Top Five Reasons Why I Want Digg for Girls
heartlessdoll.com — Anytime something gets made specifically "for girls," it can feel like a bad idea. Covered in pink and sparkles and adorable ponies, most girlie merchandise would make the smart women of Heartless Doll cringe. Okay, maybe not the pony part, 'cause they're just great. Anyways, I'm prepared to make a pro-girl exception when it comes to Digg...
- 659 diggs
- digg it
- sdmahesh06, on 10/14/2008, -44/+9First come first serve...nobody can dugg for girls in these days.........................................................
- granolajoe, on 10/14/2008, -1/+48...what?
- jukka4life, on 10/15/2008, -0/+0Wufnyeee!!!
- aDJsavedmylife, on 10/15/2008, -1/+21and again in English?
- jemka, on 10/15/2008, -24/+7sdmahesh06,
Awesome. I like your style, but more importantly, you execution. Well done......................................
As far as a digg.com for girls. This is the age old argument manifesting once again. Listen (girls) as long as you spread your legs and willingly allow men to penetrate your most holy of holes, we (men) are going to look down upon you. Yes, get over it, there is a double standard. A girl that gets f'd a lot is a whore. A guy that f's a lot is the man. I didn't make the rules, but I sure live by them.- petebot, on 10/15/2008, -3/+4So many reasons to digg you down...
- jemka, on 10/15/2008, -2/+2/Sarcasm
- elementop, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1...and for reason number six, read the above post...sigh.
- phauna, on 10/15/2008, -3/+14I'd really like a 'digg minus American topics'. I mean most of the front page is a repeating montage of american elections, american sports, american economics etc. I'd really like more topics from anywhere but america. Anywhere at all.
- Kerrigore, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Did the results of the Canadian election even hit the front page?
- maybemable, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2i was thinking the same thing recently.
out of interest i recently searched for stories about the scandal surrounding our last taoseach's (pm's) resignation and it amounted to about 4 stories totalling about 50 diggs.
it's my own fault i don't subscribe to rss from my national newspapers but fact is i know more about the american presidential election than anything going on here. it's just so damn addictive.
- coldkill3r, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1?
- granolajoe, on 10/14/2008, -1/+48...what?
- milocat, on 10/14/2008, -7/+99well, females are not a majority on digg, what was your expectation?
- jzuska, on 10/15/2008, -17/+81I want a black digg!
I want a Jew Digg!
I want a ***** Porn Digg!
Shut up. You have regular digg. Use the filters.- aenima987, on 10/15/2008, -3/+1There's no porn on Digg anyway though.
- schnitzelnoodle, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4aenima987 doesn't know about digg's porn mode...........
*giggle* - tsbardella, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1That is called Reddit
- sardiax, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2there was a porn digg, open submission of free galleries and movies promoted by 'wanks' instead of diggs, atleast.
wish i could think of the name of it, but i doubt it's still running.
- thcobbs, on 10/15/2008, -2/+7Fingercuffs??
- TheShad0w, on 10/15/2008, -1/+26I'd have to agree. There is no reason to segregate out different social topics off of digg. You want to see more female oriented stuff? Get more women to use Digg. I've been a proponent and even mentioned that having more female diggers would introduce an interesting change to content. I mean you're not the only one bored of seeing the same things over and over again. I haven't seen a truly interesting submission in a while.
- AnthonyFTMFW, on 10/15/2008, -0/+24. Girls should have the media on its knees.
Ummm.......TV??????????? - schnitzelnoodle, on 10/15/2008, -0/+0Haven't seen an interesting submission in a while? Maybe you're just jaded.
