- Skelly11, on 07/29/2008, -1/+28¬_¬ my god, according to some news sources when the police here (Middlesbrough) got the servers and did the initial interview, OiNK Admin, Alan Ellis laughed through the interview, these people do not know what they are talking about or what they are dealing with.
- kirado4, on 07/30/2008, -0/+19so how many times can you get your bail date extended before it becomes illegal.. oh wait it's not about following the law.. only copyright infringement law..
- AngelBunny, on 07/30/2008, -3/+18the database on the server was hosted on the RAM, not the hdd, so any evidence they might have against the alleged uploaders is going to be weak. they probably just had a user account on oink, clicked to download a torrent or two, looked at the IP address of the seeder and then traced it to the registered owner of that IP based on the ISPs logs. The problem with this is anyone can spoof on a network so if a gov agency asked my ISP who my IP belongs to they might report someone in another state. I don't like putting blame on others so mine would come up as just unregistered, but I could do that if I wanted to. In other words, just by having an internet connection you could be blamed for something like this.

- austinnowlin, on 07/29/2008, -1/+11First the FCC ruling against Comcast then this?
Excellent. - iJessicaRabbit, on 07/30/2008, -1/+10This is great news; ever since 10.23 I've been worried. I hope the other 4 will be let go as well.
- Spuy767, on 07/30/2008, -0/+8Thanks for being, apparently, the only other person to realize that the goodness of two people going free is not even close to on par with the breach of justice that Alan is enduring.
- eloestea, on 07/30/2008, -0/+6Thanks for the uploads!
- jamie191817, on 07/30/2008, -0/+6sounds like a good job to apply for, these pseudo police investigators. anyone know how i would go about joining these people, I'm in england.
- championchap, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5Wait.. I'm sorry. Database administration isn't something I'm very into.
But isnt hosting a database in RAM sort of.. irrisponsible?
Powercut = Database gone! - stevo9er, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6How can you call Jay-Z not being able to afford his 9th hummer harmful? Or what about Bono not being able to afford to fly his other 200 favorite hats first class?
- ReverendRodger, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6Is it just me or is that a ridiculous amount of time to spend in jail over a bunch of 1s and 0s that didn't harm anyone?
- Sihing, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4Yeah, something about that sounds pretty fishy. I highly doubt an entire database of users is loaded into something so volatile. I could see the database being encrypted on the drive though with like a 256 bit encryption or higher etc.
Other than that though... I'm not networking guru or anything. But I've never heard of IP spoofing under an ISP unless you're going through a proxy. The thing is you can spoof your MAC address no problem, but you'll still have the same IP address your ISP leased to you via DHCP.. and that RARELY changes. I know in DDoS attacks you spoof IP's to overload a server with three way handshakes etc. but I've never heard of masking your IP on the header of packets incoming and outgoing... how would the packets know to navigate to YOUR computer? It's not like it's NAT protocol or anything... If you have anything to enlighten me with, please do. Send me a shout or something. - kooftspc, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4its easy...go to a mcdonalds and fill out an application
- championchap, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4Never Forget. 23/10/07.
- Spuy767, on 07/30/2008, -0/+3The fact that they keep pushing back the bail date for a music enthusiast, yet expedite far more dangerous criminals through the system is NOT good news.
- anachronaut, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2That's a very valid point and it's a shame that you're being dugg down for stating it. Let's hope that doesn't turn out to be the case, though.
- ortucis, on 07/30/2008, -1/+2Why? They aired Friends again or something that day?
- AngelBunny, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1hosted on sdram for 1) speed related issues and 2) for security. if there is a server raid, like what happened, then the user DB is lost.
of course, there are backups, but they are in other locations, and are hidden. I doubt any gov agency obtained them. OiNK actually said something about the user DB being gone so it sounds like someone close to him heard the news and deleted the DB himself. also, there usually is a custom shutdown command that copies the DB to the HDD then shuts down, reboots, and loads it right backup. This command is only known to the admin though, so if they try to shut the computers down and not just pull the plug, the DB will not be saved. It is convenient if a reboot or something is needed, but not convenient if the server crashes. This is why when that happens most higher end private torrent sites take a couple of days to get it back up and running. Also, the database server is separate from the web site hosting server and there usually is a 3rd squid server on bigger sites.
I don't know OiNK or anything so what I am saying is obviously speculation, but I have worked closely with staff on higher end private bt sites in the past, so I know the routine generally quite well. - jamie191817, on 07/30/2008, -1/+1i was actually being serious, i'm on the dole and looking for some work.
- soupcancooloff, on 07/30/2008, -6/+5This may not be good news. These two uploaders may have rolled on the others if they had any information about other uploaders or the server admins. Incriminating emails and such.
