Tweako: A Social News Site For Tutorials
blog.wired.com — Tweako is social news aimed at programmers that just launched a couple of hours ago. Tweako bears a similarity to Digg, but instead of news headlines the user submitted content is geared toward tutorials, guides, resources and services. I wouldn ’t go so far as to call it a Digg clone, but even if you did, a Digg clone for tutorials is a good idea.
- 745 diggs
- digg it
- tweako, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17What a surprise to see this up here. I hope everyone enjoys the site. Please let me know what you think..
If you look in the blog I actually cited and thanked Kevin Rose and the Digg team for their wonderful technology.
Enjoy..- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8So tell the cynics amongst us about your project ....
a) Is it just a copy of pligg or some other digg-style cms with a skin thrown up on shared hosting, or did you guys actually put effort into this?
b) Is it going to scale - sites like pixel2life and good-tutorials.com have huge volumes of traffic?
c) What sets you apart from p2l and g-t ... they've had voting (aka ranking) for years?
d) Why is it better to use yours vs. p2l and g-t? - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3/me = no relation to tweako but...
a) Looks like skinned pligg to me
b) It certainly can't handle a digging
c) It's down
d) It's down - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13http://tweako.com/
- HalBSure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't think you should be hosting it on a VIC-20. Spend the money and upgrade to a Commodore 64 and maybe we'll be able to access the site.
- swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if it is a solo project then who is the official representative? Tweako, MrBabyman, or Mikestefff??
Whomever: the category "Graphics" is far too broad, it should be application-specific, preferably split into 2d graphics/ 3d graphics. There is a huge "market" for 3d graphics tutorials, as the software is often complex and hard to learn without tutelage.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8So tell the cynics amongst us about your project ....
- dan328, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Good luck!
- ScoobyInc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Found the digg for the actual site:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Tweako_com_Collaborative_Computing_A_user_generated_site_for_geeks_alike - ShawnPrend, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2This is a great site, it's already got some very good resources!
- jonathono2000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5^ works at Tweako
- andrewbmoore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Briefly checked this site out and it looks promising. Being a developer, I like the concept too. I'll give it a "Digg".
- robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow, this is a great idea. Digg should get a Tutorials section, but this is the next best thing!
- aldomatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Great concept, ill be digging it and visiting it regularly
- istatic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1They should have invested in a better server first.
Also, the design needs to be redone. - locnguyen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This looks similar to Dzone.com....
- Mattie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"aimed at programmers that just launched a couple of hours ago"
Oh, I'm a programmer that just launched a couple of hours ago... guess it's for me.- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I was reading an AppleScript book last night, can I join? PLEASE?!?
- SuburbanDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Aimed at Programmers... not English Majors ;-)
- ITsaNetwork, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Wonder if digg will let them barrow some servers too...
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wonder if digg would let you barrow a dictionary. Maybe they could release one just for digg users .... some sort of diggtionary.
- Hearshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I developed a nasty rash from barrowing servers.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Already completely hosed.
How hard is it in todays business world to launch a freaking site that can actually handle the load? Maybe their first tutorial should deal with server farms and load balancing.
Geesh, hope their VC angels are happy with their money being pissed away.- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The problem is somesite does something successfully, then somekid sees how successful it is and writes a dodgy, unscalable clone of somesite and opensources it so they can generate some free hype and publicity. Then anotherkid figures they can be succesful too, all they need is a topic, a domain and hosting. 20 minutes later they're ready to conquer the world after committing $20 and a few minutes ftp'ing.
The best example is definitely eBay and the million empty clones out there, but there's 100's of copies of digg floating around too. None of them are anywhere near as succesful and until people actually step back and build a business model, then a site that scales, and then invest in some hardware (leased or owned, it doesn't matter) nobody's going to match the success of their inspiration.
I'm not saying tweako is using this very common "business plan" but given the site's down and the concept's old, I have my suspicions. - outlandish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why would you assume it's funded by VC angels?

- p3nguin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Nice Drupal site.
- Pingspike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Seems like a nice idea but the site Tweako.com itself is currently under the Digg effect so i cant see sh1t.
The uber clever 19 year old likely just copied layout designs etc as most did with digg-alike stuffs, and use premade APIs freely available on the net. To that i say Yawn, its not ground breaking etc etc. Its just another nice resource (assuming it stays online) - outlandish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Seems like it's back up. Probably learned something about server-tuning in the last 20 minutes. ;)
- Ashiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The negativity exhibited to any new project that bears even a slight resemblance to Digg is astonishing and ridiculous. That's right people it's not like a good product inspires other similar products in this world...Except maybe just about every successful ever created! How do you think we'd be now if people didn't copy Henry Ford?
After all. The Model T Ford was all we ever needed wasn't it and good ol' Ford was capable of catering to all our needs....
