- nightwave, on 11/14/2007, -3/+222Trent had an OiNK account! And mentioned all the reasons why it was popular. Great bitrates/lossless formats, no ugly John Mayer popping up in your face (iTunes Store)... all the reasons we frequented OiNK. We aren't all 'fight the man' and 'down with the RIAA' rebels, we are audiophiles with a desire for good, high quality downloads. We even owned a good amount of the downloaded albums in vinyl/cd format.
But nope, we are all heartless thieves, out downloading to tear down the music industry. It really is a shame. - Synthesize, on 11/13/2007, -2/+113What do you think about OiNK being shut down?
Trent: I'll admit I had an account there and frequented it quite often. At the end of the day, what made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store. Pretty much anything you could ever imagine, it was there, and it was there in the format you wanted. If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but there isn't the equivalent of that in the retail space right now. iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc. Amazon has potential, but none of them get around the issue of pre-release leaks. And that's what's such a difficult puzzle at the moment. If your favorite band in the world has a leaked record out, do you listen to it or do you not listen to it? People on those boards, they're grateful for the person that uploaded it — they're the hero. They're not stealing it because they're going to make money off of it; they're stealing it because they love the band. I'm not saying that I think OiNK is morally correct, but I do know that it existed because it filled a void of what people want.
He speaks the truth. Kudos to Trent. - electioneering, on 11/14/2007, -1/+102Wow, Reznor bought In Rainbows for $5000...I think I just became a Trent Reznor fan.
- zaPPP, on 11/06/2007, -1/+91I appreciate artists finally admiting that they use p2p themselves. But i doubt others will follow Trent's example. For me it is just one more reason to like the guy tho, and NIN of course too. This will sure get him a lot of credit. Anyone remember some guys named Metallica and Napster? *cough*
- wshs, on 11/01/2007, -1/+56I'm wondering who on OiNK knows Trent enough to give him an invite. I'm also wondering if the invites also extended to other artists.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+55Just became? What the freaking hell took you so long? The man is a genius not only of musical kind, but of public relations too.
- LetsGoHokies, on 11/13/2007, -1/+51"How long do you think until the labels are out of business?"
"They seem to be doing everything they can to make sure that happens as quickly as possible."
Trent GETS it. And he had an OINK account. Awesome - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+44Trent Reznor is the ***** man.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -1/+31I hate music.
There's like... too many notes and stuff. - oneoverzero, on 11/11/2007, -3/+29Don't forget, we hate music.
- Rikkochet, on 11/11/2007, -1/+26I actually just hate musicians for their freedom.
- Protoss, on 11/03/2007, -1/+25How did Radiohead do this for publicity? They said all along that a CD release was coming, and if you have been following, you'll know they plan on signing not with one of the Big Four, but with XL Recordings, an independent record company, and will only be signing with them for distribution purposes. I imagine Trent will do something similar, signing under HIS terms, and just for the distribution power that record companies have. You can't sell records solely online.
- tinkafoo, on 11/03/2007, -1/+25"At the end of the day, what made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store."
I've been thinking stuff like this for years. Does anyone listen to little me? It doesn't matter anymore, Trent just said it for me. - subxero37, on 11/11/2007, -0/+19Beavis and Butt-head reference?
Butt-head: "Uh, I'm like, angry at numbers."
Beavis: "Yeah, there's like, too many of them and stuff." - ExofusionX, on 10/31/2007, -2/+20Good to see some people come to the forefront without bearing pitchforks to OiNKers.
Even come out as one! - zioxide, on 11/01/2007, -2/+20Further evidence (as if we needed any more) that Trent Reznor is the ***** man.
- craprock, on 11/01/2007, -0/+17I think Saul's album is either the choice of free or five dollars. You don't get to choose.
- gadlaw, on 11/01/2007, -1/+18Trent Reznor has yet to disappoint me. His music has been great since the beginning, his concerts are awesome and despite being successful Mr. Reznor continues to speak the truth and doesn't toe the corporate line. I mean how awesome is that. Freaky Prince is over at youtube filing takedown notices against people who post twenty second clips of their babies dancing to his music on the crazy end of the spectrum. NIN rules.
- oxygen911, on 10/31/2007, -2/+18So THATS how all the unreleased NIN multi-tracks got on Oink....
Thanks for the remix material, Trent! - EvilDr.X, on 11/03/2007, -2/+18Right, because everyone knows Radiohead doesn't give a ***** about music. It's all image for them. What a bunch of sellouts.
- cunnybungler, on 10/31/2007, -2/+17That's what's cool about the internet though. He probably got an invite from one of his fans, unbeknownst to them. The guy's no stranger to message boards, he used to post on Prodigy back in the day.
- demonbaby, on 11/01/2007, -0/+14Two leaked tracks from the album: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ekrn4u
Don't Digg me down, this is legal and linked on NIN's official site. - xXGeechXx, on 11/01/2007, -0/+14I don't like NIN, not my thing but I really enjoyed this guys opinion on OINK... That is exactly how I felt about it, like the "Ultimate Record Store" and I would gladly put down 50 bucks a month to join something legal and legit like this...
