- DearSergio, on 02/18/2008, -59/+180I would support Blu-Ray, but it killed my favorite Animal Planet TV host.
- Andy.D, on 02/18/2008, -20/+119How many times are we going to all claim that this is a done deal when it's still not official?
http://digg.com/tech_news/HD_DVD_death_still_not_o ...
Another rumor from another anonymous source no different from last week. - AnacondaHL, on 02/18/2008, -15/+108Isn't anyone else amazed that the PS3 is somehow the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market?
- ibeetle, on 02/18/2008, -10/+85Jesus ***** christ! I have a Playstation 3... and yea I am happy that Blu-ray won... but *****. How many times do we need the HD DVD is dead from engadet on the goddamn front page with only signal digit Diggs?
Can we please have a moratorium on the hourly HD DVD is dead, and all engadet stories... just for one ***** day... please!
Submit a story from Reuters... it goes nowhere with 3 diggs. Submit the same story directly from a companies press release... it gets a whopping 10 diggs. Submit the same story through engadget (with their ***** blog spam comments) and it gets 3593 diggs, and is on the front page with only 26 diggs.
HD DVD is dead. We get it. Now in the words of Dennis Leary, Go get laid, smoke a joint, eat a twinkie, and move on. - elliotys, on 02/18/2008, -8/+77I don't care what anyone says. The HD-DVD drive for the 360 is not heavy enough to "make a good boat anchor".
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -5/+54Those of you waiting for the mass clearance sales:
Spend your money wisely. At some point that cheap $149 Toshiba A35 is going to stop working and then what are you going to do? Let me show you my collection of 8-track tapes. Let me show you them. - SenorCardgage74, on 02/18/2008, -5/+39Im a total BluRay supporter, but I dont think this is true yet:
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Toshiba/ ...
"Toshiba is denying weekend press reports that it has decided to drop its HD DVD support, saying that the company is "currently assessing its business strategies," but that no final decisions have been made.
In an official statement issued this morning, Toshiba said, "The media [has] reported that Toshiba will discontinue its HD DVD business. Toshiba has not made any announcement concerning this. Although Toshiba is currently assessing its business strategies, no decision has been made at this moment." - Radan, on 02/18/2008, -3/+34That's what the power brick is for.
- adrianmonk, on 02/18/2008, -5/+36You feel sorry for people who knowingly took a big risk and then didn't win on their gamble?
- chillincool, on 02/18/2008, -1/+30There's been drives for PC's since they came out o.O and they play both bluray and hddvd too.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/18/2008, -2/+31Hasn't it been 2 years?
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -9/+36I don't really give a ***** who wins these stupid "format wars", just hurry up so I can buy a new player without worrying if I threw my money away.
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -11/+37I feel bad for those people who bought an HD-DVD player with a ***** load of HD DVDs near the day it got released, i would be pulling my hair out right now.
- SemiSarcastic, on 02/18/2008, -2/+27I won't believe it until I see Micheal Bay jump from an exploding 20 story building with HD DVDs flying out, Sony execs eating The Bourne Ultimatum on HD DVD in a basement and pooping out a Blu-Ray version and Toshiba execs digging a ditch and shooting unused HD DVD players into it pseudo Nazi SS style...Oh and two of my friends photographing and taking notes.
- piratearggghhh, on 02/18/2008, -3/+27HD DVD fought a good fight but really from the beginning it was an uphill battle, especially with Sony actually owning a movie studio which virtually guarantees an incomplete library. When coupled with the PS3, the odds were in BR's favor. The bottom line is while it sucks for HD DVD, I'm glad this format war is ending and now hopefully movies will drop in price. $30 is a ripoff and I'm not buying that no matter what resolution it's in.
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -0/+24Thanks Yoda.
- hokie47, on 02/18/2008, -1/+25If Toshiba handed out free handjobs with HDDVD players, we'd all be hearing about the death of Blu-ray.
- drewfer, on 02/18/2008, -4/+28Use your HD-DVD drive for you Xbox 360 to prop up you power brick, preventing overheating.
- thebza451, on 02/18/2008, -6/+29BREAKING : All HD-DVD Players Will Stop Working Tomorrow!!!
(well that's what pplz with a blu-ray hard-on make it sound like) - CamperBob, on 02/18/2008, -3/+24That's because it's sold at, or near, a loss. Consoles make most of their money from license fees paid by game publishers, so they don't have to bring in a large profit up front.
