They help shafted customers get what they deserve here in the USA.

On a note related to the article, I concur with their assessment. I had a 2.4Ghz Toshiba last for 366 days, and then its soldered-in 512MB of RAM decided to die (The laptop never left my desk, so this wasn't a wear and tear related failure). I also found out too late that there isn't a way to remove the RAM chip myself AND the Toshiba factory charges $500 just to look at the system -- they don't even guarantee a successful repair, which is tacked on TOP of the $500 fee.
I'll never buy another Toshiba product. PERIOD. - BTime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I worked at a Tech Shop last year and one of the Toshiba Laptop models were in and out for repair like a revolving door. If your Toshiba has a Blue plastic backing, be very-very-very afraid. I'd call it a lemon, but that would be slanderous to Lemons.
- Sequence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Well,
Sony = F
LG = F
Toshiba = F
Apple = D
Dell = D
F & D = Shouldn't do business with...
I'll build my next notebook with my bare hands! - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm typing from my Toshiba laptop that I'm sending in for repairs Monday, for the second time in less than 3 months.
Not surprising at all. - GerbilSoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Are you referring to the 5005? There was a class-action lawsuit settled a while ago, and 5005 owners could get $500 if they kept the laptop, or $1000 if they returned it. (A friend of mine got $1500 since he had 3 5005's, and decided to keep them.)
I happen to have a 5105 (the 5005's successor), which doesn't overheat. Instead, the video card dies, and you can't buy a replacement anywhere (not even from Toshiba)! There's no lawsuit for this model yet, though. :( - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I repaired Toshiba laptops for about a year and they are by far the worst laptops I ever used.
- thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I had a top of the line Toshiba laptop back in the day that had a 1.1ghz P3 in it. After thousands of complains came in that it was overheating and turning off after only 30 MINUTES of use, they released a "fix". This "fix" underclocked the CPU about 500mhz and made it a slow unusable piece of *****. To this day, they have never done anything for compensation or support. If I could strangle every person who works for Toshiba, I would.
- xorvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Two things to say about this, from my 3 years of selling computers locally and servicing copy machines,
1. My shop sells and services Toshiba copy machines and IMO they make great equipment, both to work on and to use.
2. Never buy a computer from these people, I ordered P4 notebook for a customer a year or so ago and it was bad out of the box. Would just shut down randomly, after going though poor tech support they agreed to overnight a new one, minimum down time, only 3 days. Didn't happen, all lies. Took 3 weeks to get a replacement, they didn't even know where it was or if it was worked on. Finally was able to get them to pay for a rental laptop so my customer could do business only to have them gyp them out of payment using "poor faxed receipt quality" and customer support people that only speak english when it suits them. F- - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Ive never owned a Toshiba, and I dont think I ever will, but I have also heard some horror stories. One person I know sent his in for some service, and after fixing the problem, Toshiba "decided" to format the hard drive for "file system inconsistencies."
- shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10why don't you google the lawsuit Toshiba settled last year for the Satellite 5005 - they had a defective design that allowed the proc to overheat, but rather than fix it, they hid a 'patch' in a bios update that slowed down the proc (like from 1.1 ghz to 500 mhz) when it got hot but still told the user it was running full speed...great company, huh?
- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Toshiba has a reputation for defective products. I had two Toshiba HDD go bad in two fairly new laptops. I knew then to stay away from anything toshiba.
- JohnQPrivate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9As if this comes as any surprise. Toshiba was the worst a few years ago when at one point, they actually SHUTDOWN their support for their laptops because they had so many defects, basically telling the customer they were S.O.L.
People started trusting them again because their laptops "look" good, but with what happened years ago I walk right by Toshiba laptops without a second glance and prevent friends from even looking at them. They should not be in charge of manufacturing ANY computer equipment. - tritium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9vhold, that is not entirely true. A few months ago, I filed a complaint with the New Jersey BBB over an issue with GameServers.com, who had made promises which were never kept. Gameservers.com responded to my complaint quickly where they had not previously, and it should also be noted that they are NOT members of the BBB. I wound up with a COMPLETE refund for all 3-months I had hosted a BF2-ranked server with their organization.
