the crowd that actually caused the ball to rock into the cup!
It's what I like to believe anyway :) - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LAWL, that's just wrong on so many levels.
These 'rich, white guys' you speak of, why would they be cubicle slaves? - Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The man's got mad skillz!
- SamboGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome shot! +Digg
Fuzzy goes to our former church on Christmas and Easter (A C&E Catholic as I call him.) He really didn't seem like that friendly of a guy. I've also seen him around eating at places and stuff. It's pretty cool. I used to go to school with his son. He was always getting into trouble. -
