- ZMerlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I disagree. I'm looking forward to reading this article.
I have been looking for a nice, simple, well laid-out header article for a while, and this appears to be quite well done.
Digg++ - udha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I allready understand the 'mysteries' of email, those I try to explain it to will benefit from this descriptive explaination, dugg to help the common knowledge of internet users.
- Nathaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice except for the people most of us would like to trace and subsequently blow a hole in their face (spammers) would have those emails traced back to their zombie boxes.
- bandsaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good article, but it should also have mentioned that headers can (and in spam often are) faked. So you can normally only trust Recieved headers at the point where it reaches your ISP.
- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg.
I agree with the comments that it is good to have intro topics once in a while. I had to learn this info a few years back when I became list-master for a genealogical email list. So I can appreciate that people have to learn things --we not all born 1337, y'know!
Maybe some people actually go to digg.com to learn things. - aeroguy007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if digg effect, http://www.onimoto.com.nyud.net:8090/index.php?post=50
- ckrimmel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1excellent write up, you made something that is relatively difficult to do a great deal easier for people that need to know this. definite +digg.
- SephirothAlpha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Definitely helps when u r paranoid or someone is bugging urnrnThough nothing new.... if u know that emails have more info than u can see...Dugg for others benefit
- helzerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For everyone whining about "noobie" posts, I think it's good this link was posted. I participate in some anti scam/phishing communities and see a lot of good (albeit not technically savvy) people taken in by scams that would have been very apparent had the victim just read the header.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't mind a n00bish article now and again, but at least label it as such:
Headline:
"Beginner's guide to tracing an email"
Article:
"Look at the headers."
Done. - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^if the users aren't going to clean the spambot crap off their systems then the ISP should lock them down...
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.samspade.org/
- sanjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this was common knowledge.rnbut the real spammers dont usually send from their own IP addresses.rnrn*Dugg*....rn.... for the benefit of people who have been abused by ppl using their own addresses(lame spammers!!)
- bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0crap, now there will be a new wave of those email tracing reward spams
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/nothing/billgate.asp - harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing I didn't see mentioned in the article is that having a large collection of saved emails makes being able to read the headers actually useful. If you are recieving anon-emails about personal information it's normally someone you've already run across before.
It's amazing the number of times I've been able to correlate an anon-email to someone with an established posting history on a mailing list the sender and reciever are part of. Got to love DSL connections that keep the same IP address for months or years at a time. - Hieros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome, I just tracked this dude down. For those using gmail, the senders IP is in the "Received: from...([xx.xxx.xxx])" line.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Next: "Writing an email" ?
- hyppysiili, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks, now even I know how to do it. +digg+

- redrover12345, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0How does this get over a 1000 diggs. Bunch of newbies. I need to post my story on how to tie your shoes.
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Fsck. I've known about this since the mid-90's.
Gotta find some way to make $$$$ from obvious knowledge.
"Luke, read the RFCs". - mrblaq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wow, digg is totally populated by non-thinking retarded n00bs.
- sagedude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1mrblaq said "Wow, digg is totally populated by non-thinking retarded n00bs."
I completely agree. With basic stuff such as this reaching the front page, how anyone can see digg as a slashdot killer is beyond me. - deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0OFF topic... god they have to get this new code image thing right.. it is soo ***** annoying..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0OMFG, what is with all these fu%@ing noobie ass topics? What has digg became?
