- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37guy's these things are planned far in advance.
And I've known about this excercise for months now.
Here's some excellent pictures and more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valiant_Shield - szelij, on 10/12/2007, -32/+65Okay it's like this. North Korea is waving its missile around and the US gets pissed...so it brings out its cruisers and ships and planes too and waves THAT around.
Kind of like a competition on who has the biggest... - swimshaun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36are you serious? it's not like three aircraft carriers woke up one day and said "you know, these DPRK guys are getting on my nerves, let's all meet in the pacific and do some war games, that'll teach 'em"... "hey ensign, call up the pacific fleet, tell them we'll do some war games and then have a bbq on my ship" This stuff is resourced, planned and coordinated a year or more in advance. Put down the tin foil and step away slowly.
- jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36You might get LOST.
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29and the occasional speed hack :D
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26It's not a valid comparison at all. It was feared that the US Naval blocade of Cuba would result in a direct confrontation with the Soviet ships and subs that were heading toward Cuba.
There is no blocade going on of North Korea and their navy is almost non-existent anyway. This is merely a wargame nowhere near North Korea that was planned months in advance. - richsipe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Big F-in missle or Billions of floating circuit boards connected to lots of smaller F-in missles
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Would you like to play a game?
- angiela, on 10/12/2007, -10/+26Did Matthew Broderick teach us nothing?
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Why isn't the Pacific a good place for a leisurely sail? It's a pretty big ass ocean ocean.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22The irony, of course, is in the root of the word Pacific. Seems it's not such a peaceful place after all.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18He had a bad run in with Hans Brix. Naturally he's trying to work off some of that frustration.
Also: He's stolen Elton John's glasses and doesn't want to give them back. - shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -21/+36dugg down why? During the Cuban Missile crisis one of the escalating factors was the presence of US military/Navy who was doing pre-scheduled exercises in the Gulf Region at the time which was then put to use in forming the blockade/quarantine of Cuba.
- amonthei, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30Yes, years in advance.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Tax dollars being "wasted" on keeping our military trained and ready.
I have an idea!!! Lets just get rid of our military. Then it will rain flowers and everybody will be happy and Osama will marry into Bush's family and they'll be best of friends. Kim Jong will go on to his original dream of being a ballerina...
shut the hell up, please. - ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I can't wait till Digg is for everything, then it will do away with these "Why is this on digg" trolls.
- Triffid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If you'd RTFA, you'd realize this operation has been planned for months... not just since the North Korean missle problem.
- abenton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Absolutely ridiculous. So i take it more people who post these negative comments are more supportive of NK than of the US? Interesting.. all this America bashing is catching on, and it's funny to me, to see the entire world bend over backwards to hate us, and then rely on us every step of the way, ie. the UN, peace keeping around the world, humanitarian relief... shall I go on?
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16You must be new here.
- sailor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"During the Cuban Missile crisis one of the escalating factors was the presence of US military/Navy who was doing pre-scheduled exercises in the Gulf Region at the time which was then put to use in forming the blockade/quarantine of Cuba."
The escalating factor was that Russia was shipping missles to Cuba, missles that could easily reach the US.
Where did you brats go to school? - bjsiders, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Squeaky wheel syndrome. Iran makes noise with nukes and suddenly America will re-open formal relations with them and offer them MORE nuclear technology. North Korea already got a deal like this once out of President Clinton, and it looks like President Bush is along those same lines, so KJI is going to rattle his sabre to get some attention.
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14uhh, the US Navy and Air Force are probably the most advanced organizations on the planet. Nice try though.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You will also notice while RingTFA that this is planned again for next year then will happen regularly after that.
- Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://www.pacom.mil/exercises/vs2006/imagery/060618-N-8591H-383-h.jpg
higher res of above photo - bjsiders, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12All right then. Here you go. Pictures you won't find the media. :)

Look at what Bill Clinton agreed to give North Korea in the 1994 "Agreed Framework": nuclear reactors, food, oil, etc. North Korea is a failed nation whose only export is blackmail and whose only import is foreign aid. As bjsiders said, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agreed_Framework - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Problem is they do it with such finesse you can never prove it was them or that they were even there.
