- bensussman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This is a great idea and I like what UC Berkeley is doing in terms of embracing the nature of Youtube while still keeping it clean and professional. I am actually a UC Berkeley student at the moment, and I was a little disappointed to see NO Computer Science classes on the Youtube channel. Never fear:
http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses.php is alive and well, and i would suggest ANY 61 class to everyone because they rule. I am currently taking 162 with Kubi, so check that out if you're into systems programming. =) - marlinman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Oh I don't know... maybe because you are into learning for its own sake??? I'd enjoy school far more if it wasn't filled with people like you...
- suxmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9And it's about damned time too!
- DomZy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The University I am in, Cardiff University, one of my lecturers last year used to post video podcasts which summarized lectures and gave examination tips etc. I think more lecturers should do stuff like this.
- escortez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This has been done by MIT for a while now (videos, not necessarily on youtube). http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/courses/av/index.htm
- GSnake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is great news, finally learning can be done not because it's a requirement, but because it's an interest.
I can already see websites signing partnerships with some schools to host whole courses via video lectures for a monthly fee (say $19.99/month). You would have access to the video lectures, message boards for fellow students/professors of the course, downloadable resources (assignment sheets, syllabus, course outlines), and then have a certified online exam. You could pass through courses, get the same value as a 'normal' student, and eventually progress into attaining a degree. It would be cheaper, faster, and allow each student to work at their own pace, in their own working environment.
IMO, this is the future of post-secondary education, giving the student the options. I really hope someone jumps onto this and it snowballs, going to a university is fun if you're a freshman, but unless you live on campus (which sucks), having to make your way to school everyday can get annoying/costly.
This education model might be still someways down the road, but hosting full lectures, for free, on the internet is a fairly large step in the right direction. - UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Great, now I can learn integrative biology for free. Thanks YouTube!
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Digg this up if you go to Cal. GO BEARS!
- bioskope, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4oh there goes Kenobi on his anti MS rant again. Hey lets take it the entire distance then. Blame Bush somehow or the other while you're at it. Stick to the ***** topic for once dude
- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's safe to say you wouldn't do very well in University with that attitude anyway.
- marv1983, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Hopefully there will be some MBA lectures up there soon
- Nichiren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't know why he got dugg down. Listening to a podcast on data structures right now. Hope they have computer science lectures on youtube soon as well.
- brjndr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As a Cal alum I must inform you, it's spelled Stanfurd.
- CodyZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Go Bears!
- dukeochutney, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2prof: you haven't been to class in 2 weeks
student: i was watching on youtube - bordicon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Kubi is ***** rad. Got a couple friends taking that class. This semester has some dynamite profs lecturing :D O'Brian for 184 for the win
- bordicon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At least you don't get ur ass raped with midterms/projects/finals by watching these vids. Trust me, I wish computer science department gave me some ky during my first semester there.
- Hefeweissen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow, this is great! Dugg! I know there are a lot of video lectures already available on other university websites, but sometimes it's hard to find them. This helps a lot and may be even will motivate others to do the same.
- GeneralKickass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What? He's ***** right.
- GeneralKickass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dude what's with all the anti-Cal comments? You have some serious problems man. Have you tried getting professional help?
- Rosy720, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Go Bears! BS Chem '04 PhD Biophysics '10
- JohnnyRad, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1now i can learn the stuff i slept through in college! this is awesome
- joeysum, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This shows how much a Berkeley education is worth. And FYI: I'm an '05 engineering Cal grad :P
- geddon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Take Microsoft as a metaphor for American business practices and you'll understand what the Bolivarian Revolution is all about!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolivarian_Revolution - orca94, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Give the Cal kiddies a break. Not everyone can learn to read, they saw the old article they just didn't know what they were looking at.
- mycguo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is great! Hope they offer some software engineering couses soon!
- jcbradley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The big problem with YouTube is the 10 min limitation. Did they have to get a special account to post their hour long lectures? I have had my lectures on iTunes for a while and wished I could do the same on YouTube.
- msodrew, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1So you were in a frat... only the frats wear those shirts.
- realchemist, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3I dugg this planning on coming back to maybe check out a few lectures, possibly learning something new, but I probably won't.
- OpticalLiam, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Don't lecture me bro!
- orca94, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The same could be said for all the Anti-Stanford comments made by Cal people. So no, I don't need professional help. It's called a ***** rivalry retard.
- orca94, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0***** yo school, and ***** yo couch. ***** Cal.
- orca94, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I knew you Cal guys couldn't spell for *****. What are they teaching you at that hell hole?
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2They are hardly the first to post videos of lectures. They may be the first to use youtube though.
- orca94, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0What a shame that they had to be lectures from those rejects across the bay. Oh well, I guess they still have football. Oh wait... They're still losing the overall tally. It's ok, don't cry.
- orca94, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0***** Cal.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -11/+8I'm more impressed with what Youtube is doing than the lectures themselves. You see, this is a great business model. Youtube isn't ***** with anyone or stabbing other companies in the back.
Imagine if Microsoft had been Youtube, they would have forced everyone to install Windows, IE and WMP, sign up for MS Passport (your papers please! (German accent)), and probably pay a fee on top of it.
Youtube/Google, and numerous other startups (even Digg) have proven that you don't have to be an evil menace to succeed. - LaueOfficer, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2This was already on the main page tonight. And Berkeley isn't the first school to do it. And the other article had better links. Come on guys...sheesh
- spankaccount, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Cal State Berzerkeley. No thanks.