Its easy, I can greatly expand my music knowledge, Its a great way to expose lesser bands, and the best part about OINK was the community and talking about music with people.
Just curious but if OINK charged to be a member would you join and how much would you pay? - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+14Sure, and Paris Hilton could win an Oscar for best actress in a lead film.
- kamisama, on 10/31/2007, -1/+15Although I thought it was totally unreal when I read this, in the end it doesn't really surprise me. Trent is a true music nutter, why wouldn't he be where all the rest of the nutters flock together, one giant fuzzy and cozy record store that had it all.
- cmgarcia, on 10/31/2007, -0/+13Doesn't Trent sound like he read this article a few days ago?

You used to buy an LP, sit down and have an intimate listening session with it. You'd go through the album art, read the lyrics, connect with the music. Now people download the songs raw, often listened to not in the order of the original album, etc. They add it to a playlist on shuffle with hundreds of other artists and play it in the background while they surf the web. In short, there just isn't the same connection to the music with most people.
That's the idea I get when he talks about music being devalued. - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+14Quit cashing on someone elses misfortune in with your ***** tshirts.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+13People might have better luck listening if you say stuff like that. Not think it.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -2/+14The thing I respect most about Trent is he really identifies with the average person.
I can't think of one other mainstream artists who's come out and said, "You know, ***** it, I understand exactly why they're doing it." He's not uptight Metallica, "No, don't steal my ***** music," but he's of reason, "I might not agree with it, but it's what's going on."
Might not agree with the MORALS behind it, but he knows WHY it happens - and it's not because we have an agenda to ***** artists.
Hell, I own pretty much everything NIN has ever released, and I re-downloaded it all from oink. Mainly outta laziness because my connection was fast enough to where downloading it was more sensical than ripping it all from my CDs. In that sense, maybe there was also someone else who never really heard NIN... who wanted to get a feel for the albums. Perhaps they're now a fan who attends shows.
As my possibilities there are for potential revenue loss, there are just as many for revenue GAIN to the artists directly.
All in all, it's good to have a voice represent the feeling that most of us have. - Dorepoll, on 11/03/2007, -0/+12Reznor also had an account at The Pirate Bay, where he would release things that Interscope wouldn't. Like the Closure DVD, the remastered Broken tape and a bunch of rarities. Cool guy, very in touch.
- La9os, on 10/31/2007, -0/+11he actually released a lot of multitracs on his own website.
- pattink, on 10/31/2007, -1/+12Yeah, that would make sense if it wasn't Metallica. Part of the reason that Metallica got so huge is from illegal bootlegs of their concerts when they first started, then the people started to buy their albums when they were readily available. Seems that most of the users on Oink were just like this.
- markperia, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11I wouldn't be surprised if Trent is in Digg right now and probably reading these comments.
- serra, on 11/01/2007, -2/+12Anything that mentions Trent Reznor has my vote instantly. He's the man!
- r00t3d0ut, on 10/31/2007, -0/+10maybe metallica can hire trent as their new public relations coordinator...
- fragile00, on 10/31/2007, -0/+10Well given the fact that Trent and Rob have been friends for the past 7 years, yes.
- BlueStarr, on 10/31/2007, -0/+9I remember seeing Slam Nation starring Saul Williams....he was ill with his poetic lyrical skill. Good to see he's still doing what he loves.
- Jerryskid02, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10...well I knew you were being sarcastic.
- juicebag, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10There are Pirate Bay accounts?
- fragile00, on 11/01/2007, -0/+9What makes you think your opinion weights more?
-1 :)
Lay off the starwars. - zaPPP, on 10/31/2007, -3/+11Maybe Rob invited him? Someone said he is doing the artwork for NIN and so.
http://www.demonbaby.com/blog/2007/10/when-pigs-fl ... - Chaoticfist, on 10/31/2007, -0/+8Go Trent, This dude really get it, as well realizes that a lot of people actually do buy the music they download, i buy most of the albums i download. He also gets that people want DRM free high quality music, good for him.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/31/2007, -1/+8Napster didn't steal anything.
- Mike89, on 11/01/2007, -0/+7HI TRENT
- badwithcomputer, on 11/01/2007, -0/+7Trent Reznor just sold thousands of concert tickets and a ton of merchandise thanks to his words in this article. Well played.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -5/+12Damn it, double post, sorry, Digg lagged. :(
- imjustabill, on 11/01/2007, -0/+7Did you even RTFA? He never claims that file sharing is morally correct, but the industry isn't offering any decent alternatives. Pretty much all the online music stores are low quality and full of DRM. Look at the Saul Williams album he produced, you can get it for free at 192kbps or pay 5 bucks to support the artist and get higher quality, even flac. He's said for quite some time that he wants to do something like that for his next album. Of course, if you read the damn article you'd know that.
- zaPPP, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7The author of that article, Rob, apparently does the artwork and such stuff for Trent and NIN. They know each other.