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"where are you getting your facts on North Korea?
per globalsecurity.org, here's a rough look at North Korea's Navy, it is definitely not 'almost non-existant'."
If you actually read the link you provide, you'll notice that North Korea has about 26 obsolete soviet-era diesel-electric submarines, 71 unarmed diesel-electric submersibles, 6 corvettes, 46 missile craft (probably the most dangerous of their arsenal), 103 torpedo craft, 158 patrol craft, and a bunch of amphibious landers.
Now, according to your link, they don't have any aircraft carriers listed. Somehow, I think the 280+ aircraft that are participating in this exersize combined with the rest of the 3 carrier battle groups will be just fine if things get sour. - Phaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This has nothing to do with Korea. As someone else stated above, these exercises are planned well in advance and are not staged in reaction to things like fueling a missile. If anything, this is more to impress the Chinese, who have steadily been stationing more and more missiles and aircraft across the straits from Taiwan. The Chinese were even allowed to come aboard the Lincoln and observe flight operations for a while a couple of days ago.
In any case, any of the potential war scenarios in the Pacific region would definitely require coordinated use of multiple aircraft carriers and lots of land-based airplanes, which is what this exercise is intended to train for. Train like you fight, fight like you train. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If it is a competition of the "biggest" the Korea's could do better by not naming their missiles, "no dong"
yeah i know the missile sports a different name, but the warheads on it are still no dong clusters. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Pakistan and India are not at war.
Iran is (currently) not at war.
NK is at war (though on a cease fire for a long time) and tests their missiles by firing over another soveriegn nation instead of straight out to sea.
Entirely different situation. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not even remotely the same thing. America is not banned from testing missiles, NK is. Read the comments before you repost stupid statements.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah you wantch the ***** hit the fan if they used a war game to invade. Give it a rest we have been doing execrises in the Pacific for years.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Its planned in advance.
Nothing to do with NK.
Your tin hat is crooked. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its because he's so ronrey.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8We tried bi-lateral talks with North Korea already. Clinton gave them everything from free oil to nuclear reactors in the 1994 Agreed Framework. He even sent Secretary of State Madeleine Albright over in 2000. What did it get us? The North Koreans enriched uranium for a weapons program behind our backs!

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/features/jan-june03/nkorea.html - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Great all we need, another rogue nation with the ability to bomb our allies and our people.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6comments like that show your ignorance about previous conflicts...
- Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6These are biennial exercises that have been going on since at least post-WWII. Why *you* hadn't heard about it before is anyone's guess.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7swimshaun, that would be funny as hell if that was the case, tho.
- Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14You got dugg down because you're wrong, Shaun. While it sounds like you know some of the history of the Cuban Missle Crisis, I don't think you know enough about these current exercises and just posted a knee jerk reaction. That's why.
- amonthei, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yeah, I almost thought this was a duplicate.
BTW - This is definitely not a display in response to N. Korea. Read the story, the timing is purely coincidental. Although I do have to say that it works out pretty well and I think it's freakin' awesome especially since China, Japan and S. Korea were invited to attend and participate. - abenton, on 10/12/2007, -43/+48They plan these things years in advance, but way to try to be the next US hater, but you failed miserably. And just for the record, if anything I think N. Korea did their missle thing just to overcast our military war games. Oh well, god bless the USA
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now this is what I call a well set up LARP.
- MooseFruit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That is an incredible photo, especially with the bombers at the top and 3 aircraft carriers. Awesome.
- shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -69/+73Cuban Missile crisis here we come
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Greetings, Professor Falken.
- abenton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@deadbaby, and by attacking Japan, they might as well have attacked us, Japan are our homeboys, nah mean? No but seriously, that would be the end of NK, because I guarantee we'd help Japan, the japanese would have no problem retaliating and taking some of the stress out of their area of the world.
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And they do this because it's cheaper than bothering Chuck Norris ... and safer.