- teebird, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Well put. If everyone toddles off to their own little segregated Digg, then we have a bunch of sites, each in its own rut. It's the mixture of topics and outlooks that keeps a site like this one interesting.
If "girls" want to see more items of interest to them on Digg, they need to step up and participate.
- AnthonyFTMFW, on 10/15/2008, -0/+24. Girls should have the media on its knees.
- NRay7882, on 10/15/2008, -13/+6I suppose you would like a Digg-Kitchen to make our Digg-dinners in too?
- DforSpiD, on 10/15/2008, -1/+11that could have been executed so much better...
- GassyTurd, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Shorten her digg-chain.
- ElbertF, on 10/15/2008, -0/+28I'd love a sparkly Digg covered in pink ponies and unicorns.
- cffury13, on 10/15/2008, -1/+2http://whateverlife.com
- skav, on 10/15/2008, -0/+6My eyes! The goggles do nothing!
- elementop, on 10/15/2008, -1/+1CSS?
- fantasyflamz, on 10/15/2008, -9/+20I know I'm goign to get dugg down, but maybe the reason why there aren't as many girls on digg is because of the sexist comments like "make me a sandwich", "women belong in the kitchen", etc... almost everything said about females on digg is degrading and putting them down, saying they don't belong here. Grow up.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/15/2008, -4/+16Those are jokes........you know what those are, right?
If you can't take a joke and recognize them, or hell even recognize when users are simply morons, i don't know what to tell you. - bicyclethief, on 10/15/2008, -0/+11There are sexist comments but there are at least as much positive attention lavished on "girl" diggers, even if it's just to play up the Digg love-starved nerd stereotype.
- feliks2, on 10/15/2008, -3/+10Go help them make me muffins. That's what you get for saying things like this.
- keithloughnane, on 10/15/2008, -0/+9I don't care who makes the sandwich, i just want my sandwich!
- RobotBuddha, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7Every time I explicitly tell people on here that my eyes are two different colors, I get "DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU". And yet I still post here, in spite of jokes. More power to anyone who feels a need for one though. I'm only here because I got fed up with the community on another news aggregation site. Free time is for enjoyment, not frustration. I just have concerns that creating a gated community is seen as a viable answer.
- thcobbs, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1@feliks
As was said before:
"You ain't seen nothin' 'til your down on a muffin
And I'm sure I can change your ways " - Bilabrin, on 10/15/2008, -8/+1Digg is a microcosm of society. The internet is a window into what people REALLY think. If you can't handle Digg, you REALLY can't handle life.
- PReitz, on 10/15/2008, -4/+2Cry me a freakin river. Seriously. Us "libtard obamabots" haven't been driven out of digg. And we've flung back insults just as bad to the other side and they're still here. Welcome to life.
Also, as I'm sure several people will point out, the filters seem to work just fine for me. - Trekhawk, on 10/15/2008, -3/+4It's a sammich. Get it right.
- GassyTurd, on 10/15/2008, -4/+3Shut it ya tubby bitch.
- maybemable, on 10/15/2008, -1/+2nope. if i stay or leave it'll be because of the content. i love the *****-slinging contests that go on in the comments. sometimes it's boring, sometimes it's hilarious.
- lisaawesome, on 10/15/2008, -2/+9The sexism here doesn't bother me one bit. I say the same ***** all the time and I am a girl. ***** I'm probably more sexist than most men. Guess what ladies? The majority of you are dumb ***** and it is why I chose to come here. I can't stand you and your endless drama crap about who ***** who or whatever it is you idiots talk about. And I don't want to read articles about bras and tampons. I think I have both figured out at this point.
