- seldon452, on 02/15/2008, -7/+145For the 11th time: This is the final nail in HD-DVD's coffin.
- davidrools, on 02/15/2008, -10/+117I'll admit I wanted to see HD win, but I'm glad it's over. Seriously, now, they just need to concede defeat.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -12/+83Anyone remember back when the PS3 first came out everyone on digg who said "this is the "x" nail in Blu-Ray's coffin" would get like 100 thumbs up even if it had no basis in reality?
- seldon452, on 02/15/2008, -2/+49Welcome to digg. How may we help you?
- tendonut, on 02/15/2008, -0/+43This sure set off a red flag when I was at Circuit City this morning...

- mywhitenoise, on 02/15/2008, -5/+30It's "Blu-Ray".
- dangerousNS, on 02/15/2008, -26/+50HOORAY!
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -1/+25Friggin nail keeps coming back up. The carpenter that nails that nail needs to be fired.
- Sniper, on 02/15/2008, -2/+25People are still saying Ron Paul will win.
- Xybr, on 02/15/2008, -0/+23I supported HD DVD, but now it's time for there to be 1 HD format to prevent mass market denial. On the upside, Blu-ray already has drive burners available. Hopefully the prices will be driven down within 1-2 years. I need like 4 50GB BD-R's to backup the videos in my iTunes Library. :)

Here is the actual article from the original source.

- schnikies79, on 02/15/2008, -1/+21I live within a few miles of major city in Indiana. I can see the skyline if I stand on my roof. Like or not, there are still a lot of people in the U.S. that have no broadband access and won't for the foreseeable future.
As for the hicksville comment. 60 million people live in rural areas in the U.S., but hey, who gives a ***** about them right? I'm not moving to downtown NYC so I watch TV. - schnikies79, on 02/15/2008, -0/+19I care. I can't get broadband and I can't get cable. Satellite is my only option.
Thanks for playing. - ibeetle, on 02/15/2008, -0/+19In the original artical the Hollywood Reporter shows the latest Nielsen numbers
81% Blu-ray 19% HD DVD.
So Toshiba just might be a little worried. - jacksons98, on 02/15/2008, -0/+19@mooseontheloose
Most people I know can't even stream youtube at a consistent speed let alone 1080p HD video and quality sound. - AnimeOmega, on 02/15/2008, -3/+22Remember back then when ppl on digg said ron paul would win?
- jwdav, on 02/15/2008, -0/+18You are aware that Blu-Ray was in the works for over two years before Toshiba & Microsoft and the DVD forum established HD-DVD, right? HD DVD was an attempt by Toshiba to keep the DVD royalty money coming in.
- dvsbastard, on 02/15/2008, -2/+18I am reporting that comment as offensive - For insulting basic human intelligence...
- wilf_brim, on 02/15/2008, -3/+17Oh snap. I thought that Toshiba would try and keep the fight going until July, but this does have a very strong ring of truth to it, even though it IS just a rumor at this point. Looks like HD-DVD is going out with a whimper. Bummer.
- COBalance, on 02/15/2008, -12/+24Finally, the beta-max of the digital world dies and I can invest in a Blu-Ray player!
- maley, on 02/15/2008, -0/+11$19 DVD? You were an early adopter. DVDs were the same prices as BRD/HD-DVD are now when they first came out.
Blu-ray will come down to the same $15/$20 price tag in time just as DVD did. - SilverBlade2k, on 02/15/2008, -1/+12finally. Was waiting for a format to win, regardless OF the format. Now to wait for affordable Blu-Ray media and burners.....oh..and Blu-Ray ripping software..
- schnikies79, on 02/15/2008, -1/+12Hopefully this will speed up cheaper blu-ray burners and media. Perhaps media that isn't priced in the double digits?
I'm more interested in a blu-ray burner than a blu-ray player. - loneraven, on 02/15/2008, -3/+14Eh, I'm not too surprised. I bought an HD-DVD player for $100 before black friday... and while it's a little disappointing that it'll be a dead format, the hd-dvd player is a pretty nice upconverting dvd player as well. So all is not lost.
- altgeeky1, on 02/15/2008, -2/+13>Digital media is the future.
Yeah, and so is cold fusion power.. and both in the year 2022. - jimsowden, on 02/15/2008, -0/+10The DRM is primarily the same as on the HDDVD side, and why aren't Toshiba and Microsoft greedy for pushing their equally proprietary format? Just because it's sanctioned by the DVD group isn't a distinction, VHS didn't endorse DVD, which competed with Laser-Disk and won because of, wait for it, a higher capacity and ability (in addition to size).
- keithwired, on 02/15/2008, -0/+10Really? so when DVD was made the new standard medium for data the DVD people with no competition were free to ***** us all till we loved them, and they did?
- altgeeky1, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9Nope... a single format is. Now all the people "waiting" for the war to die can join in and help drive prices down.
- Giga, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10The person who should have fired the carpenter, has promptly been fired.
- TylerL82, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9That's the last nail in his coffin.
- maley, on 02/15/2008, -0/+8You do realize that Sony/Toshiba were at the tables talking on settling on one format before an unnamed company convinced Toshiba to go it alone?
- ziggotron, on 02/15/2008, -2/+10There's still competition with other Blu-Ray players on the market. I think you have the same common misconception a lot of people have; Sony did not single handedly create Blu-Ray and it does not own the format.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+8"HD-DVD has (perhaps the past tense 'had' is now more appropriate?) better software and compression"
No.
"Sony would have used HDi for their software"
No, ideally they would have used java as it's far more powerful/flexible.
Thankfully they did
"but HD-DVD was the better format for HD video"
No it wasn't. Thanks to it's inferior scratch protection and capacity. - altgeeky1, on 02/15/2008, -1/+9Haha SOUR GRAPES any? Here, have some cheese with that.
- altgeeky1, on 02/15/2008, -0/+8The irony of your post is, Microsoft was ANTI both formats... they only gave money to HD-DVD to FINANCE the war... like when Microsoft gave money to SCO.
The end of the format war is a HUGE blue to Microsoft, who wanted to become a THIRD format with movie downloads tied to the X-Box. - kravex, on 02/15/2008, -2/+9Yeah, monopolies are always good news.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7I too live between three major Colleges (UT, ETSU, MTSU) yet because where I live 200 yards from the road Comcast doesn't feel like running a teey bit of cable so I can get broadband, oh well I don't want Comcast touching my house either way
- drjekelmrhyde, on 02/15/2008, -3/+10Toshiba should release sub 200 blu-ray players
- altgeeky1, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7You missed the boat. Dealnews had a link, you could get a Sony credit card and get a PS3 40GB for $299 ($100 off) AND finance it 1 year NO INTEREST. That ended Jan 31st.
- Kamill85, on 02/15/2008, -3/+10Thank you Captain Obvious, you saved the day again!
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7Well I guess I stand alone, I consider my 360 add-on worthless upon the netflix announcement. I can now watch We were soliders, constantine, and the 3 other super crappy movies I got for free for buying one.
- anti_hax0r, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7anti?
- TypeEE, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6Or $99 blu-ray player for mother's day.
- dboy3587, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7*throws laser disc player out window....now i can commit to one
- betona, on 02/15/2008, -2/+8Seriously: when will I see a v2.0 set-top Blu-Ray player for under $150? Anything else and I'm not interested.
- fani, on 02/15/2008, -3/+9More like : BLURAY
- JigoroKano, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6They will likely increase their margins and start making money.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7How does it affect the average consumer really? I pop the movie in my player, it plays, movie finishes...no complaints
