Wow, he must have been pretty ***** stunned. - Chooxo, on 11/11/2009, -1/+12I just read the word "tweet" so many times it lost all meaning.
- Otto, on 11/11/2009, -5/+13People who edit their RTs will get me to unfollow them. Stop adding commentary to RTs, its annoying and pointless.
When you RT, you generally only have room for one word additions, and I don't give a crap about you adding "WOW" or some nonsense like that.
If you want to add commentary, here's the right way.
1. Click "Reply" to reply to the tweet you're commenting on.
2. Move the @name from the front of the tweet to later in the tweet instead. Like "I agree with @name , this political situation is nuts!"
Why do this?
- By hitting the Reply link, you add metadata to your tweet which provides a link back to the original tweet in every major twitter client.
- By not starting the tweet with @name, all your followers see it, so it's not a direct reply to the tweet.
- Also, you get the full 140 chars for your commentary, so you have room to say something of import instead of one or two useless words.
Use the new Retweet feature to RT. Use the Reply feature to add your own words. And if you only want to add one or two words, then just don't bother commenting at all. Nobody cares. - FredFredrickson, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7Shenanigans...?
- FredFredrickson, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7A grown man pitching a hissy fit, and virtually reduced to tears, over a change to Twitter that he doesn't like? What is this world coming to?
- novenator, on 11/11/2009, -3/+93rd party aps are so much easier to use than the web based user interface for Twitter. My personal favorite right now is TwitterFon, but it changes regularly. I don't have high hopes for the RT functionality in beta from Twitter.
- Braxo, on 11/11/2009, -4/+10I like to use Twitter for real-time search results on current events.
Being able to search an event and seeing people's images and thoughts on it, as it happens, is pretty cool. - smack1700, on 11/11/2009, -5/+10What the hell is Twitter?
- CaliforniaEagle, on 11/11/2009, -7/+12Bad move by twitter incorporating this feature into the service
- manicleek, on 11/11/2009, -3/+8If anyone says Twitter again I'll pistol whip them
- Ndelangen, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4here you go:
http://www.outshine.com/blog/2007/10/greasemonkey- ... - Orbital101, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4You're just that open-minded.
- ridd1e, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4If you want to add context to something, just write your unique tweet and post a link to the original. Or better yet, reply.
RTs are annoying for me and I love that I can disable them ALL because of the unified system. - Pxtl, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3To me, the "retweet is direct quote" feature makes sense - they're probably tagging retweets with some metadata that will prevent retweets from being sent to readers who are following both the source tweeter and the retweeter. If the retweeter changed the message, you'd lose this possibility since there is extra information the target isn't getting of the changes.
Really, Twitter is always going to be struggling between the Power of Plain Text and the character limit. - elmundio87, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3using the #help tags, you can get people to help you with problems, specifically I use it to get help from likeminded programmers
using the #googlewave tag i got myself a wave invite about 5 minutes after I started looking
so yeah, twitter is soooo useless - Shmio, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4Amen.
- MrChunks, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Sorry, that page isn't actually there. Buried.
- Orbital101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3"Stop adding commentary to RTs, its annoying and pointless."
Actually, I think people can write whatever they want to their Twitter feed. You can't stop them, but you can unfollow them (and nothing else) if it makes you this angry. - uberduger, on 11/11/2009, -4/+6I wouldn't digg a story about how Facebook tweaked their comment system, so why would I digg one about Twitter? Jesus, can someone please suggest me how I could hide every story on Digg that contains the words Tweet or Twitter? Through a Greasemonkey script or something?
Thanks :) - swantamer, on 11/11/2009, -2/+4Twitter PowerTip: Unless you are a ***** narcissist or a soulless corporate shill you have no need to even know this moronic, piece-of-***** thing even exists.
- manicleek, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Evil shenanigans
- Pxtl, on 11/11/2009, -2/+4Facebook for SMS.
- MrChunks, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2You know exactly what twitter is.
- jrm125, on 11/11/2009, -20/+22***** Twitter!
- Orbital101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3[Insult] + [Generalization about how people should do what you want them to] + [pre-emptive invitation to bury so it looks like you're in control of the discussion]
It's a time-honored formula. - chessthecat, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1You've thought about this way too much sir.
- joel8x, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4It is a beta feature. I'm sure if enough people gripe about it they will tweak it.
- TheyCMeTrollin, on 11/11/2009, -6/+7twitter is very useful. i know it's cool to be an elitist prick, and pretend you're above it though, so continue, we're all very impressed.
- gasoline, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2"How is Twitter useful?"
I don't have to send SMSes to tens of people and pay ***** of money for it. - Orbital101, on 11/11/2009, -4/+5Get some new material.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2How is Twitter useful? What can you do with Twitter that you couldn't do before it existed?
- angrytortilla, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4Using the web interface has always been a number of steps behind quality apps like TweetDeck and Echofon. This is a non-story. Twitter's re-tweaked retweets are in limited beta, it's ludicrous to gripe about it so early. Send feedback, then sleep peacefully. It's not rocket science.
- Vusys, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3Nothing of value was lost.
- uberduger, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I. Love. You.
- honeytech, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1The upcoming features which activated and deactivated last night on my account was options like Sent, Retweets by Other, Retweets by you and Your tweets retweeted.
- Haz3rd, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4Quite whining about Twitter. If you don't like it, don't read the ***** article
Commence burying. - winry, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2This guy doesn't know what he's talking about, competing with the apps using their api? wtf?
Retweets are very useful for people with more than 1 account, like people who work for a company with a dedicated twitter account for their blog post, etc. - Otto, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1>> "People should be allowed to make posts on Twitter they way they want to without having to listen to you telling them they're doing it wrong."
Where in the world did you get that idea? I can tell anybody anything I like. It's called freedom of speech, brother.
And you know what? You're doing it wrong.
>> "Follow the streams like you and, otherwise, zip it."
To which I reply "***** you, I'll do what I like, and if you don't like it, too bad." - Orbital101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1The point was: People should be allowed to make posts on Twitter they way they want to without having to listen to you telling them they're doing it wrong. People are way too over-concerned with what others are doing. And something like this is so trivial and easily-avoided, to boot.
You say "Stop adding commentary to RTs, its annoying and pointless." I say "Follow the streams like you and, otherwise, zip it." - dootzky, on 11/18/2009, -0/+0haha.. nice response, love it. very analytical. ^_^
- Otto, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1Or I can tell them to stop doing it, as it's annoying and pointless. Like I just did.
Seriously, what was the point of your reply? - MrChunks, on 11/11/2009, -2/+2I'd be really upset if you unfollowed me :-(
- appleKKK, on 11/11/2009, -2/+2twitter will not remain a dumb-pipe forever, especially as it adopts new revenue models.
Twitter clients and the home site will begin to consolidate - Trifold, on 11/11/2009, -3/+2Oh Jesus ***** Christ we have RE-tweets now?
- JCH897, on 11/11/2009, -4/+3Whenever I see something about twitter, I automatically bury it.
- niradg, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1brizzly.com/switch
- dootzky, on 11/11/2009, -18/+12twitter sucks.. I can't believe so many idiots out there think they are relevant, and keep posting..
the only "real" use of twitter is to a certain point simulation of RSS feed, and nothing else.. news and stuff..
oh, well, whatever.. bury me, 'ya twiters! :P