Personally, I welcome this new site and I wish it all the best. Digg doesn't do tutorials like this to such an extent and so it has it's place on the net as well as Digg. So bloody what if they mimicked the format? Get over it. - hsbsitez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I was planning to something similar, but differently. :) Looks like I can still do that.
- TrailOfDead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have to agree with Ahsiro. First, the Digg concept and technology has a very low barrier to entry, its the site topic and community that matters.
No, its not a wiz-bang revolutionary idea, its a solid non-funded effort by someone trying to do something fun and help some people out at the same time.
This is what Web 2.0 is about.
I applaud it! - bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -1/+0...This really isn't anything big to me. There are tonnes of "Social News Sites For Tutorials" out there. Just visit Pixel2Life (Which is considerably similar to this...), you'll find hundreds.
- poondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The idea of a Digg Style site for tutorials isn't new. http://www.tipclique.com has been doing this for a year.
- monkeymagik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5man there are some whiney bitches on this site
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And there are people who want to be applauded for being average. Being average is only an achievement if your hands are shaped like lobsters or you have a conjoined featus stuck to the side of your head.
- COBOLdinosaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now the CAPTCHA is broken if you try and register. If you are going to put up barriers to stop spambots, it is a good idea if you test it and make sure it works. It is tough to take a site seriously when simple things like registration don't work. If you are going to cobble pieces of canned software together to make a site, at least learn enough programming to make sure it works.
- bkemper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it is only for "programmers that just launched a couple of hours ago", then I guess it isn't for me. I launched myself years ago.
- COBOLdinosaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're having a great start aren't you? Spamhaus has you listed in the CBL which means you are already being blocked all over the place. I doubt you are spamming, but you need to learn how to configure a mailserver if you are going to use email to communicate. The CBL is relatively easy to resolve by fixing the server, but if you get on some of the more aggressive blacklists you are going to have a hard time.
As for the CAPTCHA, I am not surprised that you have only a negative response, instead of determining the cause and offering a remedy to pa potential user. HINT: If you are using some of the Drupal code for the CAPTCHA it is probably requiring cookies and can't validate the CAPTCHA without them enabled.
Why would a user who normally does not enable cookies even for sites like Digg do it for a new site, that is listed in the CBL? You have a lot to learn. Just use sessions... you do know what session are don't you?
You think you are being given a hard time? If you paid attention and responded in an adult manner you might find that the criticism is what helps you fix the site. You best develop a lot thicker skin if you are going to manage web sites. You got some registrations, you also lost a bunch and you will never hear from those who got frustrated with the inability to register. How many of your registrations have not verified? Could it be because they never receive the email you sent because your mailserver is blocked?
You have some problems to fix, and spending your time whining about the critics is not going to cut it. Right now you have a big buzz from the Digg traffic that will end shortly as the link slides off into the sunset, and you will be left with a couple of links from blogs, and a fraction of the registrations you could have had if you actually understood the programming you are using.
My guess is that you won't be around long, so there would be no point in posting links to original tutorials on my site. Perhaps you will prove me wrong but right now tweako looks like yet another dead-ended copycat built by a kid with too much of an attitude to listen to anything that does not start with "great site!". - Ceko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like you should have made a Wii site or a Apple vs. PC site, to tailor more to the Digg mindset (am I right?) On a more serious note, even though I haven't done more than glimpse over your site, props for releasing something like this. It's an important stepping stone in your journey as a developer. Also, to reply to COBOLdinosaur's rather tactless posts: you do need to learn to take criticism, but also you should expect a little more respect from people than the responses that undoubtedly have kept COBOLdinosaur stuck in middle/lower management for the entirety of his bitter bitter life.
Also I don't understand the hostility over using pre-generated packages, sure it takes more skill and forethought to generate this code from the ground up but the simple fact is that if you don't learn to use and rework code someone else has written you are going to be terribly unproductive and almost useless to a team. Why the hell would you write digg from the ground up if you're making this site? You can re-work pligg and have a great framework to modify, saving you tons of time on the more basic (and boring) tasks of making the base of a social networking site.
I know everyone's struggling to whip out their programming e-peens in this thread, but give the kid a break. - duggoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What???!! You used a store-bought hammer to build your garden shed. What an noob! I pounded my hammer out of raw iron that I mined from my own back yard. Learn to mine your own iron dude!
Sorry, but I couldn't resist. I'm frankly shocked at the amount of negative reaction you got for using tools.
Let's all chant together "Down with the wheel! Down with the wheel! Down with the wheel!..." - duggoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And what about the alphabet. I can't believe the people who are using the alphabet to post comments. The alphabet is old and it's been done before. Quit ripping off other peoples ideas when you post comments. You should at least have it together enough to invent your own alphabet...sheesh.
OK. I'll stop now... - mvannatter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Nice indeed. Will certainly use this service
- lolo2007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Already completely hosed.
