- diggscape, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Link to US Pirate Party Sites http://www.pirate-party.us/node/370
- Battleloser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Then we shall build a NEW mainstream!
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18It's not important that you win majority, it IS important that you are represented. The Pirate Party is a good step towards being represented for those who believe in Intellectual Property reform and Net Neutrality.
- yargthepirate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18There's something wrong about a Pirate Party in a landlocked state...
- williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Great Salt Lake, arrrr!
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Heh, I thought it was gunna be broad swords and wooden legs at an all night disco, not a *political* party.
- AcePup, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19So you submitted a link a little before me, that's nice. I submit links sometimes 6hrs before you submit the same kind of story on mine. Were friends, friends aren't suppose to care what other friends submit.
- DBrim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12It already exists. You just can't see it.
- lordshank, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yeah, the RIAA is going to love their national conventions.
- zekt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13I'll give it a week. Someone will figure out a way to make it a threat to the national interest of the united states and shut it down.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13If the Pirate Party in Sweden couldnt win majority, what makes you think they will in the US?
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10given the current legal climate in the US it might be safer to start a pedophile party than a pirate party.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9what? Did anyone else understand that?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Queue the sarcastic "hurray for stealing" comments, from people who don't mind being screwed over.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8You know what, your right. Theft is theft. The dilemma comes when you buy a CD, and you get robbed. So which robbery is more moral? You downloading music and stealing from the record companies, or the record companies stealing from you? Oh I forgot, the RIAA has lobbies in washington that make sure the law is structured around them, so they are more moral.
"We're certainly at low ebb when the highest calling of young energetic minds isn't how can we bring peace to the world, or how can we end poverty, rather it is "how can I get more free stuff?" They should all be ashamed of themselves."
Becuase calling for real anti trust laws is a shameful practice. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Unfortunately, the US isn't a socialist utopia like Sweden, and even people who might support these guys have more important political issues to worry about.
- jgclark123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Two comments up, you were just a little too slow, and too slow means no ninja party for you. They have a thing for speed.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7No.
- killdashnine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6More like Buccaneer party, unless ye be at sea.
- ktetch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The loss of a potential sale is theft? So, how many stores get sued for selling out of something - thats the loss of a potential sale, or charging too much - thats the loss of a potential sale, or not stocking the item int he first place - thats the loss of a potential sale. If yo're going to make up your own definitiions, at least think them through. Theft is the removal of an object from an entity, thus depriving the owner of the utilisation of that object.
Oh, few other points, Despite the name, intellectual property isn't property, and so can't be theft. Name is a bit misleading, but go read the laws, or even the formation charter of the WIPO. Secondly, you don't technically 'own' those DVDs you've got. You can't sell them on easily, and there are plenty of recent precidents to enforce this. DRM tracks are even worse. You can't even resell songs you've 'bought' on iTunes, or exercise any of your fair use rights. If they were property (and thus subject to the theft claim) then they'd also have to be resellable, and be capable of fair use. They can't have it both ways.
Thank you though, because you've proved exactly why groups like the pirate party exist - because other groups have been peddling crap and lies as 'truth and fact' for too long. BTW - I for one am still waiting for the MPAA to release the methodolog, or any determinative facts for that LEK study they did a year or so ago, which has the basis for all these claims in recent times. Even other 'anti-piracy groups' has called the studies useless. - ktetch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7And yet again, someone things this is about 'getting free stuff' - its not. They say it themselves, in the press release (or did you not bother to look at it
"About the Pirate Party of the US
The Pirate Party of the US was established in July 2006. The basic idea of the Pirate Party is simple - the government
should encourage, rather than smother, creativity and freedom. The Pirate Party of the US does not support nor condone
any unlawful distribution of copyrighted works."
It's incredible how many people think 'its about downloading stuff for free'. No, its about your rights, or rather the rights you use to have, and should have. Your very comment illustrates perfectly why such a party is needed. Want an example of what's wrong? The song happy birthday, I'm sure you know it. It's under copyright. will be until 2019. (In fact, no copyright will expire in the next ten years in the US) Whats the big deal? Well, it was written in 1896, and the women that wrote it, weren't even the ones that copyrighted it, their sister did, in 1930. Just who's getting stuff off other people's effort there? (to the tune of $4Million a year) - dacheetah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6We shall drop rocks in the mainstream until it forms a dam. Or maybe the problem is it has already become a dam, and we need to tear it down.
