- Katsushiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To the people complaining about it being an 'invasion of privacy'; I'm as much of a privacy advocate as the next guy. That's why the data I carry in my USB Keychain is encrypted. Why I use things like Tor and HTTPort to proxy my web surfing, and why I always use disposeable emails from places like mailinator and sneakemail.
Having said that, really, this is no invasion of anyone's privacy. Whenever you visit a website, the server logs your IP. It *has* to, its the only way it knows of sending you the data you requested. Any webmaster for any site you visit only has to look through his logs to see the IP addresses of the people who visited him, at what times, and what files they requested. That's just the way the web works. The only thing this service does is map those IP's to an approximate geographical location using GMaps. Which means that the best it can do, without actually going into the ISP and requesting that they turn over their customer records of you, is to show the approximate location of your ISP. That's all. This is not any infomration that any webmaster would not have been able to get before. The only neat thing about this is that now that information is shown in a nice zoomable map.
If you're truly that worried about the websites you visit knowing your IP, do like me, use a proxy (or a chained series of proxies for the truly paranoid), or use a service like the EFF's Tor that sends your request through a chain of other IPs first.
But this? It's no new threat to anyone's rpivacy, so stop whining. - M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course not, but If it shows a picture of my house from space, and then posts a IP of were I live, any intelligent person could find your address, it's actually simple.
- jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it just places the mark in the middle of the city based on your ISP
- deanau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You didn't expect it to locate your home address did you?
- Red_Eye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is sweet now I can see where all the stupid people that come to visit http://www.patentlystupid.com come from!!
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, nevermind this ***** wasn't even close. It got the state right, but tens of miles away. It must be the ISP headquaters or something.
- tulinius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too bad the website doesn't work with konqueror - might not work with safari 2 either considering safari adapted khtml..
- autok2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool, nice digg!
- Spanktacular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice digg. Thank you.

- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Katsushiro
I wasn't "complaining" about invasion of privacy, I said "invasion of privacy?" See the question mark, that means I'm asking.
If your familiar with the english language then I'm sure you know what that means. By simply asking a question does not mean I want to be insulted and attacked, do you?
And btw, you obviously don't understand what this is about, I don't care if they know my IP, but I do care that they then go on to make software that easily tracks the IP to a specific state and city, within literally a couple of miles. - 1337freek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that script is awesome i cant wait till i see where my visitors are reading from and then track 'em down or something and have some pure unfiltered fun
- Griffology, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems to be up and running again...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jediboyt you are a moron, you have to post javascript in the HTML source as well, and im sure you dont own apple.com now do you.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a definate invasion of privacy
- Smoktiludy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin should register Digg for a day or two.
- Fashion_Nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this would be scary, but I am guessing that it uses IP addresses as the tracking method. This may mean that it will show the "owner" of the IP address instead of my actual address. I guess it could be running a tracert to an IP and using the location of the last Router prior to my IP. I wonder how complex it is.
- ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I registered Apple.com"
You do realize that in order for it to work, you have to include that one line of Java code for each page. Unless you have access to Apple's Web site, this is not going to work. - jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I registered Apple.com

might take about an hour before data begins to show. - M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0At least I still haven't shown up. But I'm probably jumping the gun. :(
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That IS scary! Enough Said.
Invasion of privacy? - M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I mean they can find your name on one site, track you to another, and then find out pretty much exactly were you live.
- quik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0...at http://myguestmap.lorca.eti.br/index.jsp
- quik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This one has too many ads & the map is not very big. I couldn't even figure out how to add myself to the map! There's a much better service available.
