Let me give you 100 reasons people use UltraVNC instead... - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that hamachi and vnc is dead simple. I've been doing this for months.
Digging it because it's so goddam cool. - FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, VNC is hard to set up? I must be some sort of ultra genius, then.
- ajmuir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks good.
Does not haveing a static IP address hinder this in anyway?
Or do you just dial into the Hamachi IP 5.x.x.x and that stays static regarless of the internet connection IP. - cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Egad. Like others have said... if you need help setting up VNC, you probably shouldn't be using it.
- halfabee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Logmein.com is a good tool (I use it), but it does NOT do the exact same thing.
Logmein gives you remote desktop.
Hamachi creates a VPN connection between multiple computers. I'm gonna get my brothers in a big WAN over LAN. Couldn't do that with logmein.com... - cnmsales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ultra VNC's Single Click option is the best. Great for fixing mom dad and freidns and familys problems.
- ZarZax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been doing this for awhile now and it works great. Especially well if you have users behind a NAT firewall and don't want to mess with port forwarding [not to mention the obvious security benefits].
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"$19.95 per month is what's wrong!
We need elegant answers people, (elegant means free and low work)"
logmein.com - KorbenDallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never heard of Hamachi until now. I use Ultr@VNC for the extra features.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VNC is good, UltraVNC is better; but my favorite is Remotely Anywhere for $100. You can still use the hamachi to tunnel, but RA is so much faster and provides more administration features than VNC. Also, theres a JAVA viewer, ActiveX viewer, and a plain HTML viewer.
If you want a free version, logmein.com uses uses the remotely anywhere engine. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tight.
;) - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this was common knowledge. Yesterday, when I first heard of Hamachi, it's the first thing that popped into my head .. Also, I set up an FTP server and disabled WinXP's file sharing on the Hamachi adapter. That way, it's alot more secure, plus, since I don't have XPpro, I can setup permissions and other such *****.
Hamachi is great when you don't want to ***** with your router. It just works!

