- xdeliriumx, on 05/22/2008, -12/+201I would think they should be more concerned about Ariel filing a lawsuit against them, especially if (god forbid) it escalated to something worse, rather than what a banned user might do. They are the ones refusing to uphold their own TOS. She has a much stronger case than does the abuser.
- urothane, on 05/22/2008, -17/+182Add this to the fact that Twitter can't stay up and I don't see much of a reason to use it anymore.
- Quenlin, on 05/22/2008, -3/+143Since when could you get sued by banning someone from your site?
- Skaldjur, on 05/22/2008, -26/+157That's just plain wrong. Dugg.
- nubtard, on 05/22/2008, -11/+124Jack did jack *****.
- bluesatin, on 05/22/2008, -4/+95That's what she said.
- Glowbird, on 05/22/2008, -13/+91Utterly unacceptable. Don't know how our community can act against it, but I'll sure contribute a righteous Digg and pass the link.
- dkitch, on 05/22/2008, -21/+75Wait, someone said mean things about someone else on the internet? Whoah, whoah, stop the presses!!!
- sninky-chan, on 05/22/2008, -4/+43If Ariel is telling the truth, it doesn't matter whether she's community manager of Pownce. This is a simple matter of upholding your own Terms of Service. (If she is making this up, that really sucks.)
- sheebz, on 05/22/2008, -22/+59***** THING SUCKS
- dwightfagen, on 05/22/2008, -5/+39if the way she described the posts is accurate and twitter says they aren't harassing messages, then what DO they consider to be harassment? that seems to be the question to ask. maybe they should post some examples or definitions in their FAQ. come on, guys.
- EvilDoer, on 05/22/2008, -36/+66She got bit in the ass by the very same technology she uses to attention whore with? Walk it off.
- trammell, on 05/22/2008, -1/+31Ariel has updated her post:
"Update 2: This is already disclosed in the about section of this blog already, but I am stating it again here at the request of others: I am the community manager for Pownce, however, this issue started before I was working at Pownce. The opinions stated here do not reflect my clients/employers and I did *not* write this in the interest of them. It is well known that I am not a Twitter-hater (much the opposite)." - shelbygt33, on 05/22/2008, -0/+29I would have to agree - they are worried about "harasser" boy suing them - wouldn't Ariel have the stronger case?
And they own their site, no? Can't they delete whatever the heck they want? I won't even begin to estimate how many times I've had my posts deleted :) - fracktica, on 05/22/2008, -15/+42Interesting - she's the community manager for Pownce.
http://arielwaldman.com/about/ - reuscel, on 05/22/2008, -10/+33There is no reason for anyone to use Twitter ever.
- KableKiB, on 05/22/2008, -1/+23Yeah, it's your site do whatever you want with it.
- toonworld, on 05/22/2008, -14/+34so umm... is it just the one person who is harassing her? I know I'll get dugg down for this, but I gotta ask: what did she do to get all this attention? I'm betting the harassment continues because she gave it so much attention for so long.
- tibbon, on 05/22/2008, -16/+36Umm. Twitter HAS banned abusive users. Some of them such as foulbastard were reinstated after hundreds of users asked that they reinstate them. I believe TheBreastsOfTwitter were banned as well.
To Digg users: Figure out if you want things to be censored or not. Every other Digg article is about some big company censoring/banning someone for whatever reason. This article could have just as easily been "Omg, Twitter is censoring me for being a douchebag" and you'd have all clamored for free speech.
I'm against harassment as much as anyone, but you can ignore users. Being prominent in social media or anywhere online will potentially draw the weirdos out of the woodwork. Learn to ignore them.
Maybe she'll stop being such a queen on twitter and not following people back. 304/3602 ratio is a little off. I try to keep near 1:1 as long as it's not spammers/bots following me.
twitter.com/tibbon - tibbon, on 05/22/2008, -8/+28Sue Twitter for what? For someone bothering her? Maybe I'll sue the City of Cambridge for the fact that homeless people talk ***** when I walk by.
- MuskokasFinest, on 05/22/2008, -1/+20Lawsuits in the U.S. have been won for a lot less...
- DrKillJoy, on 05/22/2008, -6/+25Not taking a stand for your community members is just crap, whether it's Ariel or just some nobody user Twitter should stand behind there own TOS! Besides a lawsuit isn't going to give Twitter anymore down time than it already has..........................
- tibbon, on 05/22/2008, -2/+19So if a company bans/censors something offensive they are bad.... or rather they are good. Diggers can't make up their mind. Hmm, if Best Buy or MSFT censors, then it's bad... twitter would be good? Make up your freaking minds.
- ultrafez, on 05/22/2008, -1/+16In my opinion, if it's your website you should be able to do whatever the hell you like with it - as long as people aren't paying for a service which they're not getting, which isn't true in this case.
