nLite has been doing this automatically for a while now, certainly better than doing it by hand - joseph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn, this sucks, I get paid to sit there and install this *****!
- joshwehatetech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have used RIS and Ghost on literally hundreds of machines and really never had a problem (if there was ever a problem it was during data copy). Need to remember to sysprep your machine if you are using 2000/xp and using a domain in windows.
- brandon_w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did this a long time ago, with this website, but it's useful and only vaguely known. I can digg it.
- Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't new, but it's still good information.
MSFN has been at the forefront of providing this info for quite some time now.
I'll give it a digg! - macluvjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@josh
agreed. ghost is the *****. and we clone 15-20 machines at a time. but for the initial image this is nice.
dugged - innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1freeware btw
- CigarJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never really bothered including drivers and the like because half the time when I got around to using the image all my drivers were out of date. I SlipStreamed and Unattended Disc is helpful with any system you have.
- Naguero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have used that guide many times. digg+++
- guhappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nLite is the way to do this.
- joshwehatetech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does nLite make modifications or does it have the ability go capture contents. You should also check out http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/ (g4u) also.
- Phaedrus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been slipstreaming my Windows install CD for years now, but I always wondered how to accually get all the other things put into it. Thanks a bunch.
- pyorre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's been dug before, but it's so great and should be known by all people who need to install windows a lot. Following those steps has made my work life much much easier. Most of the computers I work with have had their floppy drives removed, so I can't go the normal M$ preferred route by doing an unattended install with a floppy and the windows cd. It's also really handy for laptops these days. Slim laptops don't generally have floppy drives anymore.
It's really nice to have everything on one CD. You just put it in, boot from it and go do something else for about 45 minutes. - bytor7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do A LOT of Windows installs as part of my job. The unattended CD I created has saved me more time than I can describe to do other things at work. There’s nothing like putting in a CD on a new system and coming back to a fully patched XP SP2 install. I did use nLite for a short time. That was until some of the apps people use at work started to act buggy. After finding this site, I have had no problems with my unattended CD after 150+ installs. Every app works just fine. It may take more time to setup an unattended CD manually, but I will trade time for stability. After you make your initial CD, making changes and updates to it are really easy. This may be a dup, but I’ll still digg it.
- bluffdweller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems to me you can do the smae thing with Symantec Ghost
- aten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IT MADE TOP OF THE YEAR !!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i know its a great site...
have a few custom made windows cds of my own too ;)...

DIGG - sxlixz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its called Norton Ghost ya flippin nubblets. i def like my iso. no install, just copy
- halfeaten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shouldn't the title be Unintended windows install? ;-)
- AnusBreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** ghost, its all about partimage
- cooldude127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0juanfgs:
i've wanted something like that my whole life. the one thing i loath the most is doing those repetitive installations of windows. - StuGazzO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree wholeheartedly with digeratiprime...Ghost used to be good. We've been using Acronis for over 3 years now. It simply rocks! Das Germans make goot softvare!
- mijoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unattended install is good for small operations, Ghost is good for larger operations with static images, but RIS and GPOs are king for dynamic and/or large orgs. (and free with the server licenses)
- MjrParanoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS has included this type of tool since the days of NT.
Not a bad capability to be aware of, so, good article.
I see a lot of people talking about ghost.

1 You still need to install the OS at least once. The resource kit tools MS has can get you a basic winnt.sif file that can give you an automated install with a plain old cd or network source and network boot cd.
2 It's also great for repair installs
3 It sounds like some of the people using ghost haven't heard of sysprep. Google it. - jerdman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is an article describing the same thing but is a bit more straightforward and simple: http://www.networkclue.com/os/Windows/install/unattended-install.aspx
- kdkirsch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great. Thanks for digging it. Microsoft should give more effort to promoting this option since it is definitely something plenty of people want.
- igutekunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been looking for a while, and hadn't found this. Digg++
- mjc2928, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good info, nice looking site, CRAPPY Navigation. People read a page from top to bottom, add a "next page" or "continue" link at the bottom. Frustrated me to the point that I stopped reading.
- bradzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great resource. Download the PDF! dugg.
- mijoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 18 000 were initially deployed every-which way from native load to ghost, by various admins all over the state. As they are replaced though, RIS is the method generally used (in conjunction with Group Policy Objects.
- ScottTFrazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting. I'd played around with the Unattended project over on Sourceforge a while back (which lets you do unttended installs over the network with a CD or even PXE) This looks like maybe it's better documented, though.
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/ - Mike_N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool, just did it and it worked... Only thing i did different was that i used ISO Recorder as posted on Digg a few days ago to create the ISO once i had compiled all the files... :)
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also there is a guy in the MSFN forums who is building a gamer edition of xp soon to be released, if you are familiar mindows its the same guy. should be cool stuff.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My friend hooked me up with one of these, it works like a beauty! whenever my computer gets a virus or over run with spyware I slap this baby in, and in 30 min I have a fresh computer. copy my music/personal files/programs/drivers from a DVR and everything is back to normal in less then an hour. unattended windows install, it works for me!
- nacho32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use ghost on a fresh boot install all drivers and patches then image it with ghost, never had a problem yet. Now I'm waiting for a flash drive I can just put the ghost image on:)
- aubrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used nlite to build an unattended XP install CD geared toward gamers, with all the slipstreaming/hotfixes,drivers (sata, ATI, NVIDIA, etc), required applications and utilities, and none of the extra crap you get with a regular install.
Anyway, the end result is amazing: Windows boots in 10 seconds on an older XP 2500+ system with a 6600GT, and 13 seconds on an AMD 64 3700+ with 7800GT SLI, and audigy 2 card. I'm measuring windows boot time as starting from the second windows gets control from BIOS, to the point where you can navigate through the start menu and launch things.
Also on those systems, once booted the XP 2500+ is using 70MB of ram, and the 3700+ is using 90MB. Thats a lot of savings.
The 10 second windows startup demo is good enough that I've gotten several people to build their own nlite disc after seeing that. - bugmeno19135, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Question for someone who used this before. I have bought a Gateway and I was shocked that they don't give you an OS CD in the package anymore.I thought you had to own the original OS CD to be able to use it but that is not so now. So I just called them on the phone and they said that with this PC I don't get one. So I had to make my own back up Cd's which I just used one DVD to make it. That being said can I use this to make a bootable CD/DVD from my backup that I had to make should things ever go wrong?
- rmcc8, on 09/20/2008, -0/+0This happen to all windows system only. that's the reason you should have registry cleaner.
http://registry-cleaners-soft.com/ - racerxyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know how to bypass MS Office Activation wizard?
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anotehr vote for using NLite and this site for the Service packs and hotfixes
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/ - greygoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIS > unattended CD's
- alanmarchman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the site's navigation doesn't work in Safari, but I still dugg it like a mofo.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used an unattended CD for a while now ... it's sorta funny to watch people reloading Windows to sit there and hit next, next, next ... lol
- cooldude127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is great, I set it up with some default applications, like Firefox, Ad-Aware, AVG Free Edition. Also set it up with default users, a custom boot screen, a custom theme, and all the latest updates, including the one for the WMF vulnerability.
I'm happy. - ph33rm3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0knew about this a long time ago, but dugg anyway, it's usefull for people who don't know about it
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, it was on 1337 diggs when I saw it!
- nukey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIS works fine over here, in less than 30 minutes i've got a XP SP2 install including Acrobat Reader, Mediaplayer 10, Flash, Shockwave, SMS Client, Citrix Client and some other things.
- behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very old information. I've been doing this for years. This is essential for any good tech support professional or IT engineer, though, so I digg...
- mtupker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sort of thing has been around for a long time. a better thing would be to setup a 2000 or 2003 server and setup RIS. That was you can do the same thing but without a CD, and have any software you want preinstalled.
- OAKsider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unintended Windows Unstall - :O I get it!
Great story, been using nLite like everyone.
Excellent docs at MSFN, clean and easy to navigate. -