- n00854180t, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4(I couldn't resist): Welcome to the Internets, you must be new here. A "girl Digg" wouldn't alleviate this problem. It'd merely increase the amount of guys either pretending to be female because they like the love-starved nerd-stereotype attention, or would be fawning on anyone with a handle with "girl" (or variations) in it.
@lisaawesome, Your nick is appropriate. - Bronowyn, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Eh, I don't mind the comments... comes with a mainly male audience with mainly male submitters of both articles and comments. HOWEVER, I did find from this article Kirtsy.com which satisfies my girlie-ness. I don't think some of those things will fly over here, would likely get buried. I'd rather be in the kitchen myself, but I have to earn a living, and baking pies does not support my video gaming habit.
- HonoredMule, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Stupid people get mocked constantly on Digg, and we're not scaring *them* away.
If stupid people can take the heat, then girls can too.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/15/2008, -4/+16Those are jokes........you know what those are, right?
- WhiteHamster, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2*sexist comment*
- Cadicus, on 10/15/2008, -3/+2Most girls are not looking for news on the internet. digg is primarily a nerdy news site.. and most girls aren't into that.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/48048.html
"Different Purposes
Pew research shows that, compared with women, online men are more likely to check the weather, get news, get do-it-yourself information, check for sports information, get political information, get financial information, do job-related research, download software, listen to music, rate a product/person/service through an online reputation system, download music files, use a Webcam, and take a class.
Women, on the other hand, are more likely to use e-mail, get maps and directions, look for health and medical information, use Web sites to get support World Class Managed Hosting from PEER 1, Just $299. Click here. for health or personal problems, and get religious information.
Meanwhile, the Pew report shows that men are more likely than women to use the Internet as a destination for recreation. Men are more likely to gather material for their hobbies, read online for pleasure, take informal classes, participate in sports fantasy leagues, download music and videos, remix files, and listen to radio. " - rpgmaker, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1"So, now, who wants to build a Digg for girls...?"
If you want a digg for girls build it yourself. Fight for your right to "digg". Also, a digg for girls will be filled with diggers trying to meet tech girls. - anotherjack, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1I saw no "men only" sign on the way in, so I guess my expectation was that I wouldn't actually need to conform to the majority interests. The site is about sharing interests, not enforcing them. Women don't need to leave Digg to feel included and I don't think anybody wants them to. I think we just need to tinker a bit with filters and categories so that there's more variety of user experience.
- jzuska, on 10/15/2008, -17/+81I want a black digg!
- Nick217, on 10/14/2008, -17/+7sad but true.
- Nattybumpoe, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7I don't agree. Digg started off as being a tech news site. If you are going to complain about the maleness of a TECH NEWS site, then maybe digg isn't necessarily the site for you. However, you have seen women get a big influence on Digg. Look at the Huffington Post - created by a woman. Virtually every major election news story is by the Huffington Post.
- groo68, on 10/15/2008, -1/+1She wants a digg site for girls, not for women.
- Nattybumpoe, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7I don't agree. Digg started off as being a tech news site. - lolwutpear, on 10/15/2008, -0/+31Digg isn't an MMO or an AOL chat room.
- NeoNevermore, on 10/15/2008, -10/+4What's AOL? :-)
- dynelol, on 10/15/2008, -1/+38Sometimes it seems on par with an AOL chat room.