And especially in this situation, how can you sue someone for not providing them with a free service? - orlytehowl, on 05/22/2008, -69/+84What a ***** cry baby. Seriously. Have a look here to see what she's talking about: http://summize.com/search?q=ariel+waldman
Basically, she's crying because someone said, through a service that lets you send anonymous tweets, the following:
"wow, ariel waldman looks like a certifiable crack-whore now"
"congratulations ariel waldman, you've graduated to soft-core lesbian porn!"
"OH: her phone is attached to her vagina (hahahahaha) referring to Ariel Waldman of SF, CA"
Here is the Twitter account: http://twitter.com/confession
Here is the portal that lets you use it: http://kosso.co.uk/twitter/confess/
Here she is, increasingly become a public figure in the Web 2.0 space, and she's whining about how people are saying "mean things" about her. Moreover, it's not really a privacy issue when you use your real, and full name, for EVERYTHING. Don't complain when you use your real name as your user account and then someone says something using your real name.
I'm surprised the amount of comments supporting her. For a site like Digg, anyway, that prides itself on "free speech." She basically wants Twitter to ban anyone who says anything mean about her.
And I'm guessing that her harasser is talking about things like these on her PUBLIC Flickr sets: http://www.flickr.com/photos/arielwaldman/24960968 ... and http://www.flickr.com/photos/arielwaldman/22950423 ... and http://www.flickr.com/photos/arielwaldman/22958355 ...
Don't be surprised if she gets the Digg crew to delete this comment though. She works for Pownce/Digg. - MasterGrief, on 05/22/2008, -4/+18For God's sake, leave politics out of this!
- twofivethreetwo, on 05/22/2008, -8/+22It has to do with her name as her branding. When somebody searches for her name (which is her brand) Google will bring up those results. That is why other places like Flickr will remove that accounts and/or messages. A lot of people use their name (or usernames) as social branding and market themselves through Twitter and this hurts that.
- RBasil, on 05/22/2008, -1/+15Let Twitter know how you feel.
http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/topics/twitter_ ... - dfltr, on 05/22/2008, -0/+13your username made that comment a comedy goldmine ;)
- burkhartmj, on 05/22/2008, -3/+16Considering the person's full name and email are getting posted by the harasser, if this escalates outside of the internet, and people take malicious advantage of the information Ariel never permitted to be publicly displayed, suing Twitter AND the harasser would seem pretty easy actually. Twitter would be liable because of their TOS and the email trail between them and Ariel disclosing the situation and their neglect of it.....at least they should be.
- hello2usir, on 05/22/2008, -2/+15Wait you mean there was ever a reason?
- creepermclurker, on 05/22/2008, -1/+13IMHO, putting up address information is crossing the line.
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -1/+13Because vigilante justice has worked so well for Digg in the past. I remember Digg being in the MSM for encouraging harassment of a woman who "stole" a guy's camera. Turns out that he lied about it and was arrested.
- jdee, on 05/22/2008, -10/+22What would Pownce do in a situation like this?
- jonshipman, on 05/22/2008, -3/+15I guess most of us don't know who ariel is and just assume she's like us.
- titorTT, on 05/22/2008, -1/+12or pownce
- truspect0r, on 05/22/2008, -2/+13Ok now STFU and stop bawwwwing. Oh *****, you want me banned too.
- Kanidia, on 05/22/2008, -5/+16What is Twitter afraid of, really? It's just some random online user. Twitter is way more powerful than to be afraid of a small user suing them.
- R031E5, on 05/22/2008, -5/+15Probably the best expression of my thoughts about Twitter.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25036088@N06/23842936 ... - bronxelf, on 05/22/2008, -1/+11Although I do think that twitter needs to either enforce its TOS or stop pretending to have one, I will note that when you are *encouraging* anonymous "confessions" to a public twitter account it's only a matter of time before this happens. When you take your account out of the public feed and make it friends-only the ***** level drops to nothing. Of course it kills the whole anonymous confession thing, but hey, you can't have everything.
- RebelReform89, on 05/22/2008, -10/+19That's just absolutely ridiculous. Might have to consider removing my Twitter account. We'll have to see...
- truspect0r, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10They would still suck.
- tokyomonster, on 05/22/2008, -5/+14I can see a slight conflict of interest, and it probably should have been disclosed at the beginning of her post, but it doesn't change the fact that it happened..
Now if she had made up any of the communications between her and twitter, then we'd have an issue. - jabelar, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9The TOS requires "a" random bird, but you posted three, so you are now banned.
- whiteknives, on 05/22/2008, -3/+12Grow a pair, Jack Dorsey.
- xdeliriumx, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9How is that a conflict of interest? She can use Twitter if she wants just like Kevin does... does that mean the TOS doesn't apply? No.
- vexingmodstwo, on 05/22/2008, -6/+15Dammit! I saw there was reply and I KNEW someone was going to beat me to this lay up!
- juniorb, on 05/22/2008, -2/+11Tin foil hats are in Aisle 5b.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10My using twitter for woot.com updates and CNN news seems a lot more mature than that comment you just left.
- sq2shooter, on 05/22/2008, -2/+10Unless of course as community manager for a competitor to Twitter, she is just making up this story to make them look bad. The fact that she did not disclose this makes me question her entire story.
