- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6been done more than once! I think there's even a W3C standard describing how site annotations would work.
Google will help you find at least TEN of these "revolutionary breakthrough" services. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=dwZ&q=post+sticky+notes+on+a+web+page&btnG=Search - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the info, but you're getting a thumbs down from me for the lame blog plug. That's a cardinal sin here.
- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is there no McDonalds where you are? Was spamming sj the only job you could get?
Allow me to express my love for your comment by using two simple words that even a simpleton such as yourself will understand: ***** OFF.
That is all. - tinyjesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sounds promising, but you have to wonder about the wikipedia effect, or even the kind of stuff that happens on digg. if people are allowed to tag websites with whatever they want, what's stopping the spammers on digg from spreading to this?
- martian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I foresee a lot of "buy viagra online!" comments on pages
- johnrwaite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1same as www.notedropper.com - but notedropper is cooler
- robcornelius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IIRC one of the other "revolutionary" companies that tried doing just this had massive security holes in their system that let all sorts of gremlins out. Lets hope this one is slightly different before it vanishes.
- gossipninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do wish there was a standard for this sort of thing, of course the problem ,as mentioned above, is spammers and page crappers. I like how some companies that sell refurb and off brand products (like woot.com) have web forums for users to discuss their experiences with the product and ask questions but many sites that sell this type of merchandise (i.e. geeks.com) do not. I bought a personal media player made by some Korean OEM (Pontis Portable Media Player MX2020) . Different reviews were good, it ran linux, blah, etc. but I almost never use it because it has to buffer the entire mp3 into memory before it begins playback, meaning there is a minute or more gap between songs. WTF? None of the reviews mentioned that, including one at a big linux community page (name escapes me). If users were able to comment on the product page they could tell future customers about problems like this. And of course this is why companies DON'T want this tech out there.
- keenada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another very popular tool is StumbleUpon - http://www.stumbleupon.com
It's the same concept - social networking combined with page "sticky" notes. You can read what those before you thought of a site. - groe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using TrailFire for a week or so and like it ok, but because you can only leave one marker per page, I prefer Diigo, which lets you highlight and append stickynotes to any number of locations on the page. This makes it useful for collaborative editing. As for spam, I guess that would be a problem when using it in the way everybody else is talking about, looking at other people's bookmarks. But even if you don't do that, you can still email links to your collaborators, so they only see your notes. Diigo has also addressed the spam issue with their policies, but I don't know how effective they are.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What's with the searchjerk urls recently? It looks like spam...
- pferrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to correct a few things (since I work at TF):
* You can put as many marks as you want on a page.
* You can hide everyone's marks if you are only interested in your own.
* TF is more about trails of marks than something like a sticky note. It turns the entire Web into something like a wiki. You add your own markup and links to pages.
* You can share these with whomever you wish and filter out what you don't want to see.
* Policy and user review prohibits spam and advertising abuse but no system is perfect.
* Not revolutionary? And your point is? - barzantone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yep. everything old is new again. coming soon - a new, revolutionary way to shop for groceries - ALL ONLINE!
- deanc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Yep been done before, it's a company called third voice who went bankrupt in 2001.
basically all of the website content owners sued them out of existence, I dont remember the specifics now but it had to do with content owners having the rights to refuse license to people repurposing their content which a modification of the information of the content by posting notes did (yes I know you aren't changing the original content etc but thsi is what they got sued for).
I'm fairly sure they still own the technology rights as i never read anything about it being sold.
Trailfire better have their ducks in a row legally or pull the product (man people have such short term memories).
Cheers,
Dean
