- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+32Reminds me of my 5 year old when she doesn't know the answer. "I know the answer but I'm not going to tell you"

/sounds like a good investment - whatthefu, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6I don't know why anyone Twitters.
- BoneStamp, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Yes, of course we're going to make money soon! No, of course I won't tell you how... that would ruin my master plan. Muahahaa.
Um, I was just asking if the server is going to be back online soon. - mugicha, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4I'm going to tweet you the answer...keep checking back!
- Erectile, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Don't care.
- peterinjapan, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Why can't they say Twitter is free for everyone, but you can only tweet 50 times a month. If you pay $9.95 a year, you get unlimited -- I'd kick that much to them.
- doublefelix, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3pay-per-tweet
- cozinator, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3The revenue's coming, but the hairline's going.

- dronf23, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Maybe they can sell adds on the fail-whale.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3The ONLY viable business model is selling those phone numbers to spammers
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2plurk? jesus christ who thinks of these ***** names.
- DigitAl56K, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Oh PLEASE. They'll insert ads in your timeline. If they're really good they'll sell location-based ads. They could also charge a small subscription for things like SMS service which aren't essential but handy to heavy users, although any cost for the user will slow adoption and move users to other platforms.
- NathanMahdavi, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4tweet's from advertisers?
- JoeRW, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Well apparently some TV stations were showing Twitters down in their side scrolling footer during the nonstop Mumbai coverage last week. So they could charge media for that.
- theutopian, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't.
It's not worth paying for. - craeyon, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2hey, tools are useful, they protect you and your boyfriend from getting aids
- benologist, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2The obvious solution is to let companies tweet advertisements to select groups of users (or everyone). So obvious that it is in fact... probably what they'll do.
People are the only product they have. - apophenic, on 12/04/2008, -8/+10Twitter is so ***** stupid.
- str3ama, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I've seen this one before, here's how it goes
***spoiler***
The big grande plan is to slap on some contextual ads, put limits on amount of twitters sent out each day/week/month, offer premium subscription that gets rid of limits and increase the size of messages.
Users complain, threaten to use rival services like plurk but quietly end protest and continue using service.
***/spoiler*** - schnitzi, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2It's the South Park plan:
1. Get a billion users.
2. ???
3. Profit! - erichh, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2 Twitter will definitely be around...and if they become a bit quicker to respond to consumer feedback, they will stay at the top of the heap. Despite what he mentions about it being hard for noobs, it is the easiest platform requiring the least from the user. Twitter makes it easy to stay involved...and that's a strong business model.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Twitter needs to be bought by someone like MSN because its a good service as a part of a broader network. As a standalone service it will generate little revenue over time, certainly less than what will be needed to continue scaling.
- Erectile, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Pownce is shutting down in a matter of weeks.
- savocado, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2They will go freemium, just like Flickr.
- lolwaffle, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Treating them like normal tweets, to include underlying HTML code with no special styles or classes or anything to differentiate them, could possibly be a way to defeat adblock as well. Say a page shows 10 tweets at a time. Insert an ad tweet somewhere between 2 and 10 of every page.
Then again, I think they have to say it's an *advertisement* and not something the user wrote, so maybe adblock will find them. - bpeacock22, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1The moment I get spam tweets from advertising and can't ignore them is the moment I delete my account.
- Tyrant505, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Liar.
- m0llusk, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Update: Something is expected, but nothing has happened yet. Classic "tweet"!
- stutimandal, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1He will make a good politician.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2It's as stupid or intelligent as the people you follow. I've found a large number of authors I like are on it, and it's been really interesting getting a look at their thoughts every day. Same goes for a lot of other creative types who work from their homes. They're usually pretty isolated, and twitter provides them a ten second coffee break and us a chance to see how they form their ideas.
- boogerdigger, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1He knows what he's doing. He sold Blogger, and now has another successful venture. Congrats. The revenue will come, it's a great social tool, and is gaining popularity. Everyone relax lol
- crazlunatic, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1And by the way, I can't stand twitter but everybody's using it, so I need some convincing and help from you guys. First of all, what is the point of it if you can't tweet to someone that's not already following you? I know some blogs have asked people to tweet stuff to them, and they can somehow read it, but when I do it to others who are not following, they take no note of it at all
- megamod, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1maybe you should care if he makes all those tweets available to 3rd party research companies.
seeing what game is hot, etc. - blacklilyninja, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1exactly
- covertbadger, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1For years now I've refused to even click on tinyurls unless I know in advance what they are. Usually that means I've asked someone I trust to send me a URL, but longurl (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/863 ... ) is pretty helpful too.
- crazlunatic, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1about time they start considering about that
- brandonchicago, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Sounds like his business plan is the same as it was for Blogger: Build it up, wait for an offer, sell out to someone who knows how to make revenue from it.
- Barackalypse, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Of course he won't tell you how, he doesn't want to scare the users away before he actually does it. It will be interesting to see how intrusive it is and if they face any sort of mass defection over it.
- gubatron2, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Owning twitter is like being god and listening to everyone's thoughts. There's a lot of noise, but there's very valuable data in there as well. Just data mining it and selling it to Nielsen can make them tons of money a day. Imagine the same for every other company, the way compete.com does it. The funny part is that nothing is stoping us right now from building data mining services on all the public feeds.
But there's probably so much they can do, just by allowing 3rd party companies to have twitter commands and charging those companies cents on messages that use such commands, or commissions by the message. E.g. partnership with Paypal, or Google Checkout, i.e., you can send money just by doing:
paypal someone@email.com USD 20 I owed you lunch, here it is
that simple integration could bring twitter a lot of money if they got a percentage of the money transfered.
I think they have a sick sick biz model, they just need to have critical mass for it to work in a way nobody else can copy them, they must be close, and it must be really amazing since they keep raising so much money so easily.
Hell, they could even have pro accounts with a simple features, 200 character messages.
And of course, they could have very well placed ads, based on the content of your feed, but I doubt they'll go that route. - moothemagiccow, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1No! They're definitely going to come up with something different than this!
