µTorrent Web Interface Goes Public
slyck.com — Control your µTorrent client from infinity and beyond.
- 1440 diggs
- digg it
- muzy, on 10/12/2007, -44/+4awsome
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Awesome indeed, now I know what those chest buttons on Buzz Lightyear are for!
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34To report you to Disney for torrenting Toy Story?
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -26/+12Haha I was lamely referring to the description:
"Control your µTorrent client from infinity and beyond"
Infinity and Beyond reminds me of what Buzz Lightyear says and the green uTorrent logo with Buzz Lightyears green chest.
I wasn't referring to torrenting Toy Story.
Its okay, its lame, digg me down for it. =P - MikeDubb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23Thanks Captain Obvious.
- SicKn3sS, on 10/12/2007, -22/+2Oooh, so we can install this on other peoples computers and seed our releases? Kick ass man!
- ilovenicotine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, you can't.
- therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Download: http://download.utorrent.com/beta/webui_v0.300_beta_1.zip
- fatsobob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Unless this is a non beta version, this is a repost.
http://digg.com/software/Torrent_s_WebUI_is_now_released_for_public_beta_testing- tinkafoo, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9That one has 800 diggs, but this one is on the front page with 40. What gives?
- spyk3d, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4> That one has 800 diggs, but this one is on the front page with 40. What gives?
Why is it that almost every Digg front page story these days has someone asking "Why is this on the front page?"
Hands up who really cares. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? - EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I really care. I would rather see something original, than something twice
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I'm sick of people complaining about stories getting on the front page. If you don't want to read it, don't click the link. It's that simple and why waste time commenting about it being a dupe or useless, just bury it or skip it.
Back on topic, I suppose it's a neat idea but I doubt I'll ever use it. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I just got to the site and I was happy as could be to see that uTorrent finally had this feature. I really don't care about reposts or how upset you are that a 1.5" spot on a website you frequent had the same information as it did earlier today.
- whappo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1At least i caught it this time around!
- lyeshwanth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1yaaa this is a bit ok ....
- redskull, on 10/12/2007, -29/+4ABC Torrent client could do this years ago.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44...and with only three times the resources!
- Dochtuir, on 10/12/2007, -22/+12Azureus too.
- AlphaToxic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54...and with only 10 times the resources!
- graigchq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24aaah, but Azureaus hoggs your system like a biatch, utorrent is clearly the lowest resource hungry torrent app out there, especially considering all the features that are thrown in.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I switched to uTorrent from ABC a year ago and the lack of a web interface has bugged me. My friends at colleges with restrictive networks can't download things so I let them use ABC to get whatever they needed. Now it has been a year in prohibition so they will be greatful to be able to use uTorrent's new feature.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Even more impressive than the low resource usage is the fact that uTorrent is contained within a single ~500K .exe file. I can't think of a single program that does more with less code-bloat.
- wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Cant you already easily do this with remote desktop or VNC? I would think a vnc setup through an ssh tunnel would be a bit more convent.
- NJank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11them nuns love their ripped vids
- AlphaToxic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13many corporate networks block that kind of traffic. Also it is much more bandwidth hungry.
- Vindstille, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you use a computer witch not have VNC installed, its very helpful to have a controllpanel accessible from the web.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3VNC gives someone complete control of a PC's operating system, this lets them just control the torrent software. Also Vindstille, you can use VNC through a web interface using a little something called java.
- bluenova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Easyer and quicker just to ssh into the machine you need access to. You can do other things at the same time as well.
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Agreed, that's how I've always done it from work.
- eyko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dude, utorrent is a windows application for the average user.
- Silv3Ro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What you suggested won't work out too well, because as soon as you close the ssh connection the bittorrent-curses client will be killed. To keep it active, you have to use something like GNU Screen: http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/ .
GNU Screen lets you create several virtual consoles using only one ssh connection, and you can disconnect at any time, leaving all the virtual consoles active. I do this over WiFi, from my laptop, connecting to my server from my laptop. Reguardless, my internet connection is NATted, so I won't be able to do either this or use the Web Interface from outside.
This method, of course, is for Linux users. The Web Interface is cool for Windows users that don't feel like using Remote Desktop (that uses up more bandwidth, though...).
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Check before posting dupes, *****
- dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6grr, Alpha-Toxic submitted that like 2 days ago..
buried(dupe).. - Beamish, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1And the more of us who bury it as a dupe the sooner it will be banished back into the stack where it belongs.
buried(dupe) - rmmcclay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Posting a dupe doesn't make one an *****.
But aside from that off-topic comment, I love utorrent; don't need the webclient though, VNC has got it covered.
- dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6grr, Alpha-Toxic submitted that like 2 days ago..
- omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been waiting for something like this for utorrent... Now the only question I have left is how does Peer Guardian compare to the SafePeer plugin for Azureus? My first impression is that PG is safer, but I'm not totally sure. I'm always hesitant to switch torrent clients, since there's always so much ***** to customize.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't be sure, but I imagine that Peer Guardian and SafePeer probably use the same publicly-available blacklists, so the "safety" should be roughly the same.
- SlyckTom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The article originally said
"For example, assume µTorrent user "A" is on vacation in the Caribbean, and is suddenly overwhelmed with the inexplicable urge to download the latest Red Hat release"
That had to be changed to read Knoppix after someone at Red Hat complained. Funny how nobody noticed- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Why would he want to download it on his holiday? Its not like he can use it until he gets home anyway. They even stated he had a high speed connection, so it wouldn't take long to download when he got back.
Oh and not to mention that by the time he gets home that version would probably not be the latest version anyway - Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@vibez
because downloading Knoppix makes the program sound more legit than saying... Guy on vacation wants to download *insert new movie that was just released on BT* but hotel connection sucks. This way he can download *insert new movie that was just released on BT* and watch it when he gets home.
- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Why would he want to download it on his holiday? Its not like he can use it until he gets home anyway. They even stated he had a high speed connection, so it wouldn't take long to download when he got back.
- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Why are all the SSH posts getting dugg down? Some sort of remote desktop access gives you much greater control to all your programs rather than just limiting to one specific application.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, it *is* the more flexible choice with several advantages. However, this also has its clear uses, only requiring HTTP access. Both methods have their uses, and for that reason I don't really feel any of them should be dugg down.
- zouden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know what the author is talking about here:
"July 22's news regarding µTorrent's new IRC channel"
Is this some new feature of uTorrent that I've missed, or is it just an IRC channel to chat about uTorrent?- mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a channel that the dev of uTorrent runs. If you ever need anything, hop in there and he can provide help. There are a bucnh of other people who know their way around uTorrent too, if he's not available.
- eryx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could do this with remote access before µTorrent came up with this. Still I can't wait to try it. I wish they would come up with a feature that would let you pause all your pieces except the one file that has one piece left. So many times I just want that one piece so I pause each file of the torrent individually until it come in then I resume everything again.
- digix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't see what the big deal is here... I've been using torretflux (http://torrentflux.com/) on my box at home for over a year and it works great; integrates fully with my website too.
- eryx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you have an extra bracket on your URL, digix
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dare say, this is my favourite application ever. µTorrent just keeps getting better and better.
- jwagman1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+02 words for you: REMOTE DESKTOP
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Alot easier to use than remote desktop, and I'm sure more reliable. If you use Window's built-in remote access, you can't even access most web pages through the connection, let alone get to a point where you can download a file.
A very good addition - vibez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is the only downside, flash based sites don't work well with remote desktop
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Alot easier to use than remote desktop, and I'm sure more reliable. If you use Window's built-in remote access, you can't even access most web pages through the connection, let alone get to a point where you can download a file.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The interface looks slick, and when running the WebUI, only uses 1.5mb RAM, very nice. Works for me. Good work guys. Dugg.
- JoyrexJ9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is really nice, the GUI is far beyond what I was expecting - it's very slick like a "web-ised" version of the full app GUI.
- jaxxstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been doing this with shareza for years. Literally, years!
However, uTorrent is a far better client, so gets the digg because it now means I can switch! - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some places (like my college) block VNC and setting up VPN connections. The web interface in question here is a great way around this.
- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But they let you on torrent sites?
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't know about sending unencrypted traffic from a bittorrent client, though a pretty open network.. Although tunneling it though SSH is far far faster than shoving VNC though it (Since VNC is slow, espically when downloading stuff, which is kind obvious if your trying to monitor your downloads remotely..)
- Ben - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"But they let you on torrent sites?"
Oddly enough, yes. I mentioned Bit Torrent to one of their IT people (I also work at this college in a different department) in conversation and he had never heard of it, instead singing the praises of Limewire.
If their IT department are all like this guy, they don't even know what a torrent is, never mind blocking torrent sites.
- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But they let you on torrent sites?
- SlyckLover, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2More non news from slyck, makes a change from trivia about Canada, but just a badly written dupe. They even altered the bit about d/l red hat because they were careless. Crap article: Buried
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can't... bury... enough...
- Caliente, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is sweet. being the kind of person who's too lazy to setup a torrent on the main server computer in my house, I can see this being infinitely useful!
- tinhed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They still kept the download size to a bare minimum. In a world of Bloatware, utorrent comes a whiff of fresh air. the new webUI is grt.
- darkseer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For the love of god.
nohup /usr/bin/bittorrent-console my.torrent &
I'm pretty sure there is an equivilent for windows.