Two years ago, I filed a complaint against MGM for a faulty "Man with the Golden Gun" DVD. I had shipped them my defective DVD and had no received a replacement after more than 3-months. I filed with the BBB, and THAT following WEEK, I had a T-Shirt, a certificate for 3 free DVDs and a working version of my 007 movie via FedEx. - vspazv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Three situations with them from last year:
1. They sent a notebook back with all of the fans unplugged after replacing a systemboard.
2. They left the plastic hard drive cover off the notebook. Took 2 weeks to get another one.
3. They refused a warrantly claim on a bad hard drive because the thin metal bezel around the modem port was bent and wanted $800 to replace the system board. - Blax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm guessing it's due to the 406 unanswered complaints? I just bought an mp3 player from them, so I hope they get that tech support trained.
- slimemonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It handles all issues to companies that are headquartered in that area. So the numbers are national.
- ZeitMachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6FINALLY. I stopped buying ANYTHING Toshiba after they dropped support for the e740 less than a year after releasing it, instead telling customers to buy their new model. The only remnants of the online insurgency against them because of this issue is viewable on pc-counselor's site:
http://www.pc-counselor.com/e740.htm
scroll down to ' Call for Toshiba to Support Their Customers ' to read the whole thing. bastards. - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Looks good for HD DVD
- seti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My experience with Toshiba Laptops has been great so far, for the last 8 years I have had 3 Satellites and now a Tecra without any problem, but I do not have any experience with any other Toshiba electronics. I have never considered Toshiba for something else than laptop. I do remember a Toshiba TV set with a very basic menu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've found that too. They greatly outnumber othe brands and model numbers regarding the hardware going bad.
Toshy's online support is crap too. A client of mine wanted his toshy reformatted and XP installed without the toshy crap, all went well but there was NO way to get the sound working, even with the drivers from the Toshiba website.
Total lemons of computers, and pretty expensive ones as well when you compare them with the same spec notebooks from acer etc. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Toshiba is the only company whose products are consistently worse than Apple or Sony. At least Apple has the customer service to mitigate their manufacturing inability, and Sony...looks good.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7One thing people commonly mistake is they think the BBB is somehow a government agency that protects customers in general. The BBB is a private entity that businesses must join. Don't bother threatening to contact the BBB until you find out whether or not the business belongs to the BBB.
Businesses see the BBB as a marketting tool to inspire consumer confidence. - jay7890, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In 1995 I purchased a 486DX Toshiba Laptop. I experienced the revolving door of Los Angeles area Toshiba Support Center. After going more than 3 times, the intermittent problem was still not fixed. Soon after my last visit, it became completely dead. I just gave up because of the extreme hassle of bringing it in and getting no results. Consequently, I had to make do with other people's computers in the dorms through some of my college years. More than $2K down the tubes. Never again...

This company is not a member of the Better Business Bureau. This fact does not disparage the company in any way. - UncommonSense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Toshiba is like the Ford Motor Company of the computer industry (remember Firestone?). Customer service is deplorable, and rather than fix a problem, in many instances, they choose to sweep it under the rug.
I had sent in my Toshiba Satellite, under warranty, for a simple battery replacement. Each time I called them, I talked to a minimum of 4 different customer service reps, and each time a promised call-back was never executed. Two weeks later, I found out they had ordered the wrong part. It took them a little over one month to get the laptop back in my hands. Zero compensation, zero apology, for a nightmare of an experience. Completely unforgiveable. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4considering that the HD-DVD player is a computer itself then you shouldn't buy a HD-DVD player either.
- Kruncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The main issues I see with Toshiba laptops is the DC-in jack. After a few months it just falls off inisde the pc. No more charging it. Toshiba wants like $2000 to replace the mobo.
You can get the friggen piece for $50 at www.laptopparts.com and then pay somone to solder it in there (or DIY). - AndrewJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Take any bad comments here about Toshibia times 10 and you have Sony. Sony won't do an in warranty notebook repair no matter what.
The Toshiba business line of notebooks with three year warranty do get repaired. Like the Portege 2000 I'm using now, did.
Toshiba did screw me bad on a PDA, so I most likely won't get anything else from them. - rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You get an F!
10 seconds into it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbMtKnuYcF8&search=VW%20commercial - deaxes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Forgot to say, they also make you buy the replacement parts, even when under warrenty. This includes keyboards, AC adapters and batteries. They only thing that the warrenty seems to cover is when the motherboard needs to be completely taken out.
- WorldGroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is this true? I'm going to go look those companies up now....
