- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52as long as they cant see that im downloading "bangbus_lesbian_midget_strapon_4.mpg" via utorrent, im cool with it.
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Those IP address traces are a farce, they use outdated IP databases and usually just give directions to a communications exchange nearby where you live.
You still get the basic area where they are though. - CptCarnage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14meh, probably bogus, the main site http://www.p2p-monitor.com/ asks for a uname password.
- 1jaxstate1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I'm going to digg this down and call *****. That globe would be covered with markers if they are really tracking BT traffic.
- the1andonly1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13eh, can they really track your ip address down to the street level? Somehow I doubt it (though I'm open to correction here)
- anthrt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Besides the fact that this is on Google Earth, what does this have to do with Google?
- jknevitt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow, Poland really likes their P2P. :)
- unrealmp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yay for deleted video... -_-
Bury for that - Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Damn! They found me!...
- bradmiddleton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's obviously only tracking one tracker, not all torrent activity.
- FLaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the video is just showing users from one torrent. Not everyone downloading everything over BT right that second.
- kahrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That map says that only 20 or so people are using P2P in the UK. I find that very very unlikely. This is either false, or very very badly designed software that can find say 1 in every 10,000 people or something.
- JackTheRipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i cant get it to play
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it may only be showing whoever is seeding/leaching a particular torrent. doesn't necessarily mean that its all bit torrent users or incomplete data. there are no facts on how the IP's are being obtained, we can speculate all we want, my theory seems to be the most plausible.
- fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Love the way it says "state-of-the-art" in the description!
Its NOT!
One trackers logs > export XML file via php > load it into google earth > ta-dah! - lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With an IP address you can figure out what ISP owns the range the IP address is in (using whois or arin), and usually the ISP has a public street address (just like any other company). You can figure out exactly where the ISP is, and though that won't be your home address, it will usually be close (at least in my experience). For example, when I go here: http://www.ip-adress.com/ (edit: digg doesn't hyperlink it correctly, copy&paste into new tab), it says my ISP is a few towns over from my actual home address.
- Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.p2p-monitor.com/
need username and password?
- Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Theres a huge linux scene in Poland, so a lot of it will be distros etc...
- whatyousay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"bangbus_lesbian_midget_strapon_4.mpg" eww wtf, number 4, are you kidding me. number 3 is the way to go.
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No it couldn't be more accurate. Last week we discovered fire too...
- LakeshoreBaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that there are ways to track people if they really want to, but this story ties to Google Earth is complete lies. Propaganda to intimidate.
- fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lol
People are saying they use proxys.......big wow, you will fall into a trap one day which will be owned by the goverment!
Unless you use highly private proxys....of course!
But if you search for "proxy" in google, 60% of the proxys are owned by goverments to catch the "clever" people, who usally share the most stuff!
Your proberly safer just keeping to private trackers! ;) - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's pretty scary.
- unruled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol... if I were on there, I'd be the brightest and biggest spot for miles with my 100mbit :D
whats with the login at the site though? - LakeshoreBaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only piece of ***** scare tactic propaganda I've seen funnier than this is the story about the police dogs that sniff out pirated DVDs. Digg shouldn't censor anything. But if they have to, they should censor this garbage and not 911Truth.
- tardpicard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2does anyone know of a relatively easy and/or cheap way to geolocate IPs with google earth?
- ReubADoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone have that information yet?
- yardApe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's why Peer Guardian is my friend. Not foolproof by any means, but quite helpful. ;)

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1100Mb, eh? Who do I have to work for/where do I have to go to school to get that?
- zolushkatykva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very strange. I've always liked posts like that. Dugg.
- eanbowman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah... DUH!
To track all IP addresses on all known trackers would definitely paint the globe.
It's entirely possible to use IP database lookups of addresses to populate an XML file and use it with Google Earth.
If you go into the details of most torrent programs you can see all of the people connected to your machine directly or indirectly. It won't list everyone on the tracker but everyone you know of.
If you did it on the tracker level you'd get everyone. - Khaos813, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad somebody is smart enough to see a honeypot...
kudos flux - Stryder81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Private Trackers + Peer Guardian + Firewall = Golden
- shaun1018, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Smart people use proxies... I change continents every 15 minutes : )
While they aren't untraceable they are tough to get when you have a server in Holland routing through a server in Russia routing through a server in the Netherlands and so on and so on. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Hey, could you give me a link to that torrent?
[/sarcasm] - talltimbers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Trust me, there are ways of finding out who is downloading and what they are downloading. In this country (US) we have that fun bunch called the Business Software Alliance (BSA) that is paid by vendors to check what is out in the P2P space among other things. All they do is to search for torrents of a particular title that a vendor has paid to have monitored and when they find that you've been serving out torrents all they have to do is check if any of them are hosted domestically and they go from there. That doesn't take a lot of skill to run some torrent searches and match the the first triplet of the IP address to a country. As far as the tracking it down to actual street addresses don't believe that they can't do it.
Here's my experience with the slime at BSA, short version. I received an email through my ISP's "compliance and monitoring" that they have information from the BSA that I have been using their network for the illegal distribution of copyrighted material. The email was a forward from the BSA themselves. In the initial email from the BSA to the my ISP it spelled out the names of the files, size, how long it was "hosted" and some other *****. I don't dispute what they found (it was a lousy wave editor if anyone is interested), but the manner in how they went about it. According to the BSA if I have a wireless hotspot and someone else is downloading it's my ass in the squeeze, not the downloader. I guess they figure it's easier to shake down the innocent and not the perpetrator. To give you an idea of what these brown shirts are and how they operate there a link of the site. Also, don't forget to check out their snitch program for ratting out them the names of people who have committed such grievous sins. I don't know about anybody else, but with the other happy hour crowd at RIAA, ASCAP, et al it's getting kind of creepy out there.
http://www.bsa.org/usa/ - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1GOOGLE! STOP IT! Just stop it.
Do you want to help the RIAA and MPAA?
Serves you right that Viacom is suing you.
You should decide which side of the fence you are on, douchebags!

What is Digg?