- SgtQuackers, on 02/18/2008, -5/+24Why? They took a risk and bought a format. Really the only thing that hurts them is that they will have to buy a new player but since the first player is an HD DVD player we didn't pay very much for it so its not a big loss. You can still watch the movies you bought its not like they magically stop working. I bought HD DVD and even though I'm a little mad that HD DVD lost I'm not to worried about it. I only payed $170 for the player so its not a big hit. Plus when HD DVDs go on clearance I will buy a bunch for real cheap. Then eventually when Blu-Ray is finished(profile 2.0) and cheap(bellow $200) i might buy one. I feel sorry for the early adopters of Blu-Ray who payed $500 - $1000 for a player that they will have to replace if they want to use all the features of new Blu-Ray discs and in some cases don't even play the new discs.
- Entheoddity, on 02/18/2008, -9/+27Yep, you cant out-bribe Sony!.
- SgtQuackers, on 02/18/2008, -3/+21Thats not true there are Blu-Ray player sub $300 right now go check Amazon. The cheapest PS3 is only $400. That was true for a while because Sony wouldn't let players come out for cheaper than the PS3 but they gave up on the stupid idea.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -6/+23I agree, rip HD-DVDs to disk and don't worry about the disc format.
;)
PS: That bit about having to buy new players is pure FUD. All BD movies will play in both new and old players. They're just adding more features that you have to have a newer player to take advantage of. - airwalkery2k, on 02/18/2008, -5/+22I plan to snatch up all of the cheap "obsolete" movies I can and a cheap player.
It may be obsolete, but it will likely be a steal to grab some HD movies on the cheap. - TheWorm, on 02/18/2008, -0/+16Seriously, that thing is bigger than a Wii.
- hansonc, on 02/18/2008, -1/+15bugmenot.com
- hughesj919, on 02/18/2008, -19/+32now i'll at least be guaranteed to have good movies for my PS3...wish i could say the same about games
- candafilm, on 02/18/2008, -1/+14Have a top 10 list of favorite Animal Planet hosts do you?
- BobsYourUncle, on 02/18/2008, -8/+20Jokes about death are always funny. Some people are just weak.
- ibeetle, on 02/18/2008, -1/+13Now we know what that network port is for on the back of all HD DVD players. So Toshiba can send out the shut down signal.
- Darrelc, on 02/18/2008, -5/+17But Satan, I am Steve Irwin!
- theuber1337, on 02/18/2008, -2/+14It was kind of a no brainer once the PS3 was announced to have Blu-Ray. I figured it would be more widely adopted at that point. Even though I would rather have seen HD-DVD win, if only for the name.
- EtherGnat, on 02/18/2008, -2/+14If you factor in the cost of the Xbox I don't think that was ever true.
- superkendall, on 02/18/2008, -2/+14Current Blu-Ray players will play any Blu-Ray released in the future - you just might not be able to access the online movie themed web-store from within your player. What a huge loss.
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -6/+18no lot of people get fooled and tricked into buying this *****, ive worked at bestbuy so i know what its all about.
- elliotys, on 02/18/2008, -12/+24U didn't know *****.
- smurf22, on 02/18/2008, -4/+15Its not crawl out from under a rock once in a while. You can get one for 250 if you know where to look. *cough* amazon*cough*
- daybreak, on 02/18/2008, -0/+11My Laserdisc player still works just fine!
- Ndiggnation, on 02/18/2008, -3/+14Get back to me when it won't take me 2-3 days to download a ~20-50GB Blu-Ray or HD-DVD..this isn't South Korea or Japan.
- deaftly, on 02/18/2008, -3/+14its not like the movies will magically stop working
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -1/+12You could always buy a dirt cheap HD DVD burner, and a ton of recordable HD DVD discs, and then just download blu ray rips and burn them on HD DVD discs. Sound good?
- DeathJux, on 02/18/2008, -3/+14Perhaps the word "expected" rather than "official" should have been some sort of indication?
- joevill, on 02/18/2008, -3/+14I'm glad this format war is over.
- Klisk, on 02/18/2008, -14/+24I don't think anyone really realizes that regular DVD is the true winner here, especially when it looks amazing played through an HD setup... Close enough that buying Bluray/HD-DVD isn't even worth the cash to 95% of consumers. The only people looking to upgrade are the people that like to make believe they can tell a difference when in fact they cannot. They just believe it hard.
I'll wait out for a 'true' upgrade, thanks. - SA007, on 02/18/2008, -3/+13Totally agree with you.DVDS are still the winners!
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -7/+17thats how mariah carey got her start you know.. she was doing some executive or president of sony music. would she have made it in the music industry otherwise? i surely dont think so.
blu-ray is the untalented, ugly and less appealing mariah carey of the high def market. - inactive, on 02/18/2008, -5/+15No i said they get fooled, they use a lot of salesman crap on people to get people to buy *****, ive done it and ive made people buy useless ass crap.
- MeanYogurt, on 02/18/2008, -3/+13What? The difference between upscaled dvd and hd dvd's are a night and day difference. The only regular dvd's that I've seen upscale well to hd have been pixar animated movies.