The commentators at Digg seem to have something in their butt that is transmitting to their keyboards. I didn’t make this tutorial for people who have their own custom setups with compiled programs in Linux. I set this up for the people in multiple forums who were asking on how to do THIS task with HAMACHI in windows.
I don’t care if you want to post alternative programs , that’s fine. But you don’t need to blast my character. If you want to correct me on a certain aspect , fine. I like Constructive criticism but there is no need to call me stupid or this tutorial stupid. Saying “this is stupid” is not Constructive Criticism."
You guys really need to lay off. Seriously , stop being so mean. He made it for people who don't know anything about the subject. That's why it's called a ***** goddamn tutorial you idiots. - Xyrx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cannot see how securing a remote control connection is needed. It's graphical data, with keystrokes sent back and forth. For someone to dig through the pile of data being transferred back and forth looking for keystrokes could take forever.
- svc_strife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep good way make a vnc, although i've already been doing this +digg
- clarky85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This sounds like someone is just repeating the steps that Steve Gibson was talking about on the podcast Security Now. He even links to the GRC website for the passkey which is run by Steve Gibson. He could have atleast given some credit to him. Kinda seems like a rip off.
- jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Especially good for the reference to the grc site for eleventybajillion bit encryption keys, as this is something easily overlooked by those who will benefit most from reading the tutorial in the first place.
- CableGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VNC?
I'm a big fan of NetOp. NetOP Encrypts the traffic from point A to point B, and allows remote execution of applications, installation, file manager, and remote reboot/logoff, so on/so forth. You can even configure it to have a "request help" button in the traybar that will let end users submit a help request to IT staff so they can help the user when they need it.
Still a neat article. - Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UltraVNC is a lot better and has encryption plugins.
- dramatools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you need Mac OS X on either end or want an open source VPN layer, check out OpenVPN (http://openvpn.net/). For better VNC performance, try TightVNC for *nix or UltraVNC for Windows. I personally like using Wine and the UltraVNC viewer as the *nix viewer hasn't changed much over the past 10 years.
- waiwai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Running FreeNX on Linux (normal X Windows doesn't have persistent sessions) and Remote Desktop/Terminal Services on Windows gets you much better performance. VNC takes freaking pictures of your desktop, it's pretty primitive in comparison to those two.
- navigatenet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0little confusing at parts, but good overall walkthrough
- slyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only thing that would make this worth a digg is if they somehow added a right click option to hamachi to remote control via VNC
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like UltraVNC via Hamachi, but LogMeIn wins when I'm behind a proxy. At least until Hamachi supports HTTP proxies.
- greenrider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What happens if your computer at work is secure - behind a firewall and locked down to prevent software installs. Are there any remote solutions that would let me tunnel out to my home PC through a web interface, sending all the traffic through port 80?
- rayde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd never used nor heard of hamachi before, so this article was useful for me (even though it's not at all complicated to setup vnc)
- techoftheday, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0VNC is a bit pricey, I think...So are most of the other tools mentioned above, such as GoToAssist and LogMeIn. I find Techinline Remote Desktop www.techinline.com to be one of the most reasonably priced tools on the market at $30 a month, and since it requires absolutely no installation, it's very easy to use as well. My clients who are not too computer literate absolutely love the simplicity of starting the remote session, so I'm finding it very useful.
- bikeham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"what's wrong with gotomypc?"
$19.95 per month is what's wrong!
We need elegant answers people, (elegant means free and low work) - lochness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, it's nice and all.
But I get the same results, with zero configuration, AND for free using www.logmein.com
The free version lets you do full remore control of the remote PC from any web browser anywhere without having to setup Hamachi or VNC Viewer or any of that stuff.
It's encrypted. It works. It's easy. It's FREE. - talwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would have used this to connect to my home pc from work, but they block outgoing requests on nonstandard ports so im pretty screwed. real vnc uses ports 5800/5900 to listen
- Ambimom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Logmein does exactly the same thing...is free....and isn't so friggin complicated to install or to understand
- Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hamachi's great for online gaming and a nice tutorial. digg++
- saddad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like TightVNC simply because I'd like to access on some computers that I cannot install programs on.
- bikeham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0logmein.com doesn't work with Tiger as a client.
The javascript doesn't download in firefox or safari :(
It looks nice otherwise, but you have to login twice to use it? - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hardly utlimate.. Things like writing down the IP is pointless, as you can just copy it from inside Hamachi..
It's hardly complicated to set up anyway, Hamachi has a decent tutorial when you first run it, the VNC servers setup can be as basic as changing a password and clicking Okay, then you just put the computers Hamachi-IP in the viewer and click connect..
- Ben - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It takes a tutorial to figure out VNC or Hamachi? It's like, dead simple ... come on
- bikeham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Even ultravnc is too slow, unless it is over the LAN.
FreeNX may be a better solution, at the end of the day. It lacks a simple/free XP server however.

- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0VNC via SSH Tunnel is the more secure way to go...
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How about FreeNX?
http://freenx.berlios.de/ - Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"It takes a tutorial to figure out VNC or Hamachi? It's like, dead simple ... come on"
Agreed. - AjaxDiggz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0From the comments at the bottom of the page, purportedly by the author:
"But there is no reason to call me an idiot and names just because you think you are “cooler” than me."
Where did he get called an idiot? Not found on this page or on his. Just a lil thin-skinned, methinks.
'I’m not copying some stupid tutorial from another site like most of the crap on digg."
Hmm, what "crap" is this that he's referring to? Yes, occasionally diggers get sucked into a copied article but for the most part it's caught and doesn't make the front page. Too much whining, no digg, and quit posting to this "crap" site if you don't like it. - kyote, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what's wrong with gotomypc?
- teeemoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wait, VNC is hard to set up? I must be some sort of ultra genius, then.
hee hee....i like the way you think..... - pyroh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0or why not ultravnc (http://uvnc.com) with the ARC4 DSM plugin that encrypts the connection?
no digg since hamachi is "free", except you have to pay for it. - fhportal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0openvpn and tightvnc is the way I go...
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Radmin is so much better than this heep of crap.
http://www.famatech.com/ - valis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Ultimate my ass.

then why'd u asses digg it? - spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0freaking lame... its VNC, it has a freaking help file...
