- MacBookForMe, on 09/17/2008, -1/+20Finally! It took them eternity to react...so many young people were seduced into web nets of suicidal thoughts...
- inactive, on 09/17/2008, -1/+17I thought they were already illegal... guess I was wrong.
- T00NY, on 09/17/2008, -3/+16I'm no fan of censorship, but these websites should be wiped from the search engines, I'm sure Google could manage it.
- stephhicks68, on 09/17/2008, -1/+11How terrible! These types of sites remind me of the Pro-Anorexia sites too. I cannot believe that people encourage each other in this regard.
- albyliontk, on 09/17/2008, -2/+11I am glad to see that the UK Government is taking the lead in regulating these appalling websites. These people are looking for help in desperate times, not to be encouraged to consider taking their own life.
- pinkpackrat, on 09/17/2008, -1/+9How very sad-- there has been a rise in suicide by healthy, young people worldwide. I'm glad to see a move by the UK government to put a stop to websites that encourage this trend. These kids need help for depression not encouragement in suicidal thoughts. The idea that Suicide Websites even exist is shocking.
- ScottMcIntyre, on 09/17/2008, -0/+8Personally, I wasn't aware such websites existed. I can't believe people actually profit out of this kind of utter distress.
- MacBookForMe, on 09/17/2008, -0/+7Google could manage, governmental intelligence/security agencies could manage, but there were no real interest about that.
- MacBookForMe, on 09/17/2008, -0/+7Maybe they were illegal officially, but nobody was enforcing the law...
- pinkpackrat, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6Anoriexia is just suicide on the installment plan!
- thejockjimmy, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6At Long Last common sense finally shines through....jimmy
- MacBookForMe, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6Media and public revolt forced them to react.
- Roryking, on 09/18/2008, -2/+8I was about to say something about the First Amendment, but then I saw it was in the U.K.
...carry on, citizens. Nanny Government will take care of you. - itisme1760, on 09/18/2008, -0/+61800-Suicide-Anonymous
- diggic, on 09/18/2008, -0/+6And YES they should Damn do it!!!
- MacBookForMe, on 09/17/2008, -0/+5I noticed their existence, when many young people in Britain started to commit suicide which were connected to web site preparations and rituals...how very sad!
- ippey, on 09/17/2008, -0/+5I would like to see one of these "suicide sites" to find out what is so appalling about their existence. Not saying that suicide is good or anything, but there are perfectly legitimate reasons for someone to want to kill themselves (ie- people on life support who don't have long to live anyway).
- M4tchstickM4n, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4I am against all forms of censorship. If I want to find out the best way to kill myself, I believe I have that right. It is my life, I own it.
Laws like this could also lead to abuse.
example : Someone uploads a torrent/document to The Pirate Bay/Wikileaks that promotes suicide, the UK government will be able to make that site illegal. - inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4This news is so sad...so very, very sad.
I've lost the will to live.
Oh look, another story about Palin on digg, nevermind. - ScottMcIntyre, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4As an additional piece of information, for those based in the UK, the Samaritans provides "confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide." Telephone: UK: 08457 90 90 90
- pinkpackrat, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4It's one thing for someone on life support or with terminal cancer to contemplate taking their own life, but as I understand it these suicide websites are aimed at young healthy people who are just depressed and who need help, not an instruction manual.
- amyjane1, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3It is very sad and shocking. I had no idea that they even existed...as a parent, this is a real eye opener for me.
- the1truelegend, on 09/18/2008, -1/+4@Roryking - I was thinking the same thing at first about the First Amendment.
Still though, why would somebody want to promote suicide? - M4tchstickM4n, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2and in addition to the above comment, I saw a documentary on the BBC, It showed the best way to kill yourself Humanely. So I assume this documentary would be illegal?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7183957.stm - psud0, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2Are social bookmarking sites suicidal? :D
- ippey, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1And I can understand that perfectly; what I don't get is the motive for people to assist depressed teens end their life. Are they part of some cultist group that is just wacked in the head, or is it just people trying to be funny by having others off themselves?
Really, I'm just wondering what their motivations are; but I also want to be sure that, for example, I tell someone that angers me to go jump off a bridge and post that in a blog, that the blog wouldn't be considered a suicide site. Additionally, who makes the call to whether it is or it isn't? - DforSpiD, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Some suicide pages should never be removed:

"Headbutt the sidewalk:
Manliness: 10 Style: 3 Awesomeness: 10 Mess: 4
What you need: a sidewalk.
How to do it:
Step 1: Slam your head into the sidewalk.
Step 2: Repeat." - inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Censorship.
- highlymodified, on 09/18/2008, -1/+1I'm torn, to be honest.
I support nothing that makes expression of certain ideas illegal, no matter how ***** they are...but at the same time, this could deprive vulnerable people of their lives.
So, Digg...how to reconcile this dilemma? Armchair-legislators, ACTIVATE!
