- twiztidsinz, on 01/14/2009, -1/+49Twitter: limiting searches but not password attempts!
- mk455, on 01/13/2009, -6/+26i just want to know why i can't search for people by location.
- Borniet, on 01/14/2009, -2/+20Not really a twitter searcher, so no idea why they would do that... Do people search that much on twitter?
- acmaurer, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12You can - you just have to go to search.twitter.com and do it there - it'll only come up with tweets, not profiles, but it's better than nothing.
- themarq, on 01/14/2009, -3/+15Twitter has limited searches because their user base grew faster than they could handle. Enabling searching would kill the site in a matter if minutes. This is not news, they can't figure out how to build a robust enough infrastructure to manage the functionality.
- nahsrocketeer75, on 01/14/2009, -0/+12Yes, it's good that they're trying to deter abuse. But when those preventative measures get in the way of normal use, it's not a good thing. And, that they've done such a poor job of explaining/publicizing the limits causes unnecessary confusion.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -3/+12perhaps this limits some 'spam bots'? I never used Twitter before, so...
- Anim8tor, on 01/14/2009, -2/+9I wish there were more searchability on twitter, though I can imagine some of the spam darkside as well ...
- mk455, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7never knew about that - thanks!
- BBarash, on 01/14/2009, -2/+9Dugg for "I wonder if my old pal Phil Intheblank is on Twitter."
- sexybobo, on 01/14/2009, -0/+7Starting off with Ruby on Rails was a bad idea.
- bram, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6Twitter needs to be totally re-engineered. It is constantly failing and is slow. This is just another stupid ploy to reduce load and keep it afloat.
The sad thing is we are all hooked and will that I'll keep using it no matter what! - puter, on 01/14/2009, -3/+9Who cares? why is a search limit on twitter front page?
I logged in just so I could digg this down as lame. - meatwaddancin, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6Yeah this used to be possible (exactly what you're asking about, not the search.twitter.com for tweets workaround) but when Twitter removed the people search a while ago and just brought it back recently, that feature didn't come with. I suppose they are just trying to keep the service as decent as they can as it grows so fast. I'm sure that feature will return once again eventually.
- adkenc, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5apparently this guy loves the fail whale.
- rodon, on 01/14/2009, -2/+7I'd have the word "start-up" or "web2.0" in a tweet and the next thing I know, I have 300 new entrepreneurial spambots following me.
- POPULATIONPASTE, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6I know exactly why they limit searches -- It's a rails site and rails is a piece of ***** that couldn't scale for it's life. So anything that can't be easily cached is just limited, like searches.
Don't believe me or think I'm just being a troll? See http://www.radicalbehavior.com/5-question-intervie ... - MWeather, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4Wouldn't adding a "make my profile/tweets private" check box have worked just as well without eliminating any functionality?
- Grazfather, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5Because their servers are under ENOUGH load?
- ePuck, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Embarrassed about the fact they had no login attempt limit.. they decided to lock many of your favorite features unnecessarily
- darkfate, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4I get random @ replies from people who I don't know all the time. So people must be searching for a topic and they see my tweet. This must happen a lot with kevinrose since almost everyone seems to follow him.
- MWeather, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4Maybe they should recode it with something that can handle the volume.
- Zaggynl, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Are they limiting logins yet? Don't care about the searches.
/s - TJMcWhiskers, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3It was a security and privacy issue, and also the reason for this new restriction.
- Filter, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3To prevent bots and plugins from DDOSing the service maybe? Just a thought.
- akatsuki, on 01/14/2009, -2/+5Twitter can't handle loads, makes searching a PITA, and just generally seems poorly designed in many ways. Always struck me that using something similar to XMPP-based distributed status messages would have been better anyway.
- PacoBell, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3I update my status exclusively on my phone. Yet another plus of owning a so-called smartphone.
- MWeather, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3MySpace has it's uses. I'd never remember my friends' birthdays otherwise. Social sites in general can be used for more than just trying to bring back the popularity of the blink and marquee tags.
- Tarsmus, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3I feel like Twitter at this point is a service with no real distinctive market. I would really like to see it become something. I feel a good place for it to make it's mark is through mobile phones. Allow people to update their status, and have that be read though an address book. That way, when looking to call someone, you could see a message such as "Working from 9-4 today, then off to dinner with the wife", you know at that point that they are unavailable, and would consider texting or other means of getting in contact with them as opposed to calling. The problem with Twitter right now is that it doesn't have much behind it, leaving it as almost a site without a purpose, though it definitely does have its strong points.
- Thomasaka, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Good luck getting Twitter to provide a status on.. anything. Features have gone away completely for months at a time with no update on their blog and no update on their Get [no] Satisfaction help pages.
- mentor972, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Use Summize
- fuse13, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2..because they have had quite impressive growth and are having performance issues? searches are a big hit on resources.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3It does seem pointless. But what do I know, I've never found a use for MySpace either.
- cplusplus, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3This "article" could be reduced to one sentence!
- KirbyMorph, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3Maybe the guy should have stopped searching and actually read some people's twits instead of spamming 20 some odd searches ina row. He can easily look through his followers and the people he's following for their follow/followers to find new people of interest. Many people in a particular field on twitter follow each other and its quite easy to find a rather large list of people to follow in a matter of minutes.
- Delta009, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I believe it has to do with every online search generating 7 grams of CO2.
- pedepy, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2you *have* to find something else to do with your time than search twitter.
- lemonpies, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2what about this tool then ? - it searches twitter and sites like mybloglog
here's a search I did for my town ...and oh look...
http://www.samepoint.com/?q=Weston-super-Mare
then if you go into more button (on right) you get more details
http://www.samepoint.com/comments.php?q=Weston-sup ... - vpgames, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2That's good, because most people only read the headline anyways.
- vpgames, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Is it "twits" or "tweets"? I've heard both
- vpgames, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2They must be getting ready to monetize it soon... I don't think they have any problem with people doing tons of searches, they just need to start making money soon before the funds dry up.
Businesses use searches all the time... Like @JetBlue or @Zappos for example, to see what people are saying about their company to their friends.
If and when Twitter starts making money, you'd better believe searching the flow of Tweets (Twits?) will be a big part of it - erincubert, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2Someone at work told me about this, and I thought she was joking. She said "I tried to keep searching and couldn't find my friends, do you know why?" ... No. Now I do.
- MWeather, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2I just started a Facebook profile, and that's the first thing I noticed. And pinax (third party Django social networking apps) has the same feature, too.
- divinediva, on 01/14/2009, -6/+8It is a good thing that Twitter is imposing limits on various actions.
- puderkon, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Its a good action taken.................
- bukkakeface, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3Dugg for Costanza.
- decker12, on 01/14/2009, -5/+6I've recently tried to use Twitter again after signing up for it 6 months ago. I just don't really see the need for it. Maybe I don't know enough people who give a ***** about what I'm currently doing in 250 characters or less. Likewise, I really don't have any reason to care about a friend's twitter page that tells me "I'm going into a meeting with the sales team" or "My latte is taking a long time to make today".
Regardless, I certainly don't have the time to update it with my latest tiny minuscule piece of errata that's happening in my life. Maybe I'm just getting too old for these internets. - inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1Great, here come the ads.