- netzdamon, on 10/15/2008, -4/+2No, AOL chat is a lot more intelligence than digg most of the time.

- llamarama7, on 10/14/2008, -11/+90Dead-on -- I say the only way to fix this is a "My Little Pony" news category.

canceling? rhymey? acutal? them deuces?
These coming from a 21 year-old who should stop playing video games while he "continues living with his parents." The phrase I'm thinking of is ""full retard retarded."
Please do yourself, and everyone else, a few favors: a) move out, b) buy a dictionary, c) don't vote, d) don't post on the Internet.
(You're very welcome. For more muckraking, please click the "Reply" link.) - mikbunn, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5Your dumb.
- maybemable, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4there is something really creepy about cygnus2112 "exposing" everything mikbunn said recently. reminds me of that video of the scientologists shouting "what are your crimes?"
- mikbunn, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4Well apparently my crimes are infrequent and sometimes intentional typos, making occasional jokey comments, enjoying video games, and living at home while I save up money to return to college. Oh, and spelling 'canceling' correctly.
- cygnus2112, on 10/15/2008, -2/+1Save up money. 21 and living with Dad. Playing video games and camping Digg. Yeah, you're a winner.

- teethandeyes, on 10/15/2008, -2/+7That is really insulting to females. I don't personally know of any females who like Sarah Palin. In fact, the one or two unfortunate souls I have encountered who do like Palin are stupid males.
Your sarcasm (I hope it is), kind of missed the mark.- mikbunn, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4Fortunately for me, Digg is heavily populated with men who get sarcasm. Sorry if you're offended, but know that my use of silly stereotypes is purely for humorous effect.

- rhapsodisiac, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2No, we don't need articles like that. I come here to avoid all that crap. I want INTERESTING stuff, not "girl stuff," which tends toward inanity and vapidity. Of course, the "boy stuff" category does the same - which is why I think it's best to think in terms of "interesting people-stuff," vs "boring people-stuff."
- cygnus2112, on 10/15/2008, -31/+6With the rabid pro-Obama whinefest, I thought Digg was already a site for girls.
- dezweber, on 10/14/2008, -7/+77Separate but equal? I don't like that idea and I could care less if an article about comfortable bras hits the front page. Not that I don't need comfy boulder holders, but that sort of information is neither news or entertainment.

Yes. Yes, they do. My roommate's girlfriend is currently obsessed with Freelancer. My last GF was obsessed with Final Fantasy ...what was the one with that asinine 'blitzball' thing? (ugh). I once, as a medic in Team Fortress Classic, went head to head with an opposing medic - who was a chick. Great fun was had curing each other's diseases.
...Okay, that last bit sounded wrong. :) - WhiteHamster, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3... i think i'll leave that one alone
- thewordisberry, on 10/15/2008, -0/+8Kirtsy is picking up momentum. From what I have seen most of the members are both blog and Twitter savvy - very active in the social media community, lots of them bloggers, and generally pretty awesome people. Er, chicks. ;)

- fantasyflamz, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4I took a look at that site and I was slightly dissapointed. It looks nice and some of the articles are interesting, but I wish it was somewhere between that site and digg b/c I always like the tech/video game sites on digg.
- almayng, on 10/15/2008, -2/+2Just went there... the most annoying ***** i've ever seen. I like digg just the way it is.

- solesoul, on 10/15/2008, -1/+6You go grrrrrrl.
- trogdor282, on 10/15/2008, -0/+38Article is a little sexist. "New maskless lithography trick may keep Moore's Law on track." -how is that "guy stuff"? Is engineering a "man's game" and girls should keep to the kitchen?
- abbathdoom, on 10/15/2008, -1/+15Yup, this is the lame thing about gender equality. Women demand media content that relates to them rather than men, but you can't do that unless you reinforce gender stereotypes.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5And the gender stereotypes are usually really dumb. Men, have to talk about the reality of conspiracies. Women, homeopathy is real and science is icky! The latter is particularly baffling given the predominance of women in most fields of biology.
- walshgopher, on 10/15/2008, -1/+8 This article really pisses me off. I'm a chick and I'm in electrical engineering at Mohawk and I might take fluid mechanics when I'm finished because I find that sort of thing terribly interesting.
I don't pretend to like video games or gadgets because I actually do but I do hate girls who show up at LAN parties and the like pretending to be "in to" the games but really they're just there to play off of the socially underdeveloped guys.
I also hate it when girls talk about hating sparkles and pink and then have a picture of a my little pony on the same page.
Seriously. Back the ***** off. If you ruin this for me like you ruined LANs or tried to ruin my classes I will beat you down. - XFDRaven, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2I wish you were in my engineering school. You'd have made an awesome beer buddy for our friday night parties.

I'm also pretty sure hot pictures of Daniel Radcliffe (equus) have made it as well.

