- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'd rather say it's too bad the title is misleading, cause the sita actually says "Scan, copy and fax with your camera phone or digital camera."
here is the direct link to the service: http://www.scanr.com/
according to their site
What can you do with scanR?
Use scanR to save, send and share any document or whiteboard. scanR is great when you’re away from your office or don’t have access to a scanner, copier or fax. Try using scanR to create digital copies of:
* Contracts and signature pages
* Whiteboard drawings
* Meeting notes
* Any letter-sized or larger document
Mobile faxing and copying
scanR enables you to email digital copies or send faxes while travelling or at home, without seeking and paying for a copy center. scanR can send copies to any email address or North American fax number.
the service works in 3 basic steps:
1. Take a picture
2. Send it to scanR
3. Check your email
step two is a real privacy concern, would you like to give a copy of your contracts and written communicationsor any other important document. this is the perfect industrial spying tool in 3 steps. basically people just send you their secrets, private documents, information about what they're doing, what they are interested in, where they are at what moment.
why do you have to download and install a .exe if you just need to send the pics via email to them ?
what are those guys doing to the file that a user can't do by himself ? - Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That is pretty cool. It's too bad that most camera phones suck, and take lousy VGA resolution pictures and blur.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Link to actual content: http://www.scanr.com/ .
- jas8522, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used to use my Palm Zire 71 with the Palm Ultrathin keyboard (sweetest keyboard ever), to take notes in class... first year university. Any diagrams or drawings of any sort were pictures. Only problem was that cameras in PDA's and Cell phones were not really popular yet, so the software couldn't link the pics to the notes, so it got pretty confusing.
On my iBook I can use Microsoft's note taking software and record audio, which becomes attached to the notes, but it would be nice to be able to take pics as well and attach them to it ... say with my PPC6700 1.3mp camera phone! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, but OCR online...that's new :)
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It might be great for taking notes in class without writing things down.
Of course, teachers would probably never let you use your cellphone in class to do it. And it wouldn't be a good solution if they charge you every time you e-mail them a new page of notes. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is there anything available that can do this on the desktop?
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google OCR

I did a test for a document with my phone (with the converted version of course). It's a 1.23 megapixel RAZR v3i. Check it out. - RexStJames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but it doesn't cost $100
Is there anything free on the desktop that does this? - Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note that most of the newest Nokia, Samsung and Motorola phones have 1mp or higher
- ckpcw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know of any programs that do this? I want to use pics from a digital cam. Thanks!
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1None that would work decent of a phone-camera.. And this doesn't require any software, just a phone that can email pics (most of them)
- Ben - Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hm, Wasnt this same thing (scanR) on the front page a few months ago?
- tmcpheeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome, works great with my Sony S710a!
See how well it will work with your phone here: http://www.checkmycameraphone.com/ - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those screen shots are tiny. Got any bigger ones?
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of those ideas that a lot of us have, but never would bother to take the initiative to this sort of level.
and you don't completley realize what a good idea it is until someone else does it.
... next time. - zyphbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The other thing you have to be very careful is they say "you must have a megapixel or higher resolution on your camera phone", not many people realize it, but while they have been promised as having "megapixel" quality on their phones, they don't really have it. Except for really new phones or PDAs/SmartPhones, many of them are maxing out around 640x480, so if that is your maximum resolution, don't even bother signing up, it won't work. (though they don't tell you that the picture will not work until you completly sign up and go through several emails and conformation emails.) So basically unless you have a REALLY new phone or you know the resolution is VERY high, just wait until you have replaced your phone to sign up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My Japanese phone has a 2MP camera (which is considered to be rather crappy, 3-4MP is the norm) and it has a scanning app built in!
- RexStJames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rauz
I'm not looking for OCR software, I know I can get that (though not free). I'm talking more like software that will "fix" whiteboard and document photos so they look better on a computer screen. If it does OCR too, then great. Bonus. - Pharoah6905, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they even have a "portal" for this that you can add to the google customizable homepage
- dch4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks a lot like Whiteboard Photo (http://www.polyvision.com/products/wbp.asp).

ScanR isn't really new though, it's been around for half a year or more.
And I wouldn't consider it free considering how much the GPRS costs are. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah my phone has a 0.3 mp resolution. Quite pathetic. Still a ways away from 1mp although I do have some friends who have them
- thejaysta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This idea is pretty good for those occassions where the electronic whiteboard stops working......I'll have to try this out with my camera phone. I have a SonyEricsson k750i which has a 2MP camera. Takes pretty good pics, so I'd like to see how it goes with this
- FireflyII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just tried it out--seems to work, sort of. I took some pictures with my phone, (Samsung A-940) and sent them to my computer, and emailed them from there. That way it is free, since there's no GPRS, txt, picturemail or other fees involved. This is not OCR at all, though. OCR would take a picture of text, and give you actual text. This service takes a picture and and sends it back as a pdf image--still a picture, really, though they basically remove all the color and try to sharpen the text so it's more legible. Didn't work, in my case. The text is just as unclear after it got back as it was when I sent it...probably moreso, really. I haven't tried the faxing feature yet, though if it's this unclear anyhow there isn't much point. Has anyone tried this and gotten anything useful in return?
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got my Treo 700w, everytime I use scanr it says picture out of focus for some reason, even with it set to 1.3mp
So I don't use it to much anymore, but it works nicely as a free fax machine... scan the document on my scanner to SD card; pop it in my treo and send it off. - TrbleClef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if only the Zire 71 had any decent (read < $100) solution for getting online wirelessly
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Portuguese: http://www.htk.com.br/noticia.php?noticia=534
- aussiSkiBum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think you will find it does do OCR, if you hit ctrl-A and past into a word doc the text is all there. This is what makes it a "searchable" pdf. So you can use it in two ways i guess, to clear up pictures of documents and to get the text from the document into new documents.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Portuguese: http://www.htk.com.br/noticia.php?noticia=534
- meijerpb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would be nice if one could just get the plain text returned rather than a searchable PDF, such that blind people could use the plain text OCR results with their phone screen reader to complement the raw image sounds of http://www.seeingwithsound.com/midlet.htm (The vOICe MIDlet for mobile camera phones)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Isn't this just OCR?
Been around for years - jeremythomas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0just email your photo as an attachment to doc@scanR.com... worked fine for me
- mirek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0perfect, now if only I can do something with those cam phone videos I took of my girlfriend