This rating is very interesting, 'cuz I'm typing this from a less-than-month-old Toshiba Satellite A105-S4004 laptop. The fan is very quiet while rendering in Maya; the same scenes that would cause comparable HP/Dell/Gateways to start up their fans.
No problems with my laptop yet. - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The number one laptop I see at my work bench during a month will be Toshiba builds. This doesnt surprise me at all, also their diagnostic software is just garbage, just yesterday I ran their HD inspection software, said the HD was fine, went to Fujitsu to get the actual HD software they offer and it found a problem right off the back.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dell: D
Apple: B
Gateway: A
Sony: F
Panasonic: D
Gateway = A? Wtf? - thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah, i saw that, unfortunately I sold the laptop on ebay before the lawsuit was settled.
those bastards D: - rightside166, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Toshiba did more to help me switch to a Mac than Apple's marketing dept. could have ever done.
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I'm pretty happy with my Satellite, and my previous Satellite. After a year, it...
1) hasn't exploded
2) doesn't moo
3) doesn't overheat
4) hasn't BSOD'd
5) still runs great. - jakeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Add me to the list of disgruntled Toshiba customers. My $5000+ worth of Satellite Pro 6100 laptops (2 of them) was the last toshiba product I'll ever (knowingly) purchase.
Absolute pieces of *****. Worst computers ever. Gaaaaaah, oh, the horrible memories this thread brings back.
Damn you, Toshiba. Damn you to hell. - deaxes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I totally agree.. my college (yes, I'm in college) sells toshibas as one of their "packages" and is a repair shop. Until last semester (spring 06), they only sold toshibas. I was extremely happy that I picked my own laptop (a Thinkpad T42) instead of their crappy toshibas after a couple of friends from highschool, who went to that college complained that it overheated and would get unstable because of heat. I blame how they packed in too much power without adequate cooling. Thank god they weened off of toshbias and now onto Thinkpads. (a better choice IMHO)
- vvelox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've had my Tecra M3 for several months now and have been happy with it dual booting it between windows on freebsd.
Not tried their customer support or any thing, but one thing I find annoying is to get service docs and the like you have to sign up for some freaking tech program. - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 They haven't improved much over the years have they!
- Zoglog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Personally both Toshiba products i've owned have been fine (notebook and old CRT TV). But I have heard tons of people complain about the customer service being horrible. Toshiba better get thier act together ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Newegg For the Win!
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, I'm surprised at all the problems Toshibas have. I've had a Toshiba laptop for almost three years now, and the only problem I had that I didn't cause myself was a broken hinge, just recently, due to my heavy use.
My grandmother and three of my cousins have Toshiba laptops, and they've never had any trouble with them.
Several of my friends have Toshiba laptops as well, and have never had problems with them.
On the other hand, I had a friend go through several HPs. I had another who's sent a Dell in at least five times in two years.
Maybe I've just gotten lucky, but it's one heck of a lucky streak.
Oh, and their support is one of the best I've used. - jbreckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://ilovetohatetoshiba.blogspot.com
I made a blog to chronicle my arguments with them. They sold me a crappy TV. They are taking forever.
Never buy from Toshiba. - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those ***** got what they deserved. I am an unfortunate enough to own a Toshiba A70. Not only does it have static electicity problems, but it also overheats. Went out of warranty right as the problems began occuring.
***** Toshiba. I will never touch another product that uses any of their god forsaken components. - CableGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interestingly enough, Toshiba spent a lot of $$ a few years ago to buy a PDM solution from a company called Matrix-One, which was supposed to help them track their products and the problems that they could have with the specific parts.
Looks like it really helped them fix their problems. - scarper86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A couple of years ago PCMag's customer satisfaction rated Toshiba pretty high along with IBM and Apple. I bought a Toshiba laptop because of that and used it hard. The drive failed a couple of months ago, but I definitely got my money's worth out of that computer. It's still going strong with a replacement drive and my new laptop is also a Toshiba. Can't say anything about their customer service though since I haven't had to use it.
- scarper86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very interesting about those other company's ratings because I've seen favorable ratings for Toshiba in customer satisfaction also. I have to agree with WorldGroove. My new Toshiba laptop runs extremely cool.
- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My brothers Satellite A70 was overheating to the point where once you turn it on after about 5 minutes it overheats and turns off. I ended up blowing the fan out with some compressed air, yet the fan is still running continuesly and is very loud.
- Clark3934, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gateway got an A. :)