- ruffdogg, on 10/15/2008, -2/+5i guess you can have a girly network of friends right here on digg, wat comes up on your friend's activity list is more important than the front page in my opinion
- xtinamo, on 10/15/2008, -4/+92I have to disagree for a few reasons. As a female, I find that digg provides an adequate amount of articles that appeal to females with an interest in tech, science and current events. I personally am not that into the whole "iphone fanboy" craze nor do I "shoot my load" so to speak over the newest web browser or operating system; but that's okay because there is plenty of information that I wouldn't have found without digg.
I think if there were such a site like digg for girls(i.e. kirtsy.com) it would be a bunch of cosmo-esque and ultra-feminist articles that frankly, are boring and only help to dilute our intelligence. I also can't imagine that comments would be as insightful and funny, or that the "internet culture" would be as present. I'm down for supporting female submissions, but the content has to be entertaining and it would be retarded to digg them for the sake of "supporting other women" (just like females shouldn't vote for Palin only because she's a woman). I think the best we can hope for in terms of female presence on digg, is that more girls realize we should be expanding our minds instead of focusing on superficial *****.- blu3bird, on 10/15/2008, -1/+15I Agree, but i LOLed at you saying "shoot my load"
- anstice85, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5Agreed, but there's certain things that affect us that I'm sure guys don't give a ***** about, in the same way that whenever some story about some bitch being hot is dugg up (ten hottest whoevers, for one) I pass it by. There would be some content that would appeal to me in a version of Digg for girls, but since less girls are in the IT industry, most of the content probably wouldn't.
- Frodoholic, on 10/15/2008, -5/+4I disagree that cosmo-esq articles dilute our intelligence. Aside from the makeup stuff in Cosmo, they present a lot of articles on women's safety and sexual health that are valuable to the average 20-something. Although their "500 ways to please your man" is over done and repetitive, there is a lot of value in some of the other articles, including just humor anecdotes in the submitted stories that girls can relate to.
More in response to the article, it's kinda ridiculous to say that Digg doesn't also appeal to women. When stuff is interesting, funny or informative, it knows no gender.- Cadicus, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2I do not believe anything in Cosmo is relevant or important. It is a magazine that perpetuates the superficiality of society. It has no Merit. Next you're going to try to convince me (as Tyra Banks claims) that "America's Next Top Model" is an important, character building show.
- Frodoholic, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Slippery slope argument much? I don't watch America's Next Top Model, and it's rather insulting for you to insinuate it.
You don't find the articles about women who have over come amazing articles, like rape, cancer and losing their husbands on 9/11 relevant? Or the ways to best prevent skin cancer from too much expose to the sun? There are a lot of myths about sexual health, and Cosmo devotes part of their magazine each month to debunking these myths and get the truth out there to their readers.
Like I said in my original post, Cosmo does contain a lot of things I skip over, but when I do read it, I enjoy reading the informative and inspirational articles it provides. It's rather ridiculous to say it provides nothing of merit, when many people have gotten valuable information from it.
- Twisted871, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4I wish I could Digg you up twice.
- mitliebejen, on 10/15/2008, -1/+8Well said.
- Haysoos, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Good post. The author of the article said that she didn't think the articles on maskless lithography or compressed air cars were interesting to women, which is funny because most sexist men (who think women belong in the kitchen) would agree. They would say something about how it's "man stuff" and over womens heads. As a guy, I don't agree, I love to see women breaking down barriers of what is "gender specific". I don't think something is gender specific unless it directly relates to the gender, such as articles on tampon technology, or "enhancement pills" for men. I don't see those things.
As for the comment about james bond, NBA, and howard stern not being interesting to women, like I said, this is the same view as the "good old boys" who think women are only good for cleaning and child rearing. My mom watches NBA and NFL. My girlfriend listens to howard stern and like james bond movies. Its just so DUMB. - mochaman, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1You made a porn reference as it relates to techno lust, how dare you!
- AndrAIa, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3I completely agree with you. Also, the idea of a "digg for girls" is incredibly sexist.
All we need is more articles about "100 sex tips that will drive him wild". Seriously, I think they run a variation of that article in every issue of Cosmo. (My friends would buy every bloody issue too.) It's a big book of how to be a consumer whore and I would never let my daughter read it.. not because of the sexual content but, because of the horrible and unrealistic lifestyle they try to sell.