- ffleming, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The market will take care of it (when large corporations hire agencies to harass and detain citizens).
- MercedRocks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Amen on the "blogspam" and amen on being friends Acer bro..........just wish there was an IM feature here instead of this public banter.....
- jdryyz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That's the first thing I thought of when I read "pirate" and "Utah" in the same headline. :)
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I can see it now. Police raid convention to get every member's identity so they can later issue everyone subpoenas.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I like your enthusiasm.
- CDoug03, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Screw you guys, I am starting my own Ninja Party!
- dtrinh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4A week or two ago, I heard Rick Falkvinge (founder of the Piratpartiet) speak at the Stanford Law School. He presented a very interesting point: Sweden, and Europe for that matter, is a better place to get a global platform of open media rolling than the United States. Think about it: enough global leverage is held between Europe and China to successfully push global reform on the United States. Infact, it's unlikely the U.S. will ever enact any legislation towards that platform on its own accord - only an overwhelmingly dominant global pressure to really accept open media would ever get Congress on the bandwagon.
- ffleming, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Somehow I don't think a serious campaign for IP and Net Neutrality would call itself the Pirate Party. Similarly, pro-marijuana-legalization do not call themselves the Democratic Alliance for Nugs and Kindness (DANK) or the 420 Pothead Smoke Weed Every Day Initiative.
- takeda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Actually it should. If there's a group of people who think the copyright laws are unjust the party should be formed and represent them.
That's how democracy works... We (citizens) supposed to decide about laws, not some businesses.
If you don't agree, I guess democracy is not for you. - Alucard010, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yar! A Great Salt Lake!
- takeda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They need to create PAC and hire lobbysts and we're set :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8It has less to do with 'who' submitted 'what' first, and more to do with who submitted the story with a direct link to the site... not promoting blogspam.
Bring on the burying (or as some of you 'less educated' people would say "the digging down"). - dacheetah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Theft IS theft. The thing is, Piracy is NOT THEFT! It's copyright infringement, which while still illegal, is a different offence to theft. Bootlegging (selling pirated material) is another offence again.
Calling piracy theft is like saying that punching someone in the face and walking away is a hit and run, and filing it alongside other vehicular manslaughter cases. - Hayaemsay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They might just get a float, you never know.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's probably just a smoke screen for the RIAA to track down real pirates. Remember, you can't trust any group in America who says they represent your best interests.
- afruff23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Call me a tard or whatever, but running with your main platform as technology is dumb. There are way more pertinent and important issues like war, education, wiretapping, etc.
- ZWarren69, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13This is awesome. Be wary Pirate Party, now you must battle with the Neo-Con Mormons, of Utah.
- Daedalus17, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I doubt winning the majority is their goal. The Socialist Party never achieved a majority but parts of their platform were adopted by both the Democrats and Republicans. I think the Pirate Party has similar results in mind.
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It went well in Sweden. They where in media, on tv debates. I feel they where taken seriously
- jwigum, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm confused as to why they didn't start in New Hampshire...
Utah isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think of wenching and beer swilling - MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes
- ktetch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes, because god forbid you actually look at which site the announcement was made on - was it the Pirate Party of the US? Could it be that The Pirate Party of Utah is the state party for that National Party? Whoa - you should steer clear of slashdot - its just making you look like a jackass. try some real research
- GhostFreeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And judging from recent comments by Norris, I wouldn't idolize him in your political party.
- omjeremy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Arrrr... Fed up with Republican/Democrat bi-partisanship? JOIN THE US PIRATE PARTY!
- takeda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why dugg down? I would vote for them ;)))
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't the pirate way be to hack the TV stations to air your own content?
- straxus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5If piracy = theft...
and theft is a criminal offense...
why then, is "piracy" only a civil matter?
The answer is, piracy != theft, no matter how much you insist that it is. Also, bringing peace to the world starts with being fair and kind. It is not kind to ruin the lives of our bright young people by enforcing our draconian copyright laws. I don't believe in the complete abolition of copyright laws personally, but the pendulum has swung *way* too far in the direction of rights holders. We need extremists, because they help us find the middle ground. -
