- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19so an average of only 10,000 per blog per year? That's lower than minimum wage. But on the upside if you are in that top 1%, that made 20% of the revenue or $100 million over 500 blogs, then you are making $200,000 per year, which puts your firmly in the upper middle class. Not bad. Unless of course there is more than 1 employee, then you are back to being poor again.
- rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Misleading. As the article itself notes (see the graph at the bottom), 15% of those 50k blogs, or only 7,500 blogs, accounted for 90% of that income, 10% or 5,000 accounting for 80%. The headline, and the article, make it seem as if many more people are making money at this than really are. A very few blogs are profitable, and a tiny minority actually make serious money.
Blog for love, not for money. - uberneoconcert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8blogging is not a full time job. a blogger's 30k+ salary with a 10 grand buffer for re-posting links, pictures, and ideas is not something to scoff at.
- joshua5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm willing to bet a big portion of them wind up on Digg's front page as blog spam
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6They just dont tell you that 20k of them are owned by the same blog spam person.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No. They're both morons.
I had to put down the real Dawkin's book shortly into it. It's just all the same ***** I've already come up with on my own... drawn out over hundreds of pages. - froinlaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://valleywag.com/tech/blogging-for-dollars/chitikas-bogus-half+billion+dollar-blog-business-285293.php
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Bloody long tail.
- darnit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+320K is middle class?
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3What the...? Did you just create that ID to make comments like that. I find it hilarious because I thought that died out with the 90s.
- jkizzle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2say the blog has 4 employees...
50k a year isnt bad money, especially when you consider the time investment of publishing a blog... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yeah, especially since they are getting paid to do what most of us do for free (or less, if we pay our own hosting costs)
- 0ceanic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2eh, if my every day thoughts were interesting enough to make me money, i would do it too. you hear some news and you think about it. get a speech to text program and talk to yourself. seems like an easy 10k if you have the "interesting" part.
dont hate the real bloggers, hate the spam.
that said im pretty certain ive never read a blog on the internet. - generalmartok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Mine is on the bottom part of the list: http://generalmartok.blogspot.net/
- ByronT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not really him.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Although it would be important to compare these figures (including number of hours worked) to the salaries of journalists at various levels of the field. Writers, despite being an essential part of much of the information we receive, rarely make all that much money.
Well I found this real quick: http://www.princetonreview.com/cte/profiles/facts.asp?careerID=85
Average starting salary for a journalist is 28k, after 5 years 44k and after 10-15 years around 70k PLUS the average hours worked is 55/wk. Do you think most bloggers are spending 55 hours/week on their blogs? Obviously a lot more information is needed to make any real conclusions, but interesting nonetheless - rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You must really be frightened by the 10% or so of the US who have 0% representation in government and are the most mitrusted segment of American society. One can only wonder why your fear is so pronounced that you feel the need to spam every digg discussion with your nonsense. One can almost smell your fear over the Internet, as well as taste the pure hatred that fear feeds. I feel truly sorry for you.
- jhourcle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Still misleading -- given the breakdowns (top 1% = 20% income; top 5% = 50% income), we can break down the data further:
top 1% = 20% of the profit = $100mil / 0.5 k = $200k/yr each;
next 4% = 30% of the profit = $150mil / 2k = $75k/yr each;
next 5% = 30% of the profit = $150mil / 2.5k = $60k/yr each;
next 5% = 10% of the profit = $50mil / 2.5k = $20k/yr each;
next 85% = 10% of the profit = $50mil / 42.5k = ~$1.2k/yr each
Of course, that's all gross. Then you have to subtract the hosting costs. And let's not forget that the larger operations often have multiple employees ... so even pulling $200k/yr might not be much when split 4 ways and covering your costs. - b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well, here's somewhere to start: http://violentacres.com/ :)
she's relatively interesting, and updates frequently.
Anyone else have any good blog reccomendations? - ramong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can make money blogging, lots of it, however the guys that are raking in most of the cash have been doing it for years and are FULL time bloggers, so if you plan on starting don't expect to hit pay dirt anytime soon
- flaminio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I imagine it's fun many one peanut at a time. I'll just keep imagining.
- scatteredbomb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The way most other websites online make money, ads.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's a very comfortable middle class lifestyle if you consider that he's living with rent, utilities, homecooked meals, laundry service, cleaning service, etc for free. All that money those suckers who live "on their own" lose to "the man" instead goes right towards his personal hobbies (pictures of one provided in the link below).
http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/how-not-to-mod-a-car-del-sol-a-wing-edition - jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that's below the poverty line, that's not middle class.
- gr3yn3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no. ***** your blogpsam.
- davewashere, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Welcome to the Internet
- funkinthetrunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The methodology of this "study" is completely flawed and ridiculous, they arrived at the numbers by using customer data and Technorati rankings, none of which can accurately be quantified into a solid estimate. Organic had it right when they put it close to $50M based on the spending habits of the largest agencies.
- merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When you're running a top-500 blog, hosting is gonna eat into your $200,000/yr pretty seriously. Remember, that's *revenue*, not profit.
- j1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know what hosting you're talking about, but a dedicated server that can handle a few hundred thousand daily visitors isn't going to cost more than a few hundred dollars a month.
- GetShorty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Where's your money making blog?
- andysep47, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1How do you make money of a blog anyway? selling links?

- 3lijah, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Let's get me in that list! http://www.raidandpillage.com
- novask, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1How the ***** is someone in the upper middle class, who's making 10x more then me a year and I'm considered middle class?
- FreDre, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0Too bad for you, because blogs are easy money (if you know how to handle them)
- thomasb227, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1Richard Dawkins is a fag...but the guy (RichardDawkins) making fun of him is a genius.
