- wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15This is a very good idea it should be incorporated by all thumb drives.
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Picture debit cards that visually update your balance upon each use.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8there was a drive ages ago that could do the same thing, but that flopped
edit: i did some searching and found many drives that have done this in the past

http://www.laptopshop.co.uk/a_data-bc2_2_gb-usb_firewire-4-uf2.htm - TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yes, I really need this in my smaller drive, sometimes I forget to clear it before I try and save some school work on it.
- snoble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What's supposed to be unique about this is the fact that it is using e-paper technology which means it doesn't have to keep a charge or use a battery. You're right the feature really isn't new, just the tech that's delivering it. I think the hope is the smaller form factor and the lack of a battery will make the feature more attractive. Personally I doubt I could possibly care less than I do about this feature.
- svidrod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8a little more practical than the one that inflated itself.
but still, i don't see myself needing this feature, and i don't really see what people would need it for. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I dont
- Orbatos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is actually a human usability upgrade, not bright blue lights.
- purpleplatyduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I own the 1 gig model, and absolutely love it. I purchased it on clearance at Walmart for $60...Apparently they weren't selling well. You can get them cheap online too...I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for a good high-end USB drive
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Now all we need is a jumpdrive with e-paper and liquid metal and any other useless but cool technology we can fit in.
- Burgerman851, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Has Lexar patented this idea yet?
*Runs off to file patent and sue the pants off Lexar* - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3if you read through several of the articles i posted, a few of them are also using technology without use of a battery... (and i just realised i also posted a link to the ces article about this drive... oops)
anyways i couldnt really care.... if i wanted to know how much space is left, i would plug into the usb slot on my compter - yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no what would be nice is if they did that with gift cards instead of printing the remaining balance on the receipt
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is really nice. I'd also like to see portable USB laptop hard drive enclosures with a small listing of what's on the root of the drive. And IMHO the ultimate use of e-Ink/OLEDs would be a keyboard that can dynamically change the glyphs on the keys. One keyboard suitable for all locales, plus in games you could show the action buttons graphically.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just saw it on clearance at my walmart last night.
- Orbatos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3to see if it's full?
- ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2CompUSA has sold one that does that for about a year and a half already.
- s7r1k3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You gotta start somewhere. Eventually these prices will come down
- WiteNoiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apart from your daft question at the end, the balance on phone cards and the like would be a damned good use of this technology.
e-paper and e-ink are going to cause a wave of new ideas (gimmicky and otherwise).
Infrequently updated displays are everywhere. The clock displays, for example, could be e-ink, since they only update once a minute - saving battery/power. - neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1holy crap, thanks for the link! O_O
- usefulmoose, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4cache here: http://duggmirror.googlepages.com/cache.html?1974512&technology/USB_Drive_Shows_Space_Used_on_Side_of_Drive
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It costs $80 for a 1GB version? On newegg they sell 1GB thumbdrives for $20. So you're paying $60 so that you can read how much space is used on the outside. Cool feature, but not worth quadrupling the price.
- Orbatos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This thing is cool, but "first being announced" is untrue, it was demoed almost 6 months ago.
- flypcide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the article:
"Street price puts the one gig version at $50 USD, and the deuce at $80." - Damion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The more I Buy products of this nature the more I notice how the "Less thans" rely on gimmicks to get products sold. Lexar being one of them. Jump Drives don't work like plane Flash memory right? I mean it can tell you your full before you try to write to it right?
- ElectroBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would you really want the cashier at your local grocery store knowing your debit or credit card balance?
- Turkwoyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool use of the Epaper stuff, would be cool to see that used in other tech
- darkshard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ok, perhaps this would be cool on things that are totally throw away, like a crap 7-11 phone card. Otherwise, humans are pretty savvy about knowing how full or empty things are. Especially, since filling a usb drive requires user intervention.
And another thing, if this is a digital paper product, where the hell is the digital paper ? - madmathmatician, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1jeez japan has had jumpdrives with this for ages, in fact i have one right now!
- WiteNoiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Cool idea. Can't wait for someone to think of that (http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/)
;) - darkshard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why would you want to publicize that info to the world, huh? You know your balance right now without it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1its nice, i preferd the infatble one. even though it was impractical, but the technolgy that is going to be used is really cool. i think that is going to play a large part in up and coming products.
http://www.i-o-n.blogspot.com - mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Can someone spell gimmick?
- darkshard, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Super boring feature, for dumbasses. Whoop dee doo, a blinky!
